Many of today's comics are filled with shock value and are full of gore. Look at most Vertigo titles, Night of the Living Dead comics, Marvel Zombies, and so on. Even so called mainstream titles have had plenty of violence.
However, the 1940's and 50's had their share of gruesome/shock value comics as well. Of course these original violent comics are what brought about the Comics Code Authority which ending up regulating comic books for decades.
I will attempt to find and present to you "shock" comics/stories from the 40's & 50's to read. Most of us may never have seen these stories before so sit back, kick off your shoes, turn off the lights and enjoy these delightfully twisted stories !

Today's story comes from the comic book "Underworld" #3 from the year 1948.
This is an 8 page story titled "The Widow of Death".
A truely disturbing tale.......

A couple weeks ago the Indianapolis paper had an article on Belle Guiness and her murder spree almost 100 years ago.
Guiness did much of her killing in LaPorte IN.....the town where I grew up in. When I posted this story a while back I completely forgot about her!
In the story it reads "The Farm at LaPorte Indiana".....don't know how I missed that the first time!?!
A truely grizzly story.......

#explode#Nice! Keep 'em coming. The EC Crime Suspenstories #22 cover is my favorite...you know, severed head, bloody axe, dead girl. But I haven't seen the story that goes along with it.

Wow. The ol meat cleaver to the kids head. Thats pretty brutal. The old GA horror comics dont really leave much to the imagination it appears. Its really laid out for ya. LaPorte's local brewery dedicated a beer to this mass murderer. Its called Belle Guiness Stout.
Speaking of Golden Age horror comics..... got any Worlds of Fear? I've seen some covers over the years but never read any of them. They look pretty cool.

Thanks again Habib, it's nice to see something from inside the books. I just saw this indie documentart on sex in film and in it they really destroy the myth that the 40's and 50's were this time where everyone was prude and "sweet". This reminds me of that.
I have one question, because this has motivated me to start a thread, is there anything wrong with posting the inside of comics like this? Is it copyright violation, or would it be considered "Spoiler" info?

When going through some recent purchases I made another find of the notorious "Belle Gunness" story.
This time the story was found in the comic book Crime Does Not Pay #44.
Here is this story for your viewing pleasure.......

Most think that Belle Gunness did not die in the fire that destroyed her home.....the body of the woman with Gunnesses clothes was......headless!
Lamphere was not killed by Gunness as in this story but was convicted of setting fire to the Gunness house and sent to prison for arson. As per the info in the first comic story he died after 3 years in prison.
Belle Gunness overall was reported to have murdered over 40 individuals.....her own children included.

Fascinating... so much so that I googled Belle and read the "real" wikipdedia version of her story. It appears that Belle was not nearly as attractive as depicted in the first comic story; Jack Alderman's version in the second story was probably much more accurate.
This would be a perfect Rick Geary story. He does these illustrated murder/mystery books based on real life, including Lizzie Borden, the Lindbergh baby, and several others. They're meticulously researched and illustrated in the unique Rick Geary style. They're short read and very entertaining. My mother likes mysteries, and I've purchased several autographed books for her from Rick at ComicCon. I'm going to suggest this topic to him later this year... if he isn't working on it already or maybe has already done it.

This is disgusting!
Congress ought to do something about this (this, and healthcare)!
If children keep reading this perfidious, low-class form of "literature" they're all going to grow up to be juvenille deliquents!
In fact, I hear that one popular comic book character called "the Batman" (a black-cowled vigilante who takes the law into his own hands by throwing hoodlums from rooftops) now runs around the night with an underage boy in his underwear - fulfilling some kind of latent homosexual love fantasy in young readers' venal minds! Soon we'll need to send all our sons to readjustment centers!
Isn't there some Doctor or Psychiatrist out there who will take a stand against this sequential graphic smut?

I wouldn't count on it, capt. There's too much money to be made pandering to perverts, degenerates, and people who watch reality TV. This seduction of the ignorant will continue as long as there's an audience for it, which means forever.
