It is all Marvel, with only a very few exceptions, like Wonder Woman and Justice League. Marvel made the characters feel like real people who simply had super powers. People who the average guy could relate to. Even the Silver Surfer, a cosmic super-power, was made into someone the average reader could understand.

Unlike most of the D.C. characters who were goofy and pretty lame during the Silver Age.

I clicked the wrong button. This is supposed to go under DC vs Marvel

That's the idea Stan Lee wanted to apply to the new Marvel Universe when he used new ideas and based it on "real world" problems. That's why I love Spider-man so much, unlike Superman, he seems so alien. Ditto for Wonder Woman. DC is good but not "up there" with Marvel. I do like Green Lantern and Batman because of its ideals or purpose of the characters. Make Mine Marvel! 8)

Silver Age Marvel ruled!! DC was late to the party and second best at best! I cared about Spiderman's problems and the infighting of the Fantastic Four and Iron Man's health. With DC I just tried to figure out the gimmick each issue. Except for Gardner Fox stories like the JLA or the Atomic Knights. They rocked!

The Silver Age should start with FF#1 and the earlier stuff where Green Lantern and the Flash were redone and a new Atom and the Metal Men and so on were generated should be known as the DC Tried Age! :)

I **like** it that Marvel has it's own thread now, Khumbu! It deserves it!

Reading Silver Age DC, with a few exceptions, is almost like an academic exercise for me - it borders on being a chore! Marvel is where my passion lives.

OK! I just posted to eBay the exception to my point! Challengers of the Unknown #3 from September 1958 has a 12 page Jack Kirby story where the Chall launch Rocky into space and after exposure to radiation he comes back with amnesia and the ability to cast flames with enhanced strength, his hands, grow tall, and blend in with the background.

Add a little tweaking and you have the origin story of the Fantastic Four. So I guess the Marvel Age should start with this story. And we all wondered where Stan Lee got all of his great ideas. Oh, well at least his uncle was the publisher!

I, too, like the SA Marvels much better.

Spidey, FF, DD, TOS, TTA, Avengers....ALL great reads.

Much of DC was just too Campy for my taste....with lots of "imaginary" stories and the like.

The Marvel Bullpen Bulletins were good too. I always looked forward to reading the news and gossip in them almost as much as I did the actual stories.

I found this page that has a bunch of them scanned. Check 'em out if you don't feel like digging through your boxes.

Wow! Cool reference page, Mordo! I would not have thought to search for that kind of thing. What a blast!

I was crazy about Marvel back then. I know there were a number of fanzines available, but I didn't know of them at the time so the Bullpen news and letters pages were something I loved to read in order to get my monthly dose of news and opinions.

Anyone into Daredevil.

I really enjoy Romita's Daredevil run. I think it is #11-19, I just won a #18 and look forward to reading it, 1st Gladiator.

DD #15, with the Ox, was one of my favorite stories in the Romita run. The storyline is similar to the famous FF#51, but different enough to stand on its own. Enjoy DD#18, another great issue!

I read DC.

I devoured Marvel.

Marvel made me feel like I was a part of it. With the Bullpen Bulletins, inside jokes within the stories, "No Prizes," the credits with Stan "The Man" Lee, Jack "The King" Kirby, Jazzy John Romita and such, every issue of Marvel was a personal invitation to fun.

Always thought both Marvel and DC were goofy and unrealistic. I mean people actually believe that radiation would transfer great powers to them? What is so "normal" about some normal scientists suddenly becoming a Dr. Jekyll with zero brain power? Or IM ? Right I forget how common ultra billionaires were in the 60's? Marvel/DC whatever they were both goofy and completely unrealistic right down to their social problems. I almost wish they had tried something other than teen age/young adult angst stuff because it pervaded right into the 90's

I just caught the very end of the Silver Age but I do love them.Once I really got into comics around '71-'72 I remember going to the grocery store and heading straight to the spinner rack.I would always grab the Marvels first. The next week if there were any new Marvels I got them,if not I setteled for some DC and Charlton.Of course I did get hooked on the DC giants,I thought the golden age stories were so cool and talk about value! I could read on one of those for a couple of hours

This is a shrewd observation. I enjoyed these pages for exactly the same reason. It's also worth noting that while fanzines were being published, their availability was limited to "those in the know".

Not me. If I wanted a soap opera, I could watch "Days of Our Lives". I wanted my superheroes to be noble and heroic instead of plagued with angst.
