View Full Version : Change One Letter Game (Round 2): C.G.'s Mystery Comic!

The Charlton Guy
05-21-2006, 03:47 PM
Here's Hoss's Rules (tweaked a bit by me, to allow for conversion to Corral Cash):

I'll start off the game by posting one word. The object of the game is to take the word I have posted and change just one letter in the word to create a new word.

Example: dog ----> doe

The next person would have to change one letter in the word "doe" and so on and so forth.

Rules per round:

You may not rearrange the letters.

You can play as often as you like, but at least one new person must post before you can post again.

You may NOT repeat a word that has been already used!

Proper names/places are NOT permitted!

YES, GREEK GODS ARE PROPER NOUNS!

Your word must appear in the Online Dictionary: http://dictionary.reference.com/

You may not edit or delete any posts in this thread for any reason. Make certain your answer is final before submitting.

If a duplicate answer is submitted within 2 minutes of the previous answer leeway will be granted to the 2nd poster and no penalty will be assessed.

A penalty of -0.50 in Corral Cash will be assessed for any rule violation, so be careful before posting your new word!

If you have the "last word" in a 24-hour period, you are the winner of at least $10.00 in Corral Cash. If the round is going a long time, the Jackpot will increase per page number of total posts!

If any member updates the word list every few pages, they will receive $0.50 bonus Corral Cash!

*****************************************

Here's C.G.'s Twist:

In this Round, not only will you be playing for a Corral Cash Award of $10.00 (to be raised if the Game goes 10 pages or more), but you will also be playing for C.G.'s MYSTERY COMIC!

This will be a doozy, title and issue number to be disclosed as the Game progresses.

No hints for now, but all players are encouraged to ask questions as the Game progresses. BUT! Only one question per word posted! And no questions allowed without posting a word. I reserve the right to answer each question with either a literal or an obtuse answer or not at all (is that vague enough?). If you should guess the name and issue number of C.G.'s Mystery Comic before the Change One Letter Game ends, you will receive significant extra added bonus Corral Cash. But ONLY the winner of the Change One Letter Game itself will receive C.G.'s Mystery Comic.

Get it? Got it? Good!

The Game begins with the word following this post.

And yes, I will be Moderating (but not playing) this Round.

Good Luck!

Oh Mr. C.G. there isn't a "meats" on http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=meats

Linda

We've talked about these common plurals in previous rounds.

Although dictionary.com has some great features and is the best tool for searching and verifying obscure words and game-savers for this game, there are some glitches.

The site often over-rides common words in favor of tose pesty acronyms in "acronym.com" and obscure words and sometimes even proper nouns will over-ride common (and acceptable) words.

So just because a plural word or actually, any word doesn't show up on dictionary.com doesn't mean it doesn't exist or that it won't be allowed.

As such (and Hoss made this clear in earlier rounds) the decision ultimately rests with the Moderator of the Game (that's me) not with dictionary.com

dictionary.com is indeed the main reference, particularly for obscure words, but just because a word exists there, doesn't mean that it can't be disallowed (again, by the Moderator for that Round).

Also, dictionary.com OFTEN does not include common plural usages.

So after all of that clarification and gobbledygook, yes, "Means" is a common plural and is allowed.

I hope that clears things up a bit, particularly for our newer participants.

Thanks!

ZIZZY

the state of being like a Zizz the noun meaning: 1: a buzzing or whizzing sound as in "a nasty zizz in the engine" or 2: a nap; "Arthur's taking a short zizz"

The engine is making a zizzy sound now or Arthur just awoke and still looking all zizzy!

(Take the 50p now I fear) Is the comic an ACG issue?

That's the Game Plan, but first:

CONGRATULATIONS JAELDUBYOO! (Yet again).

An excellent win (even though the Game jumped headfirst into the treacherous "Z" territory way too soon...).

PM me with your address and I will get your Mystery Comic out to you.

And yes! This Game is continuing!

Here's the stakes:

We're reverting to "20 Questions", but the questions are not limited to 20. You may only make one post at a time (there must be a reply before you post again).

If you guess the title and issue number of the Mystery Comic correctly before Jaeldubyoo receives his Mystery Comic, you will win $25.00 in Corral Cash!

If Jaeldubyoo receives the book and posts the title and issue number first, he will receive the $25.00 in Corral Cash (in addition to his $10.00 win for the C.O.L. Game).

I will be answering the lastest questions shortly.

Good luck!

No.

As for your very scholarly question regarding the staus of "zizzy". I tend to agree. But I beat my head against that wall for six months in this stupid Game and got nowhere (see past games at the Old Corral), so a certain level of frustration just goes with the territory. We all have to live with it. It's a terrible thing...

Two letter games = two separate and parallel games of Change One Letter running concurrently and without mutual interaction. It was a subtle way to say how much these game were enjoyed by me. I have NO problem with the concept of 2 letter change games (one game, each entry may change exactly two letters) but fear that we may exhaust the tota; number of possible English words of that length before creating a wining solution. (You can clearly see that on page 5 of the entries starting with st previously used in this round...)

Now if you want to talk switching to each 25th entry changes a letter AND adds a new letter so that the five letters of the first 24 entries become the six letters of the 25th and the next 24 entries and so on, I'm in!

Is the SA Dell 4c taken from cartoons?

From FC670 MGM's Mouse Musketeers 1/56 to FC1354 Calvin and the Colonel 4/62 maybe some 685 minus the unlisted numbers that probably don't exist say 650.

Subtract those with a Disney character or Santa Clause or a Western theme, the word "Time", "First", "Who", or "Mystery" in the title and the specific guesses like Alley Oop and Francis the famous talking mule and we are probably down to 300 possibles.

I don't think knowing that the comic doesn't invoke will prove useful!

Least likely is those from the Movie/TV cross-over of cartoons. Next Television then Movies being the most likely.

Just a little tip from your local Expert Ball Puller (it's Bingo night!)

The ending to this game will be similar to Bingo, in that as we get closer to the correct guess for the Mystery Comic, the timing of your post will come into play.

That is why I reminded you of the "no subsequent posts" rule.

Even if your guess/question is correct, it will be ignored if it is posted back to back by the same person. You must wait for another Corral Member to post (someone other than me) before posting your next question.

One of C.G'c personal favorites. It features some VERY dark and stark Alex Toth artwork and of course a story that you just can't go wrong with.

I love these movie adaption Dells. Someone guessed, "Atlantis, The Dark Continent" earlier. That is my all-time favorite adaption, mainly because it is the very first movie that I saw on the big screen when I was a Charlton Tyke.

Okay, I'll post.

We know it's a Four Color, it isn't....
a Disney-based book
it isn't cartoon-based
it isn't with Santa Claus
it isn't a Western theme
It isn't Francis the Talking Mule or The Twilight Zone
it doesn't have the word "Time", "First", "Who", or "Mystery" in it
it's in the Silver Age (loosely #742 to #1354)
it has a photo on the cover most likely TV/Movie based.

So here's my turn at guessing from a FC book from #742 to #1354.

Is it Four Color #1257 (CAR 54, Where Are You)?

No. It is not "Car 54, Where Are You?".

And Camper, be careful. Are you sure all of your assertions are correct?

Well, is this game meant to be detoured? Indeed it does have the word TIME posted. Thereby steering everyone in the wrong direction.

What happened there?

A better question would be, "How did you overcome the head-fake?"

I took CG's warning to mean that the lock out on Disney characters was only limited to Cartoony Disney thangs like the Mathemagic short and not to "The Swamp Fox". A photo cover was impossible for cartoons anyway.

Turned out to be a warning about mis-established guidelines.

Funny though that camper49 would add a limitation that ruled out the correct entry and "The Time of Our Lives" He had $25CD in his hands only to watch it dribble between his fingers.

No sour grapes, MG! Take your victory like a man!

Camper made the supposition that the word "Time" was out of the running.

He was wrong. Nobody ever asked me if the book had the word "Time" in the title (I triple-checked all previous posts).

I pointed out that he was wrong about one of the assertions he made. At that point, I figured that you would all go back and double-check his assertions, which would have given you a MAJOR clue.

If I had come right out and said that the word "Time" was included, it probably would have been Game over on the next post.

As for where and how and why Camper made that assertion? You'll have to ask him.

Congratulations again Marvelguy!

We'll be doing this again soon.

I think I can solve this confusion! It was all my fault! Camper49 is blameless!

Page 5 post 10 I wrote

Yes, it is a Silver Age book from Dell

this was a rewrite from a post where I had mistakenly summerized that it was NOT a Dell comic when clearly CG had pulled the ball for YES. I removed my question from that post mistakenly assuming that my question about Archie Comics was still my "one post" I didn't re-write my notes.

The question I erased was "Is the word 'TIME' in the title?" I never crossed it out of my notes. There was "The Time of our Lives" as well. Going by my own notes made it one of the last Dells that I would ever have guessed.

Page 8 post 5 I said

Subtract those with a Disney character or Santa Clause or a Western theme,

the word "Time", "First", "Who", or "Mystery" in the title and the specific

guesses like Alley Oop and Francis the famous talking mule and we are

probably down to 300 possibles.

This was taken from my notes in error!

Camper49 said on Page 8 post 14 the beloved line

it doesn't have the word "Time", "First", "Who", or "Mystery" in it
taken from my previous post.

However, let me savor the victory for now. 8)

I got the comic today! Thanks, CG. I don't suppose I need to post the title, do I?

Yes, marvelguy, you savor your well-deserved victory. I shall savor my comic. :D
