I always preferred DC over Marvel war comics. I'd take Sgt. Rock over Sgt. Fury any day.

WWII comics were always readable unless they were documentaries.

I actually liked the Marvel Combat comics better but not by much. What would such a comic be like today? The World Trade Center aside, WWII comics had at least a core of patriotism and literary morality in them. Now we would have an enemy that was far too dark using only the crudest of methods and weaponry being sought by a techno-savvy elite force that would seem to be a bully. The fight wouldn't seem fair!

Fair Fight: Poor bastid, died without even seeing it coming! Sounds fair to me.

I used to read alot of Unknown Soldier from DC when I was young, now that my memory's refreshed, I sure have a hankering for the books. Exactly what was the name of the title that he appeared in?

My favourites were Sgt Rock (Our Army at War) and The Losers (Our Fighting Forces).

The Brave and the Bold #52 was one of my first-ever comic books.
If you ever get a chance to grab that one and read it, do so.
It has appearances by Sgt Rock, The Haunted Tank, Mlle. Marie and Johnny Cloud...a true war classic!

I enjoying Sgt Rock The Prophecy right now. It's pretty good, except the issues are kind of plodding along.

Star Spangled War Stories. He starts with issue # 151.

I'm not a big War fan - but ironically, I'm a big Joe Kubert fan. I like some Sgt. Rock and The Unknown Soldier. But don't forget Enemy Ace! He started out in Our Army At War, had a couple Showcase issues, and then was in SSWS # 138-150 (right up to Unknown Soldier). Great Kubert art!

Unknown soldier was a great book....

Anyone read the old War Picture Library books? Very well written but only line drawn art. Still I thought they were great and would like to get more of them

Okay....I'm finally worthy to contribute on this thread. Picked up on Saturday (yes two days ago, sorry I've been busy) a pile at a garage sale. I saw the pile and made a beeline for it, carefully went through them very briefly because all I saw were 20 cents on the covers so I put on my poker face and said how much for the pile (90 percent unseen). They said ten bucks, I said how bout 8 bucks and the rest is history. Turns out I got 101 comics with nothing higher then a 50 cent cover price..one from 1972 (DC 100 pages Sgt Rock). 42 of them were under 25 cents and even 3 15 cent and 1 12 cent Adventure Comics. Most of them are "Our Army at War", "Star Spangled War Stories", "G I Combat", "Sgt Rock", "The Unkown Soldier", "The Losers", "Weird War", "Captain America" and a few other cool titles. The guy said his mother threw most of his comics away when he was little, I wanted to know if he had more...and of course his wife didn't want him to have them either..when I talked to him about them she just said "I don't know what it is about comic books and boys??" She also refered to my collection of 16,000 comics as a fire hazard....I'm glad they're in a good home now where they will be looked after properly.

Hank,

It's the first comic I remember buying myself when I was a kid way back in 1965 or so and I would like to have one for my collection. Thanks, for looking for me.

Kingdom Come series? By Alex Ross and Mark Waid?? Go buy them right now! Friggin' awesome! (I wouldn't say it's a war comic, but there are some great battles -esp. The Big Blue Boy Scout and The Big Red Cheese!)
