I wanted to read some Spirit books. I have never read any of his books, only that I've seen his image online. The movie will be made by Frank Miller and I want to know more about him.

Is there any trade paperbacks of the Spirit that someone should start with, if so, what are they?

I sold off all my old Warren/Kitchen Sink books before I left for my trip and I sadly ended up selling them for a song..

I'm guessing these books will be right books to start off with.

There are many different books regarding The Spirit. Kitchen Sink, Warren, and DC has some books. I guess they're all reprints. This may be the best way to go in Archive format.

I always wanted to read Spirit stories too, especially since so much has been written and said about Will Eisner and his place in comics history.

I buy most of my trades from instocktrades.com. They are selling a book I'm considering called The Best of the Spirit which is around 200 pages and reprints Spirit newspaper sections from the 1940's.

You can't go wrong with archive editions!

I've never read a Spirit story all the way through. I'm going to wait for the movie and let it all be one big novelty and surprise!

Will they have Ebony White in the movie?

Isn't there a new The Spirit book out now? I think I have the #1 & #2 of the new series?

I was introduced to The Spirit via the Warren reprints during the 1970s, and I thought they were great. They were magazine size. However, the stories were grouped by theme, not chronological order. I believe the Kitchen Sink reprints were in order. The early Spirit, circa 1940, was good, but Eisner really hit his stride in the late 1940s and early 50s.

On second thought, maybe the Warren magazine would be better; They generally printed the best of The Spirit, without regard to order.

Yes, I'm sure Ebony White will be in the movie, but he'll be radically different than he was in the newsprint sections. Eisner did the character with great affection, and White was treated more sympathetically than blacks generally were in the media that time, but still, Eisner did use the prevailing stereotypes of the era.
