"Wow. How does someone even begin to respond to a post like yours, TTH? And this is because any book that has ever been restored instantly becomes "toxic waste" right?

I can't go into the details of the sale because I promised I wouldn't. I will be giving Matt a call first thing tomorrow to see if he minds me sharing some additional information.

But in the mean time you feel like putting your money where your mouth is regarding some of the statements you made...

I've got $5000 that says if you line up 100 comic collectors (or dealers) and ask if they'd rather have a Detective 27 in 8.5 or your B&B 28 that more than half will take the Detective 27.

My business is built around repeat business. Ask Matt if he feels he was taken advanage of. How dare you make comments like those without even knowing what the hell you are talking about?"

__________

How dare he? That's very simple. CGC Forum members take a solemn vow to don their white wigs and make pontificating judgements like that completely bereft of any working knowledge, evidence, or proven facts concerning what the hell they're talking about. That's how he dares to! They ALL dare to do it! THAT'S their expertise. Unsubstantiated pontification. And the MORE thier pontification lacks any real substance, the more they go at it! It happens in 50% of the posts over there. Of the other 50%, 49% of the posts are Graemlin-fests and Greggy-speak, and MAYBE 1% supported fact, if I'm not being too generous. :D

Filter is 100% right. ANY Det. 27, Action 1, or Superman 1 purple label CGC purchased is a sound investment at the right price. The available book population is so limited on these three iconic comics that just owning one at the right price in ANY grade, restored or unrestored is a sound investment. These aren't SILVER age #1s that abound in plentiful supply. If Filter rolled his sales cash on the ashcan book into a restored, CGC high grade Det 27 and Sup 1, he did the smart thing. #allhailme#

That isn't what he did. He SOLD all three of those books to the same guy. That to me sounds like the smart thing. #professor#

Oh! I thought he sold his ashcan for $90K (picked up for $45K), and used the proceeds to BUY a Det 27 and Sup 1, VF- and VF+ restored for about $90K for the pair.

In that case, I think the buyer did the smart thing on the Sup and Det and MAY have erred on the ashcan. Now of course, we're speaking from a pure investing standpoint. I'm sure that there's got to still be someone left who would buy a Sup 1 or Det 27 that ISN'T thinking, "buy and flip inside of 2 years". Somebody who still loves books enough to WANT to OWN one of those two grails.

I would have passed on the Ashcan (ALL ashcans) and instead invested the funds paid for the ashcan on either a Marvel 1 or Action 1. Maybe even that Marvel 1 9.4 restored if still available for $90K or under!!
