Looking through some stuff tonight I came across a program for the very FIRST convention I ever went to....Creation Con '79....in Chicago! (lord....that's almost 30 years ago now #oldie#)
I was still in high school in northern IN and I conned my Dad into taking me over to it. I had a great time looking at comics (& buying a few!) and meeting my very first comics professional.....Jim Shooter! Even got him to sign the program!!
Years later at a Motor City Con while set up there....I sold a large size "Marvel Try-Out" book to him and he told the story of how a (soon to be) famous Marvel artist bought one at a convention when they first came out....did some drawings which he took to the Marvel booth....and they hired him on the spot. The "Try-Out" books then like sold out very rapidly then I guess as word got out that someone had got a job that very day with one!
