Who has some really cool variants? Let's see what you have.
I just got these. My first DC/Whitmans.

I'm pretty crazy about my Whitman variants.
I have quite a few of the Superman and Action Comics Whitmans.
I'll do some digging and get back to you.
I love finding them still in the original polybag. Occasionally they do pop up.
My LCS dude (Hi Joe!) recently picked up some Whiman still-sealed bags that came in from a California collection. Little time capsules.
The coolest part about the still-polybagged ones is that they typically came in threes, so the middle book of the three is always a surprise.

I am a huge nerd for DC Whitmans. With the help of a few friends (scans & research), I built this...
http://stlcomics.com/checklists/whitman
and this...
http://stlcomics.com/gallery/whitman/matriximages.html
All of that needs some updating but the checklists are guaranteed to be accurate. We've been watching the sales of these books for years now. Sales prices for last 2 1/2 years or so have been tracked on our forum here:

I still don't have a complete collection of them, but I have a ton of them. :D

Man, StlComics (James), your research and the time you guys must have put into the galleries is incredible. Variant Mafia, you have my respect.
1. How rare are Marvel and DC Whitman variants? Do we know?
2. I have a weird Avengers variant maybe you can help me identify it. Issue #156 from 1976. It has a regular UPC box. Is this a whitman? Here is the photo attached.

1. How rare are Marvel and DC Whitman variants? Do we know?
We have no real numbers on the print runs. The only thing we're fairly sure of is that the print runs are much lower than the other versions released. The regular newsstand versions are far more plentiful. There also pence editions for many of those book for both Marvel and DC. Marvel was producing pence editions of a ton of stuff from the 1950's all the way into the early/middle 80's. DC only did the pence books for a few years. Many of those can be seen here:
http://variantmafia.stlcomics.com/dc_pence/matriximages.html
That matrix shows that many of those were made at the same time as the DC Whitmans. #oldie#

That is a Marvel Direct Sale edition. They are commonly called "Whitmans" as they were the books that were sold in the Whitman 2 & 3-packs. Many of them were also sold in other outlets though such as the original direct market that was blossoming at that time. They were not exclusively sold as Whitmans and didn't have the Whitman logo on the covers. The DC superhero books are the only ones I consider to be "True Whitmans". #hello#

One more thing...
Our pal Gifflefunk built this site some time ago:

That should be VERY helpful in identifying the early Marvel direct sales books.

It looks like Sgt. Rock 329 Whitman variant is pretty rare. I have only seen one come up on ebay and it went for about $20 -$30. Sgt. Rock is always fun to read and I think I am going to leisurely try and track down this issue.

I also try and get AMS and other marvel whitmans when I find them as well.

Nice JLAs Habib.
A friend of mine offered me his collection of comics for free in the early nineties. He had about ten DC Whitmans. I never went over to pick them up. It was one of those things I wonder about and try to remember which issues he had. Oh, well. They were in crappy condition anyway. I bet everyone has stories like that.

Anybody into Whitman and Dell 'Battle of the Planets.' I loved the TV show when I was a kid and picked up a few of the common issues. There are some Whitman variants in there too. I have a Battle of the Planets #4 that is a Whitman. I believe it is rare but could be wrong.

I used to think that Whitmans were reprints and avoided them. I have a few but mostly by accidents.
I do have 3 Whitman variants of Marvel Special Edition Star Wars #1 that I stashed away in 1978. I'd scan one but they're treasury size and I can't fit them on my scanner.

While they may be a shorter print run than their parallels, they aren't particularly rare. Have a look at ebay, and you'll see.

Don't be too surprised. They are by far the most common, especially the ones with the black circles over the DC logo in the ULC. Any of the later issues that are white over the DC logo (like the JLA I posted above) though, are somewhat tougher. #oldie#

That Avengers #190 is a small diamond direct sale issue. They are the comics that were distributed in Whitman 3-packs, but not not exclusively. They were also sold through other distribution to the then (1977-79) growing direct sale market. They were sold as Whitmans, but aren't Whitmans. Any Whitman books are going to have Whitman logos on them, and were sold exclusively by the Western Publishing Company.
If you refer to the market reports by Doug Sulipa in the last few years Overstreets, you will find a lot of good information on Whitman issues. You will also want to have a look at Gifflefunk's website. He has good info on the direct sale books over there:

Most of the comics I bought new at my LCS back in the late 70s have that small diamond and a slash thru the bar code. I always thought they were just direct sales. I didn't know they were distributed in 3-packs. Of course, I never bought the 3-packs.

So I guessing that the books with the small diamond for the direct market has a small print run while the newstand copies is everywhere, right?
Didn't DC have some books like that beside the Whitmans?

Yes, they are smaller print run, but we haven't really been able to come up with any actual numbers so far. We do know though that with a little bit of looking, you can always come up with some of them. I don't know if I'd call them rare.

There is the run of pence editions they released from 1978-81:

Nice stuff Warlord. I have a bunch of the Superman and Action variants, but I'm always looking to upgrade.
Speaking of which, my LCS dude (hi Joe!) just got in about fifteen sealed packs of Whitman variants (three books per pack) in a dealer swap. About half of them appear to be identical packagings, but there are at least two different Batmans and two Superman & Superboy in there.
He's selling them for $10 a pop. The original bags and header artwork on the bags are in excellent shape and the books themselves look to have only minor spine stress at worst and superior color and gloss.
Anybody interested? I can get the issue numbers (except the center book in the pack) if anyone wants to snag a couple.

I saw a couple of Marvel /Whitman 3packs sell in the $15-20 range on ebay recently. Is that the average ballpark?
It all depends on which books are on the interior. The Spider-Man packs are usually likely to sell for far more than most titles, especially those like Battlestar Galatica and Shogun Warriors.
Is there a site that explains the differences in the various circles on the Dc Whitmans?
That would be my site. :D

It's less common than the packs that contain all issues from the same publisher. Here's mine that has 2 Marvels on the outside and a Whitman Battle of the Planets #4 in the middle.

Here's a pic of the issue that I think is hidden in the middle.

Do you think the middle book is a Gold Key or a Whitman?

Sorry for being misleading. The image I snagged is the Gold Key version of the Whitman issue that I think is in the middle. You can see the front cover edge of the Whitman issue cover when you look at the MTU side of the sealed pack, and it doesn't look to me like the Gold Key logo on the BOTP #4 issue. I think it has a Whitman logo based on the colors that are peeking out being pink/blue/pink in the edge of the logo area.

Its not that you are being misleading. It's that I know almost nothing about these and am easily confused.Yesterday I wasn't aware that Marvel Whitman packs could contain non-Marvel books.Do the DC packs sometimes contain non-DC books?

The DC packs should only contain DC books. It is known though that at least some the Marvel Whitman bags were handed out to distributers without any comics in them. The distributers were allowed to place the comics in and seal them. This is how some of them contain non-Marvel issues. #oldie#

In the 1980s,distributors used to send out empty Marvel Comic 3 for $1.99 bags to their comic accounts. The same bags as Marvel used for their GI Joe reprint 3packs.

Not ugly just different.
When I first saw DC Whitmans in a friends collection I avoided them as well. Hell I could have traded him one X-men for his whole lot. Now I am seeking them out.

Sorry, let me rephrase:
IMHO, the Whitman logo is ugly as hell.

So anybody found any Sgt. Rock 329 whitman variants? I have not seen any on ebay in months.

They are out there. You won't see many of them show up on ebay though. Sellers aren't motivated to list tons of Sgt Rock books like they are Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc. The superhero stuff just sells better.
My copy of Rock 329 came out of a local store's back issue box.
