I thought I'd inflict on, er, share with you one of the strangest serial episodes I've come across. It's Dr. Hormone, Master of Human Chemistry, from Popular Comics #60, Feb. 1941. Just your standard story involving the Defense of America, Mankind's Last Hope on Earth! He and Jane will have to contend with Nazians, the Klan, The Thinker, and time traveling parachutes. Don't blame me, blame Ralph Carlson.

In the very unlikely event that any of you want to know what happened next, you'll have to find Popular #61.

A strange story, but entertaining nevertheless. :)

Really really weird. I love the line "Those foreigners--why don't they stay in the history books where they belong." I would love to see the rest of the story. Hint Hint.

With such an overwhelming clamor for more, I would be a churl to not post more. I don't have #61, and the series was mysteriously dropped by #64 (what were they thinking?). However, I do have the good Doctor appearing in issues #55-57, so I'll start posting them again on Saturday nights.

Well it's Saturday night again, so welcome to another episode with the good Doctor Hormone and his smartass granddaughter Jane. This one is from Popular #55, and is much more ordinary, mundane, and quotidian than last week's. Unless you count the evil Rassimoff, who wears donkey ears because that little pixie Jane slipped donkey hormones into his coffee.

No, the line is
"With his enormous Donkey's strength, Passinoff soundlessly crushes the sentry's skull"

Date? Date.....? I'm sure I've heard that term before, now what does it mean? Is that when I go to the store and come home with new issues? No, no...that's new comic book day.

Is it when I go to that place and suffer for hours? No, that's work.

Sorry, can't help you with this date...whatever it is!

You wouldn't believe how many good opportunities to do something exciting I passed up tonight just so I could be here with you. Watching the Miss America Pageant on TV was just one of many. Anyway, here's the next episode of Dr. Hormone, from Popular Comics #56. Funny that they feature all those other stories on the cover but don't mention Dr. Hormone and Jane.

And I think I've uncovered a scandal here. Notice that the villain's name is now Assinoff. Get it? Donkey ears? Assinoff? I knew you would. But wasn't his name Rassinoff last week? So go back to last week's and look at the name on the first page. Doesn't the R look like it was added later? The registration is wrong for one thing. Look at page 3, top left panel. The R is definitely an afterthought. What does it all mean? I have not a clue, so let's get to the thrilling action.

I don't know if this is good or bad, but I think the Dr. Hormone stories are starting to grow on me.

Favorite exchange:

Assinoff: "How'd you like a pretty young grandmother, Jane?"

Jane: "How would you like a kick in the shins?"

:)

There's plenty of hokey science to draw from here, but what I really like is the strategy for world conquest, according to "The Alligator". "One by one all the countries will fall into my hands... and first of all you two are to help me annex the Philippines!!" Yep, that's a winning game plan allright, once you have the Philippines I imagine the rest of the world will surrender quickly.

Which reminds me of Ogden Nash:

THE PURIST
I give you now Professor Twist,
A conscientious scientist,
Trustees exclaimed, "He never bungles!"
And sent him off to distant jungles.
Camped on a tropic riverside,
One day he missed his loving bride.
She had, the guide informed him later,
Been eaten by an alligator.
Professor Twist could not but smile.
"You mean," he said, "a crocodile

OK Ok, I'll go to bed now.

OK great story huh? No, I didn't either. And having read the Tarzan books, I remember that Opar was several days march from Tarzan's jungle, not right next door. Anyway, here's the question.

What was Trader Willy doing in the first panel of the 5th page of the story (Pg. 34)? Boy shows up at the houseboat with the diamonds, but Willy says "Wait, lad! Untill I'm done here...". Now what was more important to finish than getting the diamonds? There seemed to be three people on the boat; Willy, the servant Bomo with the fan, and a third figure. Now just what was she doing? Any guesses? Is this why they call them "pre-code"?

As mentioned in What Have You Corralers Etc. Lately, these strips are from Peter Pat, 1939. I doubt you'll ever see them anywhere else. These are the first 4 out of 65, I'm not expecting a lot of requests for the other 61.
