So, what was your first comic book?
I have two that I would consider my first comics. Already this may be confusing.
My dad picked up Amazing Spider-man #178 in a drug store for me when I was about 5. I do not have the comic as I must of trashed it and my parents threw it out. I remembered the cover, and that is how I tracked it and eventually got another copy. #spiderman#
My favorite babysitter bought me Legion of Super Heroes #289 when she was buying a New Teen Titans issue for her kid. I still have this one and treasure it. The cover isn't attached anymore and I bought another mint copy but it is still pretty cool. I guess I was about 8 or so when I got this one. As an aside, I loved the Darkseid saga and ending in LSH #294. I reread it often.

That would be a tough question. I remember answering a question like this on the eBay board a few years ago, I think it was posted by Linda (fulltimer56).
I can't say for certain what my first comic book was, as it was probably a comic that was bought for me or bought by my brother. It was probably a Disney comics and may have been one of the following...

However, the first comic I can remember purchasing for myself, was the Treasury-Sized, DC Limited Collector's Edition #C-31 Starring Superman. I purchased this over-sized comic in Virginia Beach at Colonial Mall (I think at J.C. Penney) in August of 1974 (the month that Nixon resigned), I was 10...it cost a dollar, a lot for me at that time.

This comic featured reprints of Superman stories from the 30's through the 70's (the present at that time) and included one of my favorite stories "The Case of the Lethal Letters!". I thoroughly enjoyed reading and re-reading this comic and even though today it is weathered, worn and missing it's center pages, I value it as the comic that hooked me on comics. (Even though it would be a few more years before my addiction became apparent) :D

Mine would have been Walt Disney's Cpmics and Stories form about 1952. I remember them by the Mickey Mouse serial mysteries in the back. It was probably either the Mysterious Pill Plot or the Robot Army.

I really could not say what my first comic was. I was pressing silly puddy on comics long befor I was reading them. The first comic that I can remember buying was the Incredible Hulk #102. I was pretty young. It was at a small con in South Bend, IN. I didn't know it was the first Incredible Hulk at the time. It just happened to be the lowest number I could find. Paid like 5 bucks for it. Needless to say... it was not in the greatest shape.

I don't remember your 1st comic either but I remember buying you lots of Hulks (& more!) through the years!
That South Bend Con was always the best.....it is missed.
Check out a couple comics I have bought lately for your Dad, Maurice and I in this thread.

Hi Nat! Welcome to the Corral.
I can't remember what was the first comic I bought because when my mother went on these grocery store trips every Saturday, I always knew it was time to look at those comics on the spinner racks. She always buys me one every weekend. Ah, those were good times.
But, the earliest comic that I can remember reading is an issue of Amazing Spidey where it features the Mindworm and an issue of Marvel Team-Up with the Human Torch and Iceman battling Equinox. Back then, I was into science and these two elements makes for an interesting story.

Welcome Nat 20,
You make a good point,"I was pressing silly puddy on comics long befor I was reading them." I owed comic books at a young age but I was not reading them until later. I probably started reading them around 10.
When I was a kid I don't remember seeing many Disney books on the shelves. I think in the seventies and eighties super heroes got the best shelf space.

I don't remember the exact first comic I bought but I am thinking it was Amazing Spider-Man #90....."The Death of Capt Stacy".
I had been "reading" (looking) at comics as early as I can remember. My brothers are quite a bit older and they bought comics from the late 50's to around 1968 so when they left for college the little one (me) got into the comics when he found 'em!! Unfortunately Mom found the DC's before me and out they went but I saved all the Marvels!
I grew up on Spidey, FF, DD, Avengers, and X-Men.....great, great stuff!

I really don't know what my first comic was. My earliest recollection of reading comics was in the late 50s. My mother never allowed us to buy comics because she thought they were bad for us. But our neighbors always had lots of comics all the time. That's because they owned a little corner store. Every day, the kids would bring home stacks of comics and we'd spend a lot of time reading them. They would bring the comics back to the store and return them as unsold and continue the cycle. I got to read all those great comics for free. I recall reading all those early FFs and Spider-mans. This continued until we moved away in the late 60s. I didn't start collecting comics until I was in college in the mid-70s. The first back issue comic I bought was Tarzan #207 for a quarter.

The Zeck run is awesome as well. Marvel needs to get him back for more new work on covers only. Currently, I think he's not doing any work besides having commissions.

I had one copy in my collection that was maybe in Good condition and that's pushing it. My first year at Heroes Con I got a Fine+ one from habib and was able to find one other in all of the con in about a VG/F. That's just two from all the dealers that were there that year!!

Can't recall exactly.
The first comic I got as a collector was Star Trek #1 (Marvel, movie adaptation).
My Dad had a collection, and I had read some of his by then, I'm sure.
I got hooked on collecting pretty quick. Spending all my spare change on comics saved my teeth.

Hey there once again guys-n-gals, it been awhile... #hello#!
Hmmm, my 1st comic? Likely ASM #183 (Rocket Racer vs. Spidey) or Spec SM #21 (w/ a super-keen Scorpion cvr.), in fact they may even have been in the same month! #spiderman#
Now, my 1st "Back Issue" I know was Spec SM #1 for a whopping $4.50 circa '86-'87...
It's nice to have you back, SolitaireOne!

I am curious about some of our new members first comics. Which comics got you in and then hooked you?
The first comics I read as a little kid were All-Star Squadron #36 and The Shadow War of Hawkman #1. I still have all the issues, they're bagged and boarded beside the rest of the two series which I bought out of nostalgia.
I didn't really buy a whole lot of comics until I went to the comic shop with my cousin and discovered Star Wars: Dark Empire around 1991. I also started picking up the "adjective" X-Men around the same time. I bought mostly just X-Men and Star Wars comics for several years before I made the jump from casual reader to hardcore collector. I still pretty much buy X-Men and Star Wars comics like clockwork.

I can remember a bunch of early books#oldie#- movie adaptations of "Babes In Toyland" and "The Absent Minded Professor", lots of Disney, but here's the one that lit a fire under me. Truly awful Silver Age Marvel, but that and some British reprints from Odhams press (Wham Smash, Pow, Fantastic, Terrific) made me a true believer.
The Thing/Torch yarn was dreadful, but the Ditko Dr Strange Made me sit up and take notice.

My first comics were funny animal comics, Gold Key Disneys, TV cartoon books like Yogi Bear and Deputy Dawg, etc. Then I bought TOS #54 and FF #31 from a U-Tote-em (and liked 'em!). Showcase #54 (GI Joe), TTA #63, and Sgt. Rock's Prize Battle Tales (80 Page Giant #7) were next. Superman #175, Atom #18, Avengers #15... and then ASM #24- Spider-Man goes Mad!!! I was hooked.

We had comics in the house throughout my early childhood but the first books I personally bought with my own money were the April 1967 issues. They included FF #61, Thor #139, Daredevil #27, Avengers #39, and ASM #47, among others. Unfortunately I don't remember if I bought any DCs during that trip to the drugstore.

One of the first comics I remember owning and reading was the first of a two issue Marvel Team Up, maybe #57, where Yellowjacket is apparently killed in an explosion at the end. I spent a couple of years before I actually began collecting, assuming he was dead.

Probably not my very first, but the earliest I can remember the story from was Marvel Team-Up #10.
I eventually bought a couple of pages of the original art from the book, one of my most prized possessions that I'd never trade except maybe for a full tank of gas this coming summer...

I wish I could remember exactly what it was, but I know my first comic was an early '80s Batman; that and a dog-eared Donald Duck were the only comics in my house until about '87, when my mom went on a ridiculous Archie craze. Suddenly every Archie comic you could imagine was always sitting in our bathroom; I remember there were always STACKS of them on the tank on the back of the toilet!
I never did see the appeal...

That was my first. I have a lot of comic memories from when I was a kid.
My Great Great Uncle (who bought my first book for me) would read me comics from his own collection.
Early Actions, Tecs, but the ones I loved most of all were his GA Horror comics. #allhailme#

My first comics were probably Richie Rich etc. My first super hero book might have been a Gl issue around the time of Green Arrow and all of that. BUT MY FIRST COLLECTOR EXPERIENCE, although I had been "collecting" for a while, was G.I. JOE #2 off of a local spin rack, and I was really disappointed with the fact that I had not been able to find the #1, even though I knew it was releasing and I was looking for it. Soon after, the OPG stated that #2 was rare and the price on it was higher than #1. I was hooked, I had a book that I paid cover for and was now worth, what $50? Does anybody remember that little period. Since then I've been hooked on the whole idea of buying books as an a source of entertainment as well as an investment. I know I'll never be rich from this addiction, but I also know that it's fun.
