SECRET INVASION TWO-PAGER
http://www.newsarama.com/marvelnew/April08/folder2/secretinv_1_t.jpgDiamond’s Previews website is offering a brief two-page preview of Marvel’s next major event, the April-debuting Secret Invasion.
For those of you how might have missed the preview in this week’s issue of Marvel Previews, here they are [below], along with Diamond’s description of the series…
“Suppose a close friend, someone you loved, someone you fought alongside turned out not to be the person you thought they were. Suppose that person that you thought you knew was in reality someone who wanted to destroy everything about you, everything about your life, everything that you cared for, and everything you had fought for in your life. The heroes of the Marvel Universe find themselves in exactly that position – heroes, rock stars, even newspaper editors have been revealed not as the people they were thought to be but as infiltrators, the vanguards of a Skrull invasion, the Secret Invasion!
“Skrulls. Alien shapeshifters from another galaxy, their plans for universal domination have been thwarted by Earth's superheroes since the Kree-Skrull War. Now, with their Empire devastated by the Annihilation Wave and Earth's superhero community torn apart by Civil War and World War Hulk, the Skrulls see an opportunity to claim Earth as a new homeworld, rebuild their Empire, and destroy the superhero threat once and for all!
“For the past 5 years, writer Brian Michael Bendis has laid the groundwork for this eight-issue, universe-shattering event in the pages of Avengers Disassembled, Secret War, House of M, and New Avengers. Joining Bendis is New Avengers artist Leinil Yu, and in this first issue of Secret Invasion they reveal the secrets of the Skrull invasion. The Skrulls have replaced Elektra, Black Bolt, even John Lennon. How many others – heroes, or the common man on the street – have been replaced by the Skrull vanguard?
“Characters readers have known for years will be revealed as traitors. Heroes who have seen friendships torn asunder by Civil War will find common cause. Bendis promises to take readers back in time, to show the beginnings of the Skrull invasion, and to show the perspective of some of the Marvel Universe's biggest events from the perspective of the Skrulls! The Secret Invasion is on! Whom do you trust?”

OH Hell yah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll be on the watch for this series in april
Variant cover will be hard to get so I'll wait til some comic shows come to my area before trying to get them & sending them in to be slabbed
That cover by McNiven is awesome!
I'm really excited about this series. I know it's another "event" storyline, but I guess I am just a sucker for these types of comics!

This promises to be a Big Event that will deliver! It has an excellent buildup over the last few months, and just by the great care that Bendis and Co. have put into it, you just know this is one that will please us fans. I am really looking forward to this one!

That's the same crqap we heard for House of M, Civil War, blah blah. No delivery. I will not be buying this. Which is worse ret-con, OMD or this?

I don't know if this will be a ret-con. This stuff goes all the way back to the Kree-Skrull War, so there is a back history to it. The series will (supposedly) lay out all the cards about the Skrulls.

Yeah, that's what ret-con is, when you go back to a classic storyline and screw with it. Are you saying that Marvel has had this planned since the early 1970's? No, you are not. Therefore, it is ret-con. Terrible ret-con.
I just read the Secret Invasion Saga freebie from this weeks' comics. That was a nice little book that gave the history of the Skrulls on earth from the very beginning to now. Even better, it took more than 5 minutes to read this one!
I have a feeling Secret Invasion will be very good and I am all in for the series and the tie ins. This months' previews have showcased some gorgeous covers to boot. At least instead of thousands of Marvel Zombies covers, we will be seeing thousands of Marvel Skrull covers so ya gotta be thankful for that.
I don't think it will long enough before I see another Suydam zombie cover. bleh.

WWLA '08: MARVEl's SECRET INVASION PANEL
http://www.newsarama.com/WWLA/08/Marvel/SecretInvasion/si_whotrust_cov_t.jpg
(http://javascript:;)Report by Albert Ching
Marvel's Wizard World Los Angeles programming continued Saturday afternoon, with a panel focusing on the company's latest event - Secret Invasion. In attendance? Marvel marketing guru Jim McCann, writers Chris Gage, Brian Reed and Chris Yost and editor Steve Wacker.
McCann began the panel by joking that Marvel knows what's behind Final Crisis - showing a slide of a guy at a con in a Superman costume with a Skrull mask on (or more likely Photoshopped on).
McCann discussed the "homage" covers of Secret Invasion (which can be seen below), like the one reminiscent of New Avengers #1, saying they're not just homages, but there's a storyline reason behind those covers. McCann said New Avengers and Mighty Avengers will, as one might expect, go "hand-in-hand" with Secret Invasion, "like Secret Invasion #1.2 and 1.3."
A slide from Avengers: The Initiative with Yellowjacket shown as a Skrull was shown, though Gage said there are many images of many characters as Skrulls, so "take it with a grain of salt." Gage talked about Avengers: The Initiative Annual, where a high-ranking member of the Initiative was revealed to be a Skrull, and thus it'll tie-in to Secret Invasion in an important way.
An image of Captain Britain and MI:13 was the put up, with McCann saying that it'll show that Secret Invasion is, indeed, a global invasion, with Pete Wisdom, Black Knight and Spitfire playing a role. The cover of #2 was shown, with Pete Wisdom holding the sword of Excalibur standing over what looked to be a dead (or badly hurt) Captain Britain. McCann noted the lightning on the cover, saying Skrulls always seem to attack in bad weather, and that may be a hint - or not.
Incredible Hercules was discussed, with McCann saying that the SI tie-in will be the "God squad," or deities of the Marvel Universe teaming up and responding to the Skrull threat.
Secret Invasion: Who Do You Trust? a one-shot by writers Reed, Gage, Zeb Wells, Jeff Parker and Mike Carey was announced, focusing on these characters: Captain Marvel, Wonder Man & Beast (Gage specified it as the "leisure suit" Wonder Man and "ape" Beast), Marvel Boy, Agents of Atlas and Agent Brand.
McCann said Marvel Boy will play a "really big role" in the main arc of Secret Invasion, so his story (by Wells) in the one-shot will lead into that.
Reed then took a call - on McCann's phone - from Secret Invasion crafter Brian Michael Bendis. "What do you want," Reed joked, "You're not good enough to come to the show but you'll call in?" Now a Wizard World Los Angels panel staple, Bendis was put on speaker phone. He joked that his next project will be a "Captain Carrot and the Amazing Zoo Crew vs. Rocket Raccoon" crossover.
This all led, somehow, to a slide of Ms. Marvel - and then, quickly, one of the Fantastic Four: Secret Invasion tie-in by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Barry Kitson, showing Johnny Storm and his Skrull ex-wife, Lyja.
So what's Chris Yost doing on the panel? Well, he's writing Young Avengers/Runaways: Secret Invasion. Yost said "There'll be a little bit of action" in the book, and reminded that both of the teams have Skrulls on their rosters. The art will be by former Runaways artist Takeshi Miyazawa.
Gage will be writing the Secret Invasion tie-in issues of Thunderbolts (which will be part of the main title), hinting that an iconic Marvel character will be revealed as a Skrull and go after the Thunderbolts.
Heroes writer Joe Pokaski was announced as the author of Secret Invasion: Inhumans, naturally spinning out of the New Avengers: The Illuminati revelation that a Skrull was impersonating Black Bolt. "It's seeing how the whole family deals with a bunch of Skrulls," the writer said.
The first question from the audience was the level of research Bendis did preparing for Secret Invasion. "If you've never read a Skrull issue before, I think you'll be able to pick this up, and hopefully be greatly entertained," Bendis said, via telephone, seemingly to assure new fans. He then said he read almost every major Skrull story, though he had already read most of them before, and that Tom Brevoort sent him a box of what the Marvel editor deemed was the "worst" Skrull stories.
A fan asked how far back the Skrull conspiracy goes, with Bendis quipping "George Washington was a Skrull." Bendis said that it dates to the beginning of New Avengers, and then reassured that there's not going to be anything like someone revealed to be a Skrull and "everything you knew was a lie."
"In the past, Skrulls have been able to detect other Skrulls if they changed forms. Has that changed? Can they still fool themselves?" Bendis: "There's a new science here, and all will be revealed."
"Did you consciously make the Skrulls more menacing, instead of cheesy as they've been in the past?" Bendis said he loves doing that with his characters, citing his use of Purple Man in Alias as an example.
Bendis then closed the call by praising the panel, and saying "no one does more behind the scenes to keep comics fun" than Jim McCann.
This segued into the announcement of Secret Invasion: Front Line, by Brian Reed, which there's an article about already on the Newsarama front page. Reed said the series will allow readers to see events "the same way people in the Marvel Universe see it."
The next questioned concerned the Marvel Boy that will be in Secret Invasion. "Is it the 'Grant Morrison Marvel Boy'?" The answer to that - yes.
A fan asked about Ms. Marvel's involvement int he storyline, and Reed said that #25 will deal in part with how far back the Invasion's origins are - since before Carol Danvers became Ms. Marvel.
"I haven't heard a lot about the role of the Kree," remarked a fan. "No you haven't," McCann answered, ominously.
"Will more villains be brought in," a la the government recruiting the Thunderbolts during Civil War? Gage: "Wait and see."
Gage talked about the role of the Thunderbolts in the crossover. "They're either going to be best weapon against the Skrulls or a trainwreck."
McCann asked Pokaski about his experiences thus far with Marvel. Pokaski called it a "dream come true" and hinted that the Kree will play some role in Secret Invasion: Inhumans.
A fan asked if Pokaski read comics growing up. Pokaski said he was a huge Spider-Man fan as a comic, but lapsed in college because he "started having sex." Pokaski cited working with Jeph Loeb on "Heroes" as helping him getting interested again in comics, and that he dated some girls in college just because they resembled Crystal of the Inhumans (whether or not they wore that weird hair accessory was not revealed).
A fan asked why Marvel characters don't seem to be able to "detect" Skrulls anymore, like Black Bolt being among the Illuminati. McCann said that question will be addressed in the very first issue of Secret Invasion.
"Is Nick Fury going to be showing up?" After playing dumb for a bit, McCann said that Fury "definitely plays a major role" in Secret Invasion.
A fan asked how much consideration is given to revealing a character as a Skrull - specifically, at which point they were switched with a Skrull. McCann and Reed both answered that the story has been very carefully plotted, and a lot of consideration has been given. "Marvel's very careful with that kind of thing especially something that big," added Wacker.
Will there be a Secret Invasion tie-in involving the X-Men? McCann said yes, but they're not going to announce anything specifically yet.
How do Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest relate to Secret Invasion? McCann said, mixing metaphors, "All of these things are like one big chess piece...puzzle."
"Are not just super-powered beings replaced?" McCann: "That's a great question."
What will Iron Man's role in SI be, and would it perhaps offer some redemption for his role in Civil War? "Iron Man plays a massive role," said McCann. "The vast majority of the world doesn't see him as having done wrong," reminded Reed. "The citizens of the United States are 100% behind him."

A fan made the point that the lack of thought bubbles in Marvel Comics recently may have contributed to making Secret Invasion possible, since we haven't seen as many character's thoughts. and can't rule out that they're Skrulls. Reed said that was a good point and we'd have to think about what characters have had interior monologues lately, and what haven't.Aside from the aliens themselves, will other cosmic characters involved in Secret Invasion? Reed: "Wouldn't a Galactus Skrull be cool?" McCann said that some yet to be announced tie-ins will deal with this.

I haven't read Marvel comics in 20 years. (Except for X-Men First Class, which I like). Everything I know about Marvel (Thor and Captain America dying, Colossus being gay, Spidey's OMD retcon, the Scarlet Witch going psycho) comes from reading these boards.
But this is beginning to sound somewhat interesting. These questions are running through my mind; I don't really expect answers, I'm just showing you how far removed I am from what's going on in the Marvel universe.
When was the Kree-Skrull war?
What happened to the real characters who have already been outed?
Did we see a foreshadowing of this when the Alicia Masters Johnny Storm fell in love with turned out to be a Skrull?
Are the Skrulls that were turned into cows back in the early days of the Fantastic Four involved, or did the Skrulls just write them off as buffoons, comedy relief for the ranks?
Does the story run throughout all the Marvel books, or can I follow it by just buying one title?
Am I going to be hopelessly lost, or will I be able to follow the story without even a basic understanding of the Marvel Universe?

There's a freebie out in LCS for those not on the up and up. It's called the Secret Invasion Saga. It recaps everything about the Skrulls up to now. It's worth it considering the amount of time it takes to read it.
That was a great read, MG.
I love all of those great covers you posted up. I'll probably go broke with this storyline!

Not sure.

LMAO, yeah, right! (Laughing not directed at you, Pas). This is modern (last 2 years?) Ret-Con thought up by BMB.
Are the Skrulls that were turned into cows back in the early days of the Fantastic Four involved, or did the Skrulls just write them off as buffoons, comedy relief for the ranks?
Grant Morrison touched on that subject in his "Skrull Kill Krew" mini series. Those "cow Skrulls" are no longer alive, but if I tell you what happened to them, the Marvel Zombies will say "see, the Secret Invaion has been planned since then at least! " which, of course, it hasn't :-) A lot of REAL Marvel Zombies will say that Marvel has had this storyline planned since FF # 2! LOL
Does the story run throughout all the Marvel books, or can I follow it by just buying one title?
You already know the answer to that question!!! :-)
Am I going to be hopelessly lost, or will I be able to follow the story without even a basic understanding of the Marvel Universe?
Lost.

Or evidence that the writers that Marvel have suck. I just read Ennis' Punisher and Peter David's X-Factor, and we have inner dialogue in both titles. Lazy hacks are the ones that don't dare use thought bubbles/captions.

SECRET INVASION DISCUSSION - WARNING! SPOILERS & SPOILETTES AHEAD!!!
All details will be left BLANK! :p
Well, I've read the first issue of SECRET INVASION and I admit, it's got me interested. Although I haven't followed a lot of the series that will be affected by this event, I'm fairly well versed in the Marvel Universe although not as well as with the DC Universe, but that's another Crisis!
First, here's what we know. I won't leave any blanks here, because this information has been out for a while in comics and in previews and such. There was a big super-hero Civil War, Iron Man became a big-ol fascist A-Hole, Spider-Man revealed his secret ID, but no one can remember who he is, Captain America was killed, Nick Fury has disappeared from view completely, and everyone was very surprised. The Newish Avengers fought and killed Elecktra who then reverted to her skrull form and everyone was very surprised. Black Bolt betrayed the Illuminators and was revealed to be a skrull and everyone was very surprised.
Now Iron Man has determined that the Skrulls have invaded Earth and have been living among "us" masquerading as various heroes and others for years. ENTER THE SPOILER ZONE... #oldie#
So BLANK calls on two famous scientists Mr. BLANK and Dr. BLANK to fill them in on the dead BLANK skrull and tells them that he cannot determine who is skrull and who is human. Meanwhile a skrull BLANK is picked up by agents of B.L.A.N.K. right as BLANK-BLANK arrives on their satellite! The BLANK crash lands in the BLANK-Land and the New BLANKERS go to investigate after stealing a BLANK from the Mighty BLANKERS! :D
When the New BLANKERS arrive at the site of the crash, the Mighty BLANKERS show up and boy are they BLANKED-off! But then it is revealed that BLANK is a BLANK as he begins to implement the BLANK plan as he releases a BLANK which incapacitates BLANK! BLANK-BLANK is revealed to be a BLANK and he BLANKS the B.L.A.N.K. HQ! The the BLANK BLANKIER is infected! Meanwhile across town at the BLANKSTER BLANK, BLANK is revealed to be a BLANK and BLANKS the BLANK ZONE, practically destroying the BLANK with BLANK, BLANK and BLANK still inside! (Holy BLANK!) :?
But in an even more interesting twist, back in the BLANK land, a bunch of MU BLANKS come out of the crashed BLANK, many of whom are duplicates of the BLANKERS already in the BLANK land! Among them are at least three who are supposed to be BLANK! Which begs the question were they ever? Missing from the group oddly is BLANK, who we already knew was a BLANK, so does that mean that she was never human but always a BLANK? If that's so then BLANK is going to be BLANKING BLANKED! Oh yeah, and BLANK turns out to be a BLANK and frikkin's shoots BLANK to pieces!
A couple of observations that don't add up. I see that BLANK is among the group. There is simply NO WAY that the BLANKS could have kept BLANK prisoner, if they could have, then they probably would have also been powerful enough to keep Galactus from chowing down on their BLANK. I also noted that several are wearing costumes from the 1970's, which would be prior to the destruction of the BLANK'S BLANK. Also BLANK is there, so does that mean that he and BLANK were never BLANKED? Does that also mean that BLANKO never BLANKED up his BLANK to BLANK? (this is pretty BLANKED-UP right here!) :-?
I'm awfully afraid that this series is either going to punch a hole in a whole lot of beloved story-lines or not deliver the goods. Either way, I guess I'll be on board for the whole run, although I probably won't buy all the tie-ins. I hope my little discussion hasn't ruined the first issue for you, you were warned! #allhailme#

Spoilers
1) What is up with the contents of the ship? Are these guys returning from Secret War? Will this somehow relate to 1985 coming out this summer?
2) Is Susan Storm really a Skrull that has been embedded since, oh I don't know, the Silver Age? Makes that whole Alicia Masters thing seem tame in comparison.

(great recap jay! I was cracking up at my desk this morning!)
What a great first issue! I loved it! The story was all out action from the get go. I especially loved the way in which the Skrulls wiped out most of the earths defenses/Tony Stark Inc. With the release of the prisoners in both the prisons it looks like the heroes will have thier hands full too.
I'm not sure whats going on with the crashed ship either, crm. I'm thinking decoy skrulls with maybe a returned hero or two mixed in?
As for Sue, she may be just an infiltrator that day? According to Johnny, she is supposed to be in Canada. Who knows?? Her attack on the Blanker Building, I mean Baxter Building, was very awesome.
What's going on with Captain Marvel and The Thunderbolts though...any readers of that title can fill me in?
I was expecting a few more big reveals, but I guess they gotta save some for the later issues. I totally didn't see the ending with Hank and Reed coming at all!
It was a great read all in all. I even enjoyed the art. Initially, I was disappointed they selected Yu as the artist because I haven't really been too keen on his style, but he did a great job this issue. There were quite a few awesome panels in this issue.
I can't wait until the next issue comes out! I also plan on getting all the tie ins as well...I just love these kinds of stories!

Hoss, the Captain Marvel/Thunderbolt connection is new. There is nothing that set history between them that I know(canon-wise) of.
I liked Yu on this book now that he has an inker not like New Avengers where everything looks sketchy and "rushed".
I think the reveals doesn't stop there, there will be a major shock or two as the series goes on.
The 1985 series shouldn't be connected but it does connect to the Millar/McNiven Wolverine story "Old Man Logan", the Millar/Hitch Fantastic Four and Kick-Ass. Millar has said the FF books in present happens to Logan's past in his book and then when all the storylines converges, the finale will happen in Kick-Ass because he wanted it to be a surprise in a mature title. Whatever that meant.#popcorn#

Are those supposed to be Skrulls imitating "old" Marvel characters? If not, that is a serious load of horse shit.

I enjoyed the first issue.
I'm not big on the Avengers where this seems to be centered but it's the kind of story I can get into no matter the character.
Was there really that big a cry for the return of 'fro Luke Cage and Mockingbird? (If the panel is to be believed.)
I'm interested to see how this effects Marvel's feeble attempts at continuity or if they're even going to bother. I can see this being really fun as long as they don't end it as a 'What If' kinda story.
Hi jordanscott! Welcome to the Corral!

Hell no! Nothing I hate worse than retarded ret-con. At least Planet Hulk and Civil War weren't ret-con (but boy did the endings suck). I gave up ASM the issue that the twins from Norman and Gwen appeared. See?

Hey, maybe this series will get someone under the age of 35 to go read Avengers 92-100.

I think it's going to be really good. I wouldn't mind the return of a few characters, but we shall see. I wouldn't mind the 70s Vision being back. They screwed him up royally. Plus, I have always been a Phoenix/Marvel Girl fan.

I wasn't happy at all reading that book. However, if Bob Gale gets things done right, Spidey can go back to the future and fix this mess before it gets worse. It wouldn't be a ret-con, it would be a story.

I can't see for the life of me that Phoenix(pre-Dark Phoenix) is coming back. See, if a Skrull abducted her, she'll be all over their @$$ in a minute.

How about this?
Who do you think is a Skrull as of issue #1?
After all the unmasking in #1,I think that Tony Stark, Jessica Drew and Luke Cage are Skrulls.
Any guess?

Exactly what I said when I wrote...
"I see that BLANK is among the group. There is simply NO WAY that the BLANKS could have kept BLANK prisoner, if they could have, then they probably would have also been powerful enough to keep Galactus from chowing down on their BLANK." :p

I vote for J Jonah Jameson. He's always stirring up crap. I also predict Cappy and Nick Fury are undercover getting to the bottom of stuff. When Cappy resurfaces, he's going to administer a beatdown on the Winter Soldier (also a Skrull) because in the Marvel Universe, Bucky stays dead, baby.
Next, Aunt May must be a Skrull because even in the compressed Marvel Timeline she should be 126 by now, but no, she has gone from a feeble 90 year old to a 50ish GILF who's been gettin' jiggity wit it with Jarvis the Butler (also a Skrull.)
Tony Stark, not a Skrull. Jessica Drew, a Skrull. Luke Cage, not a Skrull. You kiddin' me Jive Turkey?

Here's a thought. Didn't the Beyonder create a Manhattan on an asteroid in an issue of the Illumanatti or some such thing? Maybe these guys are pod people from that world. I suspect the Beyonder and that issue are going to come into play here somewhere. If so, I don't think that quite rises to the level of horse shit. Shetland Pony shit, perhaps.

Perhaps after I go home, eat dinner, play outside with the kids, take them to the toy store, come home, frolick with the missus, watch the Phoenix race on television and check to see how I'm doing in my Master's pool, I'll scratch my head and come up with something. Until then, it's MAGIC baby!

Yeah, I'm willing to hold back as to how they will bring him back. It has been a year and he suppose to "stay dead" during that time(one year).
I don't think Bru would have wanted to let anyone else to bring him back but himself.

Yeah, I liked how it was done, a peek in the past. I'd refer New Avengers #40 as the 6th issue of that mini-series. I can't wait for Mighty and SI #2 next week.
I've really been enjoying all the Avengers titles lately. I haven't been as stoked for a crossover as I have been for Secret Invasion in a long, long time. It's really fun.

Both Mighty Avengers and New Avengers came out the same day and both had some nice 'aha' moments. We get some background on Jessica Drew and Hank Pym. So far I like the Secret Invasion storylines in the Avengers titles better than in the Secret Invasion mini-series itself.

I enjoyed the Avengers books more than the main event. In some other books, there's some panels that is taken from the pages in SI for tie-in purposes. I didn't like that.

I didn't think it would be good but it is awesomeness. It ties into the last three big Marvel events. The thing with Tony Stark is the best part. To spoil or not to spoil? Hmm. Anyway, the invasion explains why so many Marvel characters have been acting like jerks lately. It's good, really.

I gotta admit, I was excited when it first started, but it's really lagged for me.
Since I don't read any of the titles that this is a tie-in to, it's not doing much for me.
Call me crazy but I think the mini should have a story and I should get to choose whether I want to read tie-ins or not. The SI core title just seems to be a thought bubble about what's going on overall in the rest of the titles.
I dropped it from my pull list.
I'll wait for the reviews online to see how it ends.

I hate this series, but I must admit I read the Black Panthers tie in in the store today and it was excellent. Probably the best Secret Invasion Tie In issue. I left BP after Hudlin left, but this issue was excellent.

This is exactly how I feel.Just way too much money to spend on tie-ins I don't normally get.I will finish out the run because I hate not having full runs.
I bought every CW & CWI crossover, upwards of 100 books and I'll probably never read them again.
Sad.

You're crazy! What...oh wait...I agree with you! :D These tie-ins and crossovers are really really annoying and a real drag on the old wallet as well. I've had to cut back, I'm not buying any of the SI series except the main. Meanwhile DC is creating quite a financial Crisis as well with their antics during Final Crisis. The whole thing reminds me of the mid 1990's and we all remember how well that all worked out!

I have to respectfully disagree and say that Avengers: The Initiative has the best tie-in story.
