Having a great love for war comics, I'd like to start this thread showcasing any war comics from the Silver Age. My main interest is in the DC Big Five (All American Men Of War, G. I. Combat, Our Army At War, Our Fighting Forces, and Star Spangled War Stories). Here's a scan of one of each of those series.
AAMOW #94 Classic cover!
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j200/thirdgreenham/AAMOW94.jpg
GIC #87 First appearance of the Haunted Tank. My favourite comic, a key book, with a fantastic grey tone cover by Russ Heath.
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j200/thirdgreenham/G.jpg
OAAW #129 Great Joe Kubert cover
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j200/thirdgreenham/OAAW129.jpg
OFF #9 I've always liked this cover
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j200/thirdgreenham/OFF9gvg.jpg
SSWS #130 Dinosaur cover by...is it Neal Adams?
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j200/thirdgreenham/SSWS130.jpg
I'd love to see everyone else's books, so post em if you've got em. :)

Great pick up, and yes, that's being a jerk. lol j/k Everyone wants a deal, right? But sometimes when the price is already cheap, we ought to just pay it and be happy. Excellent group of books with great covers and wonderful stories. Enjoy them!!!
Oh, by the way, I'll start up a bronze age thread for war comics now, so you should post this picture over there as well.

The Rock and Go Go Checks never quite went together as far as I was concerned..... but that's still a great cover. Kubert remains for me one of the best figure drawers in the buisness.... period.

These Fury's aren't my favorites..between the Kirby era and the Severin era, but they'll do in a pinch.

Karma23, I'll agree that the Fury's don't get the recognition that the "Big 5" merit, but I am going to suggest that it's because many (include me) don't consider them "War Books".
For mine, the Fury books are an extension of the Superhero books, just set in WWII.
It was a formula that Stan claimed would make a "War" book successful and he was proved right.
The "Big 5" books are a lot darker than the Fury books and don't have the "soap opera" (I mean that in a good way) feel that the Nick books engender.
Lovely comics and I'd love a run of my own. :D

I'm a big Sgt. Fury fan and I have to agree with your comparison between Marvel and DC war books. Sgt. Fury stories are fun, but they're never riveting the way Rock tales are.
Love em' both though, for different reasons.

I absolutely agree that Fury was a more humorous title, and it rarely tried to take itself too seriously, and I loved both styles, but I hate to see Fury's getting the short end of the stick, they were fun comics after all.
It was the 'Hogan Heroes' to the Big Five's 'Longest Day', and I love em!

Out of all the "Big 5" as you guys call them, the only one I read was G.I. Combat, and that was because it had The Haunted Tank series inside it. In fact, I just picked up one of those bound books, DC Showcase Presents "The Haunted Tank." Found it at Half Price Books, didn't even know it existed. But it gives me a good starting point from which to start recapturing the G.I. Combats I had as a kid.
About the only other "war" comic I read was Sgt. Fury, even though you guys don't seem to consider it a war comic. And on ocassion, Sgt. Rock. Oh, and Weird War Tales and the Unknown Soldier.
Seems odd that Marvel never truly exploited the genre. Sgt. Fury was a good, rollicking, action adventure series, but Marvel could have done so much more with war comics.
The Tales of Suspense Captain America adventures that recalled some of his WWII exploits were just setup as Lee and Kirby tried to figure out where Cap fit into the Marvel universe. So much more could have been done with that, too.

Damn, they are beautiful books HC.
I have thought about getting into DC war (and Marvel Sgt Fury). I don't have many, but these examples "stir the collecting loins".
Especially since Joe Kubert came out here recently - what a gentleman.
Problem is, so many genres, so many books, so little time . . .

Those are great books, Cat.
I collect G.I.C but I always thought that AAMW had the superior cover art of any of the war comics of the era.
Early G.I.C. before haunted tank was great as well, but once they moved to Haunted Tank they got more flashy and verging a bit on the melodramatic.

Well of course All-American Men of War had the best covers. They were by Russ Heath, the master of war comic artistry! (I love Joe Kubert, but Russ is my man.)
Great looking books. I may have a couple of them, but in well-read condition, not nearly in as good a shape as yours.

Well this is interesting. I can't recall ever hearing of Capt. Hunter, and it looks like he was around during my comic-collecting prime. Has he ever been featured in those reunions with other DC war comic heroes... you know, the ones where Johnny Cloud, Capt. Storm, Gunner & Sarge, and a dinosaur from Star-Spangled War stories get together for a secret mission?

No. Capt. Hunter fought in Vietnam. After about eight appearances, DC started to run his unit's adventures from WWII in the Lt. Hunter's Hellcats series.
