I'm still a little shell-shocked, but I simply can't wait to show this haul off:

I obviously still haven't done a full count or title list, but you're looking at about 150 original owner GA books I just snagged this afternoon. From 1943 right through to the late fifties.
I am giddy! #allhailme#
(Giddier than usual that is...#creep#)
More later!

That Archie cover, is that a paycheck on the cover? That must be the book on top when you saw the lot. :)

There's an local old-timer who does "House-Tag" sales and local Antique shows. I appraise books and comics for him prior to his shows.
He called me two days ago and said he had a collection in for me to look at, that he needed them priced for a sale next weekend, but he would be happy to give me first dibs.
I was happy too...:D
They came from a local old-timer who bought them in his yoof. Still living in his family farm-house, pretty much just down the road from me.
Took me about five minutes to suss them up and ask what the owner wanted for the whole shootin' match.
SOLD!
(Sorry, I ain't tellin $$$...:D)

The tags you see are from this old-timer seller.
He priced them from a 1998 OPG...:D

The lot is fantastic! Any chance of a Timely or Atlas in there?

And that's the first Archie Annual by the way, from 1950. The earliest Archie of the lot other than that (of about 15 Archies), is Archie #14.

There's a few "Crime" title Atlases I believe. And there's even a couple of mid-50's Strange Tales.
I'll be putting together a list of books tonight. Like I say, I'll keep you posted.

Cool haul, CG. The Fight Comics is the classic decapitation cover.
And Archie Annual 1 is a tough book.
Congrats!

Thanks Mr.Bedrock,
Yeah...that Fight Comics #31 really is a gruesome classic. I'll get that one and a couple of others up in the GA War thread soon.
And the Archie Annual #1? I love this stuff...this one may be my first read...well, maybe after a Simon/Kirby "Boy Commandos" #21 that was in here too...or maybe after the Captain Marvel Jr. #25...or maybe after the Startling Comics #33....or maybe after...awwww whatever...

Will you be parting with that Startling?
The Charlton Guy
04-30-2008, 05:31 AM
Sorry...they're all parted...
But perhaps a few of your fellow Corralers might be able to help you out. :D
The only books I held onto out of the whole lot was a very cool Simon/Kirby Boy Commandos #21, a 1951 Charton War title, and two early Strange Tales issues (scans forthcoming).
The Boy Commandos is going to be my first book that I have restored. It has some fairly light pencil markings to the cover that I want to get properly removed. Otherwise, it's a shiner. I plan on sending it to Susan Ciccione soon.
As for the Strange Tales? Classic Kirby/Ditko horror/monster stuff. Not high grade (hell, none of these books were) but still very cool books.
What a fun lot.
Thanks again to all for snagging them and enjoy.
And Silly? I'll give you first dibs on the next GA lot I find. Coming soon (I hope).

Well, I'll hope I have some money then. I'm trying to school myself in G.A., something that in this isolated little dust spot of a town we just never could get our hands on until eBay. I am particularly fond of Schomburg.
CG-- How did you manage to part with them all? You said you kept 3? Would you post them, I'm just curious to see them. Did you at least get to re-up (buy more books) with some of the money?

There's a photo of all of the books, the day they came in, in the first post of this thread. And a few scans/photos posted on a couple of the other GA threads.
I sold them right away because I needed to pay a rather exorbitant gas and electric bill. I got a good deal on them (but with a stack of money I couldn't really justify to The Charlton Wife), so I offered a good deal on them to my fellow Corralers, paid my G & E bill, kept T.C.W. happy, and managed to keep the books mentioned above. Not much profit involved, but some, and I ended up with a few very cool one-owner books. A good deal from my point of view.
Hopefully a good deal for everybody.
I came to the realization a long time ago that I simply can't keep everything. But I am like a squirrel presented with a shiny object. I simply can't pass up a stack of books like this.
And I did get to read a few of them before I shipped them out, so that was fun too.

Nice Haul! (Haven't been to this corner of the board for a while.)
Too bad you couldn't keep more than a handful.
Of course, we're all left wondering what you paid... I guess that's not for us to know.
That's the kind of haul I'm always waiting for. I made my biggest haul of vintage books this year, one owner, mostly 50s, mostly funny animal. I paid dearly, might have overpaid, but I wanted them, and they aren't for resale. But I ain't found nithing like you found, what with the freaking superhero stuff. Very nice congrats!
