Mods, please make this a sticky:cool:
An original owner collection from Burntboy (Harry) #oldie#. Very nice colors and PQ. I am lucky enough to be the proud owner of four of his books.
Harry if you see this please be sure to write a nice Bio/History, since you are da man! :D

I agree DJ. I was getting around to starting a Sid's Luncheonette thread...thanks for doing it! These books comprise one of the neatest SA OO collections around. It doesn't hurt that Harry (the OO) is a great friend of the hobby and all around good guy. His story about simply storing these books, sans mylar, sans polypro bags, in stacks in a pine dresser is amazing. I'll be posting some of the SL books I own in a bit.

As promised, here is the first of about a dozen Sid's Luncheonette books I own. As you can see, it's not all about uber-grades. I love this book....it's one of my top five ASM covers...and knowing that it came directly from the collection of someone I know and admire, makes it even better. One of the best private collections that doesn't carry pedigree designation.

I haven't been around since the Tec 27 thread went quiet and Richard got banned again.
There are still a ton of Sid's books in my possession. I'll post the whole back story (on the back of the COA's which were created by Red Hook a few years ago).
and I'll begin posting covers of the Key books in the collection, many of which are still raw...(let's see if I can figure this out).
Here's the very first Batman Annual from 1961;

Here's the Certificate of Authenticity. that's an actual current picture of Sid's Luncheonette on the front that was "doctored" slightly by Red Hook, as the store is now a Beauty Parlor.
The whole story is on the back side.
I will post SA keys every day or so from the collection.........Harry.

I've never heard of this collection until you posted this certificate. It's interesting. I wondered what are the other graded books are. Does it come with the certificate? The CGC label doesn't mark it as such.

The Sid's Luncheonette was never presented by Harry to CGC for consideration as a pedigree. So there is no designation on the label. Some of the other books can be viewed at

Had Harry offered CGC more money, I'm sure he would have gotten label designation.
I wonder if their is a secret CGC memo outlining label designation.

Thanks....
To be totally honest here. there is nothing "official" about the "Sid's Luncheonette Collection". It's just a group of approx 1000 books that i pulled off the shelves at Sid's in the early 60's. When I started posting copies of my books on the CGC boards it created a wee bit of a stir as they were popular books in great shape and i was the Original owner who had purchased them off-the-shelf 40+ years before. So Red and I put our heads together (he actually came up with the name) put together the COA's and began promoting the books as such. Both Doug Schmell at PEDIGREE COMICS and Josh Nathanson at CLINK have accepted the "Collection" status and alow me to use the designation when i sell copies on their sites.
I actually stopped collecting about 2-5 years too soon. based on the condition of the later books (1963- early 1965) i would have had a complete run of Marvels in High Grade for those years.
I actually stopped in early 1965 as i was in High School and embarrassed to be seen picking out comics at the corner store. My last issues to be purchased were books like Daredevil #5, X-Men #9, Fantastic Four #35, Spidey #21, Avengers #11, etc.
Up to that point I had every marvel super hero book in my collection. and some books got through 40+ years in pretty remarkable shape. FF's #11, 24, & 32, X-Men #3, Daredevil #2, Strange Tales #'s 105,115,117,118,120, Tales to Astonish #'s 51, 53, 57 & 59, Tales of Suspense # 54 & JIM #105 all graded out as 9.4's. Plus another 50 Marvels graded 8.5 - 9.2. :D
Here's a few random copies that i have handy, for you Marvel Zombies;

Thanks - the collection has it's share of all grades - these are just some of the nicer ones that i had scans readily available.
as the weeks go by, i'll post some of my midgrade DC's which aren't as easy to come by as many HG Marvels.
and i have a bunch of Low Graders that i picked up in what were called "used book stores" back in the early 60's. you never got any HG stuff from them, but back then, who cared...:D
I remember picking up books 7 for a quarter - the problem was, if i had it, i wasn't interested in another copy as grade was meaningless to me...:(

Sounds good! :)
Is that because you are releasing more of your HG Marvels because of demand, while keeping the DC's stashed with your personal collection?
Just out of curiosity, being that you were buying comics at the very beginning of the "Marvel Age," were you able to sense that something special or different was being created by Marvel at the time?

When FF #1 hit the stands it still had the "look" of the pre-hero Marvels. Number 2 did little to change my opinion. But #3 was a "break-out"issue with the uniforms, the fantasti-car, the Baxter Bldg, etc.
and then #'s 4 & 5 changed comics forever. To this day the return of the Sub-Mariner in issue 4 is one of my top 5 comic books, ever. To a young hobbyist of 14, the concept of bringing back a GA hero as the same person as before was novel. DC had already brought back the Flash, Green Lantern,
Hawkman and the Atom but as totally reworked heroes.
and Issue #5 introduced Dr Doom and despite a rather sucky storyline, he immediately teamed up with Subby in the next issue. The Marvel Age of comics was here to stay..................#allhailme#

Thanks again...in keeping with the Marvel theme, here are what I consider the "Big Four" (The books that got the Marvel Age off to a flying start).
Each of these copies was purchased by me at Sid's almost 47 years ago and I have still have them (except for one).
Fantastic Four # 1, released with a November 1961 date; Certainly not one of my faves at the time. the artwork looked kinda lame (even though it was from the "King"), and everyone was in a "DC State of Mind" at the time. nevertheless, by issue #3 it had turned the corner and nothing could stop it........

IMHO the second great marvel release 6 months later in May 1962. The Incredible Hulk #1. i just sold this copy at the NYCCon as a raw 2.0 (inch long spine split and 4 inch horizontal tear across back cover.) definitely a much-loved copy...
Purists may argue that TTA #27 with the introduction of the Antman was actually second, but here's my take; TTA 27 was actually a prototype issue that tried out the concept of Antman. he had no costume and was up against a similar Bee story in TOS. Antman did finally debut in TTA #35 in Sept 1962, but was relegated to second tier Super hero from the beginning and would change his persona many times in the years to come and get booted out of TTA less than 3 years later.
of course the Hulk only lasted for 6 issues in his own mag and wouldn't get his own slot again until 19 months later in TTA #60.

Now here is where it really got exciting.
By May/June of 1962 there were still only the FF and Hulk out there in the new Marvel universe. (FF issues 1-5 and Hulk 1-2 were the only issues actually released so far).
But in one week (maybe even the same day, but i can't be sure) these two books hit the stands and nothing would ever be the same again for us comic fans; #allhailme#

the Showcase and the Green Lantern were both drawn by Gil Kane and the Sea Devils by Russ Heath...(the GL, the SD and the previous B&B all utilize the famous Greytone or "wash" process that colorist Jack Adler rendered over the artists pencils).

Red
Brad - it was immediately apparent from the very beginning that there was a change in the wind.
at a minimum i'd say that you had heroes bickering with one another, lots more physical fighting going on, an almost complete lack of silliness and some real teenage angst.
it only took until FF 4 for me to know that this was going to be HUGE. By the time AF 15 and JIM 83 were released in early summer 1962, the Hulk had kicked off and FF was fighting the team of the Sub-Mariner and Dr Doom...#woohoo#

I can sort of relate to that. When I was 14 or 15, DC released Shazam! #1 which marked the first appearance of Captain Marvel since the late Golden Age. At the time it was a big deal to me.

Well, today takes an interesting turn into the time when Soldiers and Dinosaurs co-existed during WWII??
I always kinda liked these and for quite awhile Overstreet had them as some of the higher priced war books.
Today it seems as though the "normal" war books with the cooler covers are far more popular.
this particular title started out as Star Spangled Comics way back in 1941 with characters appearing such as Star Spangled Kid, Armstrong of the Army, the Guardian, Dan the Dyno Mite, Robotman, Newsboy Legion, Robin (on his own), Tomahawk, Batman, and Ghost Breaker.
then it switched to an all War Story format in 1952 and the Dinosuars arrived in 1960.
these books are from 1960 - 62...although this isn't officially a Dino story, i think it's close enough due to the fantasy content;

well here's another switcheroo, as I showcase one of my all time favorite series (the early run of Brave and the Bold). It started in 1955 with the first appearances of the Viking Prince (by Joe Kubert) , the Silent Knight and the short lived Golden Gladiator.
These are some of the oldest books that i own and some were likely traded for or bought at used book stores and aren't strictly part of the Sid's Collection (some of the later editions are, however).
in any event, I thought I'd share some of the Silent Knight early covers today; (from December 1955)...

Interesting that it went from "Off-White to White Pages" to all-out "WHITE Pages".
Me thinks it ain't so much "who did the work" as "who owns the book".
That's what I was interested in: "Who had the work done" I think implies "who owns the book".
I think the matter of who did the work is likely to be from a very small field of candidates. In fact a field of one.
Now, I don't play at the deep end of the pool. I won't be bidding on books in this price range. The reason I ask regarding the owner is that if an owner likes to fool with high dollar books then there is a strong likelihood that other, less stellar comics have had their potential "maximised".
I just like to be an informed consumer.
If the info is deemed a little too sensitive for an open forum, please feel free to PM.#curtain#

The owner is namisgr on the CGC boards, and it's public knowledge that it's his book. He told me he also informed the person he just sold the book to, that the book had been pressed. I assume the work was done by Mr. Nelson.
I know that Bob (namisgr) had the unpleasant experience of auctioning off his ASM collection (on comiclink I think) and then seeing Steve Lauterbach reap huge gains from pressing and reselling them (undisclosed). I just think Bob (understandably) didn't want to leave thousands on the table again.
Unfortunately, that is what things have come to at this point. I originally purchased the Avengers 9 from Harry, for $400, sold it to Bob for around $500. I suspect it sold for $3,000 this time around, give or take $500.

Thanks Brad.
Things are getting very confused (for me) in this area. I like Bob (from the "vibe" I get from the CGC Boards) and I know of, but have never "spoken to", Steve Lauterbach.
As explained, Bob's actions are understandable. Doesn't make it more palatable, however. You must feel similarly peeved.
Taking the "high moral ground" here seems to be like pisssing in a dark suit. Gives one a warm feeling all over, but it doesn't really show.
Makes me happy to play in the not-so-shark-infested shallow end of the collecting pool.
Playing "The Game" will be the death of the high end of this hobby.
