View Full Version : The Don Rosa Collection

Accumulated by world-renowned and Eisner award winning comic book artist, writer, and historian, Keno Don Rosa, this collection contained every comic book and magazine issued from every publisher from 1966 to the late 1980's.
Rosa began collecting in earnest in 1962, as he purchased each comic from the newsstands, read them only once, and carefully tucked them away in optimum storage conditions, using archival boxes and a climate controlled "vault."
Because they were stored in such an environment with no use of polybags, each book exhibits a brilliant sheen, deep ink reflectivity, sharp corners and a fresh newsstand appearance.
Since the 1960's, Don Rosa has been recognized as one of the first comics history scholars of fandom.
He has written and illustrated Question & Answer columns for the major fanzines of the 1970's, including such notable publications as Rocket's Blast Comiccollector, CBG (TBG), Comics Journal, and Amazing Heroes.
During the 1980's Rosa gained fame as one of the world's most famous and recognized cartoonists as he worked on the Duck books for Disney and Gladstone.
(above quoted from ComicPedigrees.com)
Hey, Red Hook, here's another Collection for everyone to talk about, Don Rosa's file copies.
I picked up boatloads of his Uncle Scrooge, Donald Duck, WDC&S books because of his artwork...I've always been a fan of his.
I have two of Don Rosa's books, pictured below, very nice books.
Does anyone else have any of Don Rosa's books?

Nice books, camper!
I have a few Don Rosa's that I'll try to post later.

Don Rosa's books fall clearly into the category of a collection imho. Not to take anything away from them, but the books certainly fail to qualify as a pedigree due to the fact that the books are not rare in pristine condition. I'm a big Don Rosa fan, though, and owning a book from his collection would certainly be fun!

I have his Hulk 191 with the certificate.

I'm not exactly sure how they are not pristine enough...especially judging by the books pictured here. If Oaklands can be a recognized pedigree than I don't see why this "collection" can't be, especially after being put together by someone in the industry.

Is it my understanding that Rosa has a large number of silver age books in his original collection that have yet to see the light of day? If so, and if he bought them directly from the newstand and they are in similar condition to his Bronze Age books.... then they would have to be considered for pedigree status.
I don't believe there has been a pedigree designation awarded to a strictly Bronze Age collection yet.

I thought I very recently read that Don Rosa had recently gone thru detached retina surgery on one eye and may need it on the other. Anyone else see this?

Another reason I believe is that weren't some of Rosa's silver age books bought in the secondary market?
As stated on the "other" board, didn't we call this a "collectigree" b/c CGC notes it in the Pedigree field of their books, yet it's called a "collection"? Confusing to say the least. Another confusing note is that who is the king poobah in regards to designating pedigrees? Of course we have CGC, but how did pedigree designation occur before CGC? I don't think that CGC is or should be the end all be all for pedigree designation, but I haven't been around in the hobby to know how it was done before. Unfortunately, because pedigrees are high grade (and of course linked with CGC's services) it seems that the industry is defaulting to CGC.

Before CGC there was this thing called "marketplace acceptance". Over time, a superior collection would come to be accepted as something special.
Now, I think there is the possibility that collections may be injected into the market without a concensus being taken, thanks to aggressive marketing. I don't think that's a good thing at all.

Hey, great thread for one of the known pedigree's that I have a few favorites from! I maybe have 8-9 total for now, but seemed to have 'misplaced' some of my scans somewhere along the way?
Not pictured: Ka-Zar #3 9.4 and a couple of late-B.A. Amazing Spider-Man's in 9.6.
Here's a fave that I've shared here before, also my one-and-only Don Rosa to actually come w/ the original certificate stating such:

It is a tough book in highgrade IMO w/ that black cover and all. I actually had my shot on a 'White Page' 9.6 on Comic Link not too long ago, but it seemed to have a bad miswrap. I wound up being the underbidder and it sold for $93! If it weren't for the miswrap, I'd certainly have bid more.
Worked out well though as this one came up ~ paid a tiny premium (above a 9.4) for this Don Rosa 9.4, but as I said, it did come w/ the Certificate! #allhailme#

Hey thanks, Red! Not sure, I don't think so... I've never seen any? :-? I thought that Rosa's scheme was a one-of-each idea? Not quite like Green River, eh? ;-)

I do recall seeing a book listed twice with 2 different grades on Classics Incorporated. I bought the higher grade one and asked if there were multiples of any issues, but they never responded. So, still unclear.
Here's an Unknown Soldier issue from the Don Rosa Collection.

does CGC only add COA to pedigree books or can some one like me send in a book with COA and have it graded.
very nice books = love that 1st issue special of warlard I have one but haven't sent it in yet it's maybe a 9.0 - 9.2 at best
Red Hook
05-11-2008, 02:36 AM
CGC doesn't issue COA's...they just note pedigree designation on the label if the book passes their criteria. You can send in a COA with a book you wish them to consider as a pedigree.
