It's only a little over two months away! Who all will be going (I know you will be there habib!)
I'm still hoping to be able to go myself! Anyone have any ideas on cheap but clean hotel rooms close to downtown?

If I drive up for a day, am I better picking Saturday or Sunday?

Either one would be good, CRM but you might find the best deals on Sunday afternoon!

that's a week before Wizard World Chicago. I have 2 goals for 2008:
2. Go to Wizard World Chicago
1. Get a job first.

Well I'd let you have one of my two mal, because I'm not a greedy guy, but the problem is I still only get one paycheck.

Even though I've been collecting comics for over 30 years, I have never been to a convention. The one in Charlotte would probably be the easiest one for me to get to, I just never have gone.
Am I really missing anything by not going? Would I have to dress like a Klingon to get in? Not that I'd have a problem with that...I'm just asking? :D

No, you don't have to dress like a Klingon unless you want too!!
Never been to a convention?? You have to go to at least to one and I think Charlotte would be a great one for you to go to!
Hell, jdb, even Arthur has been to a comic convention and he don't even read comics!!! :p

Dude, if you drive down to that, I'll drive up and buy you lunch.
I've been to a whopping one convention, Dragon Con 1991. Stood in line 2 hours and got Frank Miller to sign a couple things, plus I told him I liked Robocop 2. Bought a few funny books, saw several girls dressed as Bettie Page and Vampirella (although at the time my wife could've pulled it off better, but alas, that sure wasn't going to happen).

Not yet Linda......I'll do Priceline in May for $35-40 a night. You don't know exactly where they will put you with Priceline but usually the Hotel is pretty nice.
JDB & CRM....
Come on out dudes and join the fun!
The comic creators are easy to talk with and great deals at the dealer booths (myself included thank you!)
You guys WILL have a great time.....probably go home broke.....but take lots of goodies with you!

The main reason why I attend cons is to meet some of the dealers I do business with online, meet with collectors, and hopefully find a sweet book or three. Historically, cons were the few places where collectors could find and purchase books...now with the Internet, I'm using these events for more personal and social reasons.
BTW, Shelton (owner of "Heroes Aren't Hard to Find" in Charlotte, which is my LCS) puts on a GREAT show...there are small tweaks every year but this is definitely a comic based event...sometimes there is a gaming section but I'd say 70%+ is comics, original art, and artist corner. A little games and toys...not much. By comparsion with SDCC it's a huge swing in the other direction.
I've been to this comic-con and if you are within striking distance I'd encourage you to give it a try!

I think that's who I bought Avenger's 7, 10, 14 and 15 from in February at a small show here in SC, at least that was the name on the bag.

I would go this year like i usually do, but im going to Disney with the whole fam damily (me, wife, 5 year old and In-Laws) so with getting back on Friday evening, i just dont know that I have it in me.
Im going to WWChicago is the next weekend and I am flying in to that, so I dont need to go and be tempted by all the books there anyway.
Sterling is right, for me, conventions are as much about hanging out with friends and dealers who i know than just about comics. Altough dont think im not going to be digging through boxes looking for raw books to buy and submit.

I don't know if I'll be able to go this year. I already have my ticket but with the price of gas, I just don't know!!

Linda...Think about the gas for 3 vans we will need coming from Indiana and you will feel much better about the gas you will be using coming from Georgia!

I know, I feel for you habib! But you will be selling and most likely will be able to cover your trip, right? Is your wife and your little girl coming with y'all?
With the price of gas (right now but it will most likely go up) it would take around $150.00 to get there and back and not counting the cost of a hotel, eats, etc I just don't know if I'll be able to swing it. I might have to have you ship my comics to me! :(
I'm still hoping but it's not looking good!

Yes, the family is coming down....although like last year Robin will probably not be there most of the time. She will be getting some rivercane to bring back home and probably go to a museum or two.
I think the nephews are coming over again to help some (and do some shopping)
Hope you can make it....It is always nice talking with you in person (plus going around getting that portfolio signed is a tradition) but I understand if you can't make it. I do mucho shipping of comics so it would be no problem getting them safe and sound to you if we have to.

Be a little wary in dealing with Shelton. His grading is somewhat suspect and he more than makes up for it in aggressive pricing.

I'm in the same boat Linda. The most I could probably swing would be a one-day visit and it's a 280 mile+ round trip for me, that's a lot of driving for a few hours and a lot of expensive gasoline. I'd probably have no money left to buy any comocs! :(

Yeah, it was probably just an OK deal, but I had squirreled away some bucks I was determined to spend and he had the best stuff within my budget at that show. I think those guys have been around awhile. If it's who I think it is, it's the store I bought my 'Son of the Demon' hardback from 20 years ago.

Shelton has been around for a long time. And i know what it is like to go to a show have money to spend and make what I call reach purchases just so you can buy something.

Everyone in the store claims about how much stuff he has, but his older stock never refreshes and the one box he did show me didn't wow me. I think the closest he came on a book labeled NM was VF+.

If I go it'll be from the east side of Atlanta and I'll only stay for about a half day.
It really stunk last year. The crowd was over ripe. If any of you go, be sure to wear deodorant

He does seem to hold on tightly to the old school style of grading and hasnt changed with the times to a more tight grading style.
