View Full Version : Action #1 - Is EBAY the proper venue for selling this?

Another Action Comics #1, this one is the one that PGX has been crowing about having graded. It's a 9.0 in Restored Grade.
It is a very nice looking copy and no doubt quite valuable to a collector, even with it's disclosed restoration. However, is it really worth $1,100,000.00? It seems like a BIN price this high is going to scare off any potential bidders, assuming they even have that kind of money to spend. And assuming again that they do, is eBay the proper place to list an item with a price tag like this? Seems like Sotheby's or some other upscale auction house would be the place to sell this off.

It looks legit all the way. I think this is the first time I've seen an Action #1 for sale on Ebay. Maybe he was trying to test the waters on Ebay before reducing the price or moving on to another venue if it doesn't sell.
I have bought from this guy before a few months ago. No problems with that.

BTW....is there really more Action #1's out than it was believed? Last time I know about it, it was about 75 known copies in the world.

I've noticed this auction, but haven't paid too much attention to it. That's a real boat-load of cash for a restored book, though.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not questioning the legitimacy of the Action Comics #1, I'm only questioning whether or not this is the best way to sell it. I just can't see him getting a 1.1 million on a BIN auction.

Very high, I know.
The weaker dollar isn't helping at all, perhaps someone with a boatload of Euros would get on the cheap.

What was the listing fee for that? I don't think I would list a Action Comics #1 on ebay. I would go though one of the auction houses out there instead.

Basic listing fee is only $4.Featured is around $20 or so and that's not to bad for advertising.Closing fees would be quite high.
Easy to figure but numbers make my head hurt.

The seller (respected on the CGC Boards, not Bluechip this time) says he has a a tenative offer for $700,000. The Ebay listing is just advertising, of course. I wouldn't sell it through any auction house, especially not Heritage.

I also love how Showcase-4 always puts his foot in his mouth and then has to backpedal. This is like the 5th time I've seen it happen (he's alreasdy used the lame "I was drunk" and the "my kid was using my computer" excuses already), and he had to edit his original post when he realized who was selling the book, lol.

Well, like I said, not questioning the ethics of the seller, just found it strange the way that he was offering it for sale. I wish him the best of luck.

With big ticket books like this, ebay is now more an advertisement site than a selling venue. Not saying that's what Paul is trying to do, but it wouldn't be the first time it's been done. You use the publicity that a book like this will attract to garner interest (and offers) and sell it off ebay, thus avoiding the fees. Again, not saying that's what Paul is going to do with this book, but it happens far more often than ebay would like.

What's wrong with Heritage for a comic like this?? And how does a restored comic receive a 9.0??

Heritage takes too much of a cut - why use a middle man? I'd do exactly what the seller is doing - use Ebay to advertise, never intending to sell through Ebay. He emailed a link of the auction to a local TV station, too. Plus, Heritage employees can bid on Heritage auctions - reason enough to avoid them, along with other shenanigans, like the Heritage Bump, and Heritage themselves buying books that have good "potential" and then having Matt Nelson (who lives like 18 blocks from Heritage, after relocating to Texas) work on them. There's a reason Heritage is located in Texas...
The comic is just that - a 9.0 with the restoration. Just like the Qualified grade, its grade is what it appears to be, with the (R) notation indicating it has has work done on it to get it to that grade.
