I've seen a lot of stuff about this collection and was watching the sales while they were happening. Just thought I'd get this started and see what comes up.

Does anybody here own a Crippen? I've read the whole history, it's worth checking out, his collection history as well as the way some of his books were stolen and sold and how that actually created more interest and mystery about the books. It's an interesting story.

It's really sad how some of the books were stolen and sold years before the owner died. Imagine how impressive it would have been to see the entire collection intact.

Hell, I think that it's sad the collection was broken up. I would love to walk into the comic book hall of fame, one day soon, and see the whole "D" collection up.

What was the page quality like?I heard it was kinda shakey on some books.

Someone asked about page quality on the Crippens. In my experience the page quality is very in consistant and across the board. The books came out in two batches. The first were apparently taken and sold a number of years back without the Crippen's knowledge. The books from that batch had generally above average, with some exceptional page quality. The large batch that came out through Heritage was of generally average paper quality to, in some cases, inferior. As a whole the paper was worse than the first batch. But even that is inconsistant. There are some in the recent batch that had average to above average paper, probably due to where they were located in the stored stacks of books.

Bought several of these back when they were called "D" copies and they seemed okay. Didn't cost that much either. Then they got encapsulated and promoted and I bought some more and not a one of them looked anything close to other books with similar grades, or I should say labels.

I don't collect pedigree comics but have ended up with 3 "Crippin" comics I can share.
I purchased these Native American related comics at the Motor City Con a few weeks ago for my wife who collects them for research purposes. I am sure that one day she will write an article on the stereotyping & portrayal of Native Americans in comic books through the years.
Here is a link to a program at the Eiteljorg Native American Museum here in Indiana that my wife & I were a part of last year.

Anyway....on to the "Crippen's"

I find it funny that they came out of a house here in Montreal...it's a local pedigree for me!

I bought a couple of Crippen books in a Heritage auction and they were substandard and over graded to the point where I lost all faith in cgc as an unbiased grading entity. I don't buy the argument that some slip through the cracks. It was a pedigree bump along with a deliberate dumbing down of the grading process. Inconsistency is not acceptable in that kind of a business.
