So I'm not sure why this guy gets so much hype. I really don't like his work so far. Please show me I'm wrong.
Maybe I'm an idiot, but who is Baboy?

I'm with you Hoss. I like to think I'm up on artists from all eras (I don't hate Moderns like many old-timers, get some every week, but never read Wizard) but I have no idea who Baboy is. I did a GCD search and got no results. I checked Wikipedia and it's a Phillipine comic strip started in 1988???

Oh, if you want to rag on Golden Age artists, I'm all for that. I think most of their art is amateurish and unattractive. I don't know why people think Schomburg is so great. Same with Raboy, Lou Fine, LB Cole, Joe Shuster, Shelly Moldolf, CC Beck, Bernard Bailey, and Bob Kane, who is THE worst, I can't believe Batman took off with that art. It wasn't until the early 50's when EC showed up that the art got much better (except for Bernie Krigstein). Compare Al Williamson to Bob Kane, nuff said. I think Will Eisner is overrated too, but he doesn't suck.
How's that? :)

Mac Raboy was one of the best artists of the time. There are better of course but he ranks up there. I think only Schomberg would rate higher .... at least for covers. The best way to compare artists is to side by side it with other artists on the same character (if possible). I rave about Floyd Gottfredson (the best Mickey Mouse artist of all the time) but most people would just go feh, you've seen one MM artist you've seen them all. It just isn't true Floyd brought a life to Mickey that no other artist has been able to do. The same goes for Mac Raboy no one was better.

STU Schomburg's art is amazing, I love those racist, sexist, ultra patriotic covers he did and he seems to really have changed the style of comics in general.
Those Raboy covers are kinda cool, although I have to admit that that Flash Gordon #7 is my least favorite cover from the series.

I'm not a big fan of Bob Kane art. But I can understand the appeal of his art. It was fresh and exciting for the time. I liken it to the many different periods in fine art; Renaissance, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Modern and Contemporary. Personally, a lot of the Modern art like Cubism, Dada, Abstract don't appeal to me. But I can appreciate the influence and impact they have. It's a matter of personal taste.

Eisner is not overrated at all. #bash1#
Is too! :)
I do like what he did with the titles on the first page, very stylized and creative, and I believe he really started the splash page? But besides that, his interior work doesn't look like anything special to me. Modern artists could take a lesson about storytelling from him, sure, but his characters just seem... plain.
How about this pic? This "femme fatale" looks like an ugly woman Liefeld drew it...
(Oh man, that was low. I apologize :)

Hairy armpits, yuck. Who do you like STU? Post some of what you like, especially non covers and I'll try to do the same. Does anybody remember the guy who did the mini "NEMESIS"? I liked that art as well as the guy who did the ELRIC PC stuff. It reminds me of the Flash Gordon Four Color #190 I posted in the GA cover thread.

I think that's just shading, not hair, lol.
Here's my list of artists whose work I collect, alphabetically, but Neal Adams is #1, Gil Kane # 2. I rarely buy books for the cover alone, so it's these artists' interior work I collect:

Dude, you know your artists. At least you know what you like. I've always been scattered as far as my collecting goes, I appreciate your sincerity in who you like. I didn't see Corben or Starlin in your list. I like their art, do you? I also like the Grimjack art. I tend to like comics for the stories more, but don't remember the exacts as well as some here. I infuse them as part of my being, but don't know how to attach them to reality.

Thanks. Starlin is on that list :) and I do like Corben. He's one of the artists I like but doesn't really make my Top 50, in the sense that I'm not actively collecting his work right now. Although I am getting his new Lovecraft series, so that might be considered "actively".
There are other artists like that - Al Fedlstein comes to mind. His covers are great and his interior art is decent, but not good enough that I want to collect it all. There are other artists whose work I have that aren't on the list, like Paul Gulacy, John Severin, Paul Smith, Mark Schultz, Evan Dorkin, Mike Grell, Steve Bissette, etc.
I've also been very lucky, as I've been able to meet many of these artists and get some books signed. This book alone has autographs from 7 original EC artists :)

Nope, just a collector for the past 30 years, since I was 7, and I still have all the comics I've ever bought. And I've lived in areas (Connecticut and Seattle) where it's easy to meet lots of creators. I went to the Heavy Metal 20th Ann. show at The Words and Pictures Museum in Northhampton, MA. That day alone I met 20 creators (and about 1/2 of them I really wanted to meet).
