You all inspired me to go out and buy my first new comics in over a decade (although I did read a few online in the last few months) I brought the Batman/Grendel compilation GN that was for sale and a couple of Transmetropolitan trades.

Good stuff. Now if business gets better I might become a regular buyer again.

Since getting back into comics a few years ago, I've yet to start buying new comics on a regular basis. In fact, I can count the number of new comics I've bought the last year on one hand. It's hard for me to get into new comics when there are so many wonderful old comics out there.

I can understand that.. I think that comics have pretty much exceeded the price point I really want to spend on new books. I thought they were outrageous at $2.. certainly enough to disuade new readers from trying many books.

Welcome back to the weekly grind. There's some good stuff out there for the discriminating reader. I also only get two or three books a week, and most of them are not superhero books. And I don't want to pay $4 to try something new.

Plus, I don't want to have to buy a dozen or so different $2.99 books to get the whole storyline.

You can always wait a few months and buy them on the cheap on ebay!! ;)

FT knows, that's what I do. I know some folks have an aversion to dropping $100-$150 at a time, but if you wait until a series is over, for instance "Y" you can pick up the whole run in one lot if lucky, and at most in three or so. I'm building the second SWAMP THING run now and have bought in one lump sum, the entire 1-75 DD run, the second HAWK & DOVE run, the 30+ Cap run blah blah etc. blah blah.

There is just no way, with all the cool books there are out ther to be found for cheap that I am going to pay $4 per book for a series that might not even complete.

But, since your talking about GRENDEL/BATMAN as new (it's pretty old) I can mention a few moderns I liked.
Violent Messiahs
The Filth
Top 10
100 Bullets
I can't recommend the whole 1-75 DD run, but if your a DD fan the beginning of the series is great.
Hellblazer
Books of Magic
Uhmmmm, that's all I can remember. I bet the other corralers have suggestions.

Well I was always a big John Constantine fan so I picked up some hellblazer and some of the earlier DD stuff on e-bay. I;ll let you know what I think.

EP... You need to get some TPB's of any or all of the following:

Y the Last Man
Fables
100 Bullets
Walking Dead
Punisher MAX
Captain America (the current volume, Vol.5 I think)

IMHO, you really can't go wrong with any of that stuff. ;D

Early DD is kinda dorky. Hellraiser is great, I'm working through it right now, picked up a big run from Metropolis a while back. I also liked X-Statix, the art is weird and the story approaches hero groups with a modern twist.

I've heard that the new Cap is hot, it sells on eBay that's for sure, I may have to try that out.
What are WALKING DEAD & FABLES like?

Hmmm, I'll keep that in my head (Fables and Walking Dead) and get on it after I'm done checking out early Vampirella, EC re-prints and Morrison Swamp Thing. I'm also thinking of checking out Animal Man.
