View Full Version : Opening a CGC case

I finally own a certain book from the mid-1970's that is graded 9.8 by CGC.
I currently have the same book graded 9.4 by CGC.
I want to crack the 9.4 case open and remove the comic without damaging the comic.
I recall seeing instructions and video clips in a thread once about how to do this.
Does anyone know how to do this or where to find instructions on doing this the safest way?

Wouldn't it be wiser to unload the 9.4 on eBay and use the money to purchase an un-slabbed copy of the book? Since the slabbed stuff seems to bring a premium price, you'd likely get more for it than it's worth and have a little change left over to play with. #oldie#

This one pops up on the CGC boards periodically as new people find it.

but hadn't really intended that in this case.

Wow, what's with the porno soundtrack? And why keep the CGC label since the act of removing the comic from is carbonite tomb invalidates any meaning the label might have ever had?

Perhaps this person feels that the books will never be damaged now that it's out of the slab.

Personally, I agree that once it's out of the slab, the grade paper just becomes a bookmark with writing on it.

Hey JAYDEEBEE, you are correct.
I'll unload that one on eBay but I do have a BATMAN 289 CGC 9.2 that won't get much on eBay so that's the one I want to open.

Thanks for the video post...the corporate firewall won't allow me to watch it here at the office so I'll wait until I get home.

As far as the label, you're encouraged to send it back to CGC or at least the serial number so they can update the census of slabbed books. I've cracked a few slabs on books that had damaged holders or whatever and keep the old labels on my bulletin board "Wall of Shame"

I suppose that video shows a better way of doing than what I tried... #jester#

I can't believe you actually put a PGX slab in your mouth. E. Coli is nothing to fool with.

LOL... That isn't a PGX slab, it is a CGG slab from before they went off the deep end... #oldie# :D

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I try to sell comics I grade as close to CGC as I can, (and yes, I have broken a slab, just to check it out) but I rarely buy anything that is advertised raw 9.0 or above and get them in that condition. Check out my newest thread about comic book artists on the cover. The Flash and Superman book were both advertised as above 9.0 and neither was.
I would keep the book in the slab and just forget about it. I know that's the hardest thing to do when your interest is in that area, but it can also prove to be the smartest thing to do.
