Anything by Ed Brubaker - Captain America, Criminal, Daredevil
Also Brian Michael Bendis - Daredevil, Alias
There's some amazingly good comic reading in these...#oldie#

Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming's Powers.

It's a take on superheroes on par with Wanted and The Boys.

I can't recommend "Y - The Last Man" highly enough. A 60-issue series that's collected in 10 TPBs.

It's a must-read.

Try Fables vol. 1 from Vertigo. If you like it, which i'm sure you will, then you'll love the other volumes as well.
Hellblazer is also something that i've always enjoyed and it's more stand-alone than Fables ( meaning you don't necessarily have to buy the first volume ). Try out Hellblazer:All His Engines for starters.
100 Bullets vol. 1 is a must. And Fell is a really under-rated book, since i hardly ever hear anyone mention it here or on anywhere else.
Hmmm..What else, what else..Ahh, speaking of under-rated ( and another Warren Ellis penned book ), I highly, highly recommend Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. It's truly funny stuff.
And when it comes to Graphic Novels, there's none better made in recent years than Pride of Baghdad. Truly a masterpiece.
I think that's all for now.
Gotta go back to work..#bash1#

If you like batman, Batman: the Killing Joke is great, as is Batman Year One. It doesn't necessarily fit what you have read, but as a previous poster did with Fables, you should really try the first Sandman trade, Preludes and Nocturnes. Sandman only gets better after it, so if you like the first trade you will love the rest.

Fables -- great story,

Invincible -- great silver age feel with some modern age themes

Y: The Last Man -- amazing how well they did the old "last man on earth" cliche

Astro City -- classic

Ex Machina -- great political drama/superhero story

a good thread to revive.

I always say Preacher. It's an awesome story. It's done so you can just blow thru the trades without worrying about a delay tween books.

DMZ is great as well. No supers. A reporter stuck in war torn Manhattan.

I'd been sitting on Walking Dead volumes #1-8 and recently received #9.
Started reading them 2 weeks ago and finished #9 last night. Whatta series! A real page-turner! Everything I've read by Robert Kirkman has been excellent. Invincible & Ant-Man mini....Highly recommended!!

Just placed an order with In Stock Trades.

Unpacking my office and found all my trades and that got me itchy for something to read.

So I ordered:

DMZ Vol 6
Powers Vol 10
Invincible Vols 2 and 3
Goon Vol 1
Dead @ 17 Vol 1
House of Mystery Vol 1 (current, not the Archives)
Punisher Max HC Vol 1
Locke and Key HC

If I'm really lucky they'll get here in time for the weekend.

Probably not though but then I'll have something to kick back on the deck with after work next week.

Trades I picked up recently...

Batman Heart of Hush - Read it and loved it but I am a sucker for Dini on anything Batman.

Batman Haunted Gotham - Reprint of a 3 part elseworlds tale by Doug Moench and Kelley Jones team. Have not read it yet

Batman the Annuals - It will take awhile to get throught this one. :)

So I read Dead@17 today and rather enjoyed it.

Cool artwork. Not the usual zombie story. Pretty engrossing.

Only problem was that when they reformatted it from individual issues to the trade format, they didn't do enough binding side border. Too many times I had to force it a bit or tilt the book to read whatever was going on on the left side.

Othrewise, pretty good read.

Covers are cool and looked at ebay to maybe get a couple issues and they're going for pretty decent $$ with Josh Howard's auto. And not even GCGed.

I agree it's been getting darker and darker.

There are no friends it seems except those from the first few issues and they are suffering attrition.

I can't wait for #10 to come out see if there's any sort of uptick.

There's gotta a few more nice people out there.

I do think it's a fairly believeable, if not sunshine and happy, look at life after, from a strictly human interaction point of view.

Finished Powers V10 and thought it was pretty good.

The series had been in a bit of a lull, i felt, but the 2 mains are getting some interesting development again.

Working my way thru Goon V1, now.

It's great. I didn't know anything about it going in other than that everybody raves about it.

The art is great and the dialogue is hilarious!

Rather than start up a new thread, I am posting this here:

Has anyone read Nocturals? They are collecting the series into three separate HC and the first one was released in 2007 (I think) and volume 2 was just released at the end of last month. I wasn't going to collect them because I though that the second volume would not get released but it has and the storyline looks good.

Any opinions on this series?

Thanks for the heads up, I just noticed that Vol 2 is out as well. From what I understand this is a series and not single standalone stories with the exception of issue 13 (which I am still looking for). Is that correct?

Each issue had a stand alone story of one of the patrons of the bar in the House but it also has an ongoing story about the House and the people that are stuck there.

Over the weekend I read Legend of the Five Rings: Death at Koten.

Very good as a stand alone.

Even better if you're familiar with the CCG or RPG.

Yesterday and today I finished Invincible Vol 2. Other than Allen the Alien, it was fairly bland. Hoping for better in V3 when I get that.

Today I started on Locke and Key HC V1 and it's pretty good so far. Good story, great house idea and love the art!

I wrapped up Invincible volume 10 yesterday.
It was okay but not the best of the softcover run.
I think Robert Kirkman is showing signs of "Too Many Writing Gigs"...stories get a little simpler to make all monthly deadlines. Story depth becomes secondary. Less bang for the reader buck.

Read Spectre Crime and Punishment which collects the first 4 issues of John Ostrander's run on the title. I am blown away, well written and drawn. I wonder if the entire series is this good or does it get a stale after awhile. I adore Ostrander's Suicide Squad run and his Deadshot mini was fantastic.

I picked up the first World of Warcraft trade.

I was desperate for something to read just in case I had to wait for a while for my drug screen so I picked this up on a lark.

Surprised by how much I've enjoyed it.

It does a good job of capturing the world of the game but at the same time provides a nice, independent story set in Azeroth.

I don't think you'd need to be a WoW player to enjoy it. A nice, fast paced fantasy romp if you've got no background in the game.

Thanks. I will probably get to these next month!

I don't know how other people shop for comics but I take out anything that looks interesting and continue to pile it up until I am done. Then I look over the stack and figure out what I want i.e. how much money do I have. I had picked up Castle Waiting without reading the title I just liked the cover. I hadn't even realized that this was the book recommended here on these boards until I looked at it when I got home. I have been wanting to try this series and I hope I didn't miss anything else that the seller may of had on this title. Anyway, the seller also had the first 6 Dresden files books so it was a good hunting day. Now I just need time to read all of these books.

jordanscott
01-26-2010, 01:06 PM
Proof is about an x-files type branch of the FBI but rather than Mulder and Scully, the main character is Bigfoot. The FBI maintains a sanctuary for the various urban legend type creatures that can be captured.

There's some backstory to him but basically it's a double play on the word because he's the proof but also he searches for proof of the x cases he's assigned.

First volume is about a Chupacabra.

It's actually better than the rather crap description i just gave.

I'm interested in how good the first Trade is too.

Just read The Twelve HC, issues 1-6, by J Michael Straczynski. I would highly recommend. I really ejoyed it. Just picked it up this week in the discount bin. It claims it is part of a 12 issue storyline.

In The Comic Shop News #1277 (new one) they say The Twelve # 9 is due in February after a long delay. The indicia of my HC says first printing 2008 so, it may be a LLLOOOOOONG WAIT 'til it is completed. 1-6 was worth reading!

If it wasn't so good it wouldn't annoy me.

No, what's annoying is that some of us were buying it off the stands when it was coming out regularly at first, then more and more erratically!! They've left us hanging with this story for 3 years now! JMS is a great writer, but has a strange problem with deadlines.

Yes, I did.

The stories were good, if not spectacular and the Brother Night arc was very enjoyable.

They're building up a history and a world around her, which I like.

But, of course, DC always gives the shaft to their mystical titles so, if she made cut into the new 52 and the new universe, i'm sure she won't have a stand alone title for much longer. Bastards.

I keep forgetting that it was only a few months ago but, it doesn't matter any more. She's in Dark JLA which is pretty good so far. Lots of mystical in the new books. Shade, Swampy and Animal Family, Resurrection Man, Deadman etc... They seem to be sniffing around each other in a support capacity. For now? ;-) Some are not 52 but, minis.

I have always liked DC's magic characters, but never felt they were getting the right treatment. However, I did like the latest version of Madame Xanadu; I read it faithfully.

I've always wanted to love a Zatanna comic as much as I lust after the lady herself, but she's never really found her footing as a solo act. This last series was pretty uneven. Even so, I'm sorry to see it go.

Now Shadowpact; I had hardly even heard of most of the characters when I picked up a copy well into its run. I really enjoyed it and bought back issues at my LCS. What was it about how Shadowpact was handled that gave these second-tier sorcerers good exposure, while Zatanna and Madame X have had spotty pasts? I wish I knew.

I think it's precisely because they were 2nd tier characters that DC didn't put a lot of pressure on Willingham.

A bunch of cast offs from DC and Charlton that never saw regular use and nobody (i don't think anybody really knew who most of these characters were except the really hardcore geek among us) really knew. So there was no worries of damaging the stories of one of the Trinity or doing something that was going to effect DCU Continuity.

Not that I know what it's like to write comics but I'd think that's about as low pressure as it can get in terms of expectations.

I would suggest the following

Morning Glories - Love the series switched to TPB so I re-read them because it takes a few reads to get it
Hack Slash - Campy Horror I suggest only the first series currently
The Vault - TPB comes out in January great read already optioned for a movie
Batwoman Detective comics- I think the trade comes out in a few months great run
Breed - An old Malibu title, but they just brought out Volume 3 this year so should come out again soon.
Secret Six - The best backstabbing villainy book at DC. Simone did a great job here for 2 years at least.
Batman Hush - Greatest modern Batman story I think
Batman 10 Nights of the Beast - Batman meets his Russian equal.

Love Morning Glories. It is my only thing I am currently reading in trade. I just picked up a small collection and was thrilled to see Breed and Breed II in it. I have been so wanting to read this series. Probably won't get to it until mid summer though.

So did you like Secret Six? I read the few Catman issues and I wasn't too crazy with the direction it went in. I only read a few issues prior but don't think I wanted to investigate this series further.

Finally, Ten Nights of the Beasts is a highly overlooked Batman gem. I love the ending.

Back up and read Villains United first then move onto Secret Six and see if that helps. They originally started as the 6 issue mini Villains United.

A couple of their storyline are just fantastic including the creepy villain in the box and the get out Hell free card. I thought that was their best storyline. It lost wind around issue 25 probably about when they knew it was going to get the axe.

Breed is just different is all I can say. It might have been I was in college at the time, but I thought it was really good. If you like Breed and Breed II let me know and I will send you Breed III if you cover shipping for me.

I am leery of Gail's writing after reading her Deadshot in Birds of Prey Dead of Winter. It actually made me skip this series but I read a few issues here and there.

That is nice to off me Breed III but no worries. I am not even sure when I will have time to read it.
