Check out the logic of why you should pay $34 for an incomplete book.

#rofl#Well, he does mention that it's a display comic!

I'll admit that I've nabbed lower-grade CGC books simply because they "diplay" nicely.

Actually, there is a certain logic to this if you're going to accept the basically illogical premise of CGC in the first place. What difference does it make if the pages aren't all there if you're going to seal it up and never look at the pages anyway?

Well ... there are no rules about removing the books from the CGC case. In fact there are many folks that do take them out of the cases. Yes you do technically remove the "official" grading status but it is all about the book right? There is absolutely NOTHING preventing you from removing the book from the case though.

Myself would completely disagree with the grade. Qualified grading is a joke and certainly doesn't help people grade their books. There was a time when a book like this would have graded Poor (0.5) but with the advent of CGC there has been a rewriting of grading rules and the concept of restoration. Of course CGC can get away with it because cognitive dissonance and money work miracles. When you are dealing with the raw world of comics though qualified grading and "conservation" never get a pass and grades are adjusted accordingly.

I wonder if the current high bidder has a coverless copy of the book.

or just the four missing pages.

I held on to a coverless copy of Uncle Scrooge #1 for something like 40 years, waiting for a cover to come along. So finally 2 years ago I gave up and paid $100 for a VG (complete) copy.

I sort of give CGC a pass when they do this because I think the intent is to give the owner incentive to leave the book as it is. I think it's the same reason they sometimes give generous grades to really ugly books. It may seem a bit silly but when it comes to grading one man's unpardonable defect can be another man's who gives a shiz? Any attempt at a compromise will invariably involve a bit of silly.

Love the seller's comments:

"Fortunately it's an appealing cover and because it's CGC'd means you can't get to the pages anyway so in a convoluted sort of way it defines what CGC is--a locked up cover display. The other interesting thing about POPULAR #75 is why someone would pay the $29 to have a comic with story pages out professsionally graded. Unless they didn't know POPULAR #75 was incomplete and were unpleasantly surprised when they got their high grade comic returned with the "QUALIFIED" green label."

And well said, Ox - rant on! (I loved your rational commentaries over on the StL boards, and am really happy to see you here!)

Malaprop - I've done the same thing (hanging on to that incomplete comic waiting for it's missing piece), but once - just once! - I had a bit of luck:

The same week I was finally going to sell a coverless Timely with a missing centerfold, I found a copy with a cover and centerfold, but EIGHT missing story pages. (What are the odds!)

So...

Anyone wanna buy a Timely with no cover, no centerfold and 8 missing pages? :)

(It's otherwise PRISTINE MINT!!! Qualified 10.0!!!)

(Okay - maybe the pages are a bit brown.)

Word. It's incomplete, it's poor condition or un-grade-able.

I'D PAY $34 for that.
