Anyone else dig the bronze age Batman as much as I do? I love the covers and most of the stories are decent. Great artwork during this time too! So what about you guys and gals?

Hey, let's scan some of our favourite BATMAN covers from the Bronze Age and post them here!
I'll bring some of mine to the office tomorrow, scan them and post them.
Great thread, SP!

Here's a batch of BA Detective 100 pagers.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a240/the-charlton-guy/detective100pg-lot.jpg

Sorry, they are sold (to a very patient fellow Corral Member who may or may not be downing Guiness off of the River Shannon as we speak).

These books are SO great. Spanning the 40's through the 70's, these 100 pagers make for an encyclopedic look at Batman's past (with a new story or two thrown in as well).

Ah, the 70's...when a comic book was still a comic book...

Camper: Great idea! Can't wait to see some of your books. I'll add one to the mix.

CG: Sweet books. I remember seeing that lot of yours. Glad someone picked it up.

One of my favorites:

Well, being the Friday before a long weekend, I had some time on my hands at the office this afternoon.

I scanned some of my favourite Bronze Age BATMAN covers.
Next week, I'll see about scanning some of my favourite Bronze Age DETECTIVE COMICS covers and BRAVE AND BOLD covers.

First, I'll try the thumbnail thing and see if that works.

Here's an old favourite of probably everybody's (sorry, this one is only my duplicate, had the wrong one filed in the box)....

Hey, it worked!

Okay here's a few more of my favourites, done by Adams. Not only are the covers awesome but so are the stories.
Yeah I know, these are obvious favourites....

More Adams!
I love that Xmas cover from 239.
241 - Denny's autograph!!
244 - why is BATS still wearing pants?
And the cover to 251 epitomizes the Joker character.

If you're anything like me, when someone says BRONZE AGE, I think 1970-1977 or so but I did include some covers up into the 1980's since I believe the Bronze Age ends around the time Miller did BATMAN DKR.

Nice books!

I have most of the books with Adams interior art. Back then, I only got the ones with Adams interior art because I was unwilling to pay for just a nice cover. Now I wish I had gotten all of the Adams covers. I'm really not that much of a Batman collector as I am an Adams collector.

camper: Dude you rock! You are now my hero! LOL As I said, I'm still working on mine. I get side tracked a lot with my horror collection. I hope to have a complete run of 200 up some day. Do you also have a complete run of Detective Comics?

jae: I'm too young to actually have been able to buy these off the racks, but I remember when i started seriously collecting, all these books were in bins for a couple bucks a pop. Sure wish I would have picked them up at that time!

HA! Thanks SP/JLW.

I wish I had a complete run of DETECTIVE!
No, it's complete only from #248 up to present with a smattering of books earlier into the 50's and one book in the 40's. They are mostly high grade from around #400 to present.

As for BRAVE AND BOLD, I've got all the BATMAN team-ups with pretty much all of them being high-grade.

YEP, BATS was always my favourite.

Hey camper, was it you that wrote on the ebay boards (i believe) that you had a high grade CGC collection of Batman from around 600 up? If it was, did you buy them individually from dif sellers or did you sign up with one of those monthly grading deals?

camper49
08-10-2006, 02:02 AM
Yes, that's me.
I have a complete run of BATMAN 606 to 650 CGC-graded 9.8....with the exception of #621.
I'm still looking for that one.
I grabbed many of these books at a steal on eBay, some I've paid more for.
I've never personally sent a book in for grading.

I've recently signed up for a subscription with SMORTENSEN for a monthly BATMAN CGC-graded 9.8 book starting with #651.
Because I'm in Canada, it costs me $111 every three months (for three CGC 9.8 books plus a reading copy). It would be cheaper for you since you're in the USA.

Why do you ask? Are you interested in the same?

SatansProdigy
08-10-2006, 02:07 AM
Yeah camper, I was thinking about doing the same thing. Same dealer and everything (he's right here in california). Thinking about doing Batman and Detective. Haven't made up my mind yet and want to check out pricing on it.

camper49
08-10-2006, 05:25 AM
The only problem I see with having a "guaranteed 9.8" subscription is that this will inevitably put more of the books out on the market.
I assume SMORTENSEN will need to submit an X number of books to CGC to guarantee getting a 9.8 for every subscription he fills.

Ah well, if I was in it for the money, I wouldn't be buying Modern Age comics to begin with!

Hey SP!
I was mistaken about my Batman 101.
My copy isn't a remainder issue, it's my Batman 104 that is a remainder issue.
Here are scans of both.
Notice I printed the top portion of a cover from another Batman 104 and inserted it into the bag, very noticeable in the scan but at least it looks nicer than no cover at the top.
But I'm still looking for nicer copies of both issues.

I've listed the bulk of my Bronze Age BATMAN duplicates, which are the lower grade copies of my collection, even though they are mostly all at least VF or better.
Here's the link.

SP, you've shown interest in some of them.
Since I started each book at 99 cents, you may be able to snap many of them up, if not all, at a great deal, depending on how many others are interested.
As always eBay is a crap shoot.

Also, my Disney Whitman books end today.

Where Where, did I miss them? I don't see anything your selling now. Anyway, thanks for posting all of those great covers. I am focused on completing my first big run, Daredevil who is also my favorite comic character, although, I have to admit that the early stories are kinda lame. I bought the whole run of the 1-75 series on eBay and am reading it now. I really like the way they are dealing with the old villains. Anyway, I need about 57 and then I will be working on my ASM, and X-men, which are real close, and then it's on to Batman, although I do pick up a good Batman every once in a while. I just got these.

You had this one posted before Campy, but it looks like Photobucket doesn't stay around forever. Nice tecs you've got there.

Camper49, I was not disappointed with my Rogers' Detectives. Great reads and excellent art. I will keep an eye out for this run, I am sure I am not alone.

I just bought a couple of Roger's Detectives#473,474, waiting for them to be shipped. Thought I'd check out a run that people talk about.

Any opinions on this run Detective #466-479. I heard the Joker issues are killer :)

That's terrific!!!!

Except for the lack of water and atmospheric lighting it is the cover!!

I really admire fans who do this, not so much for their vision, talent or sheer chutzpah, but I am just in awe of their ability to get good looking babes to pose with Geeks.

Kudos to you DT #rockon#

I agree! Batman in the Bronze Age was the best!

Here are scans of some of my Detective Comics from the seventies. The first two feature cover art by Neal Adams:

These next two feature cover art by the very underrated Jim Aparo:

The 70's is my favorite Tec era. There are some many amazing stories from this decade and quite literally only a handful of mediocre ones. Great talent were on these books then.

I have been casually looking for Batman #234 and #232. I have the Batman Treasury that reprints 232 and have a beat up #234 but have had trouble getting nice copies in my budget. I find both issues VG and up catch prices much higher than guide. Any thoughts on these being under valued in the guide.

I'd try pricing these out at a convention. The competition should result in friendlier prices.

Just about any hero book that's been made into a movie (Batman, Capt America, Thor, etc) is overpriced right now, I think. Most dealers raised their prices in anticipation of the movies, and then never got around to lowering them.

Well these are both keys so you cannot go by guide. I don't watch keys but 232 always seems to go for some dough in rough grades. Keep your eyes peeled and you will find it. What is your price range?

up to $75 for 232 but about $40 for 234 is my range. I just missed on a #234 recently, the guy beat me in the last second on ebay, the jerk.

I think you shouldn't have a problem finding a 232 in VG for that price. Somone on the Bat boards scored one in Fine for that price at a convention. I don't really follow 234 so I am not too sure about that one.

Just about any hero book that's been made into a movie (Batman, Capt America, Thor, etc) is overpriced right now, I think. Most dealers raised their prices in anticipation of the movies, and then never got around to lowering them.

The reason is that the dealers are the speculators. They convince themselves the book will be hot because of a movie. They go out and buy up any key books they can. Sometimes they pay another dealer's full price or close to it. They have to jack up the price to make their profit margin. By them overpaying to get the books, they've already increased the demand and price for the book. The dealers that had the book aren't going to price it less because they've got evidence it will sell. The dealers that bought it aren't going to price it less because it's a cool book and they don't want to break even on their investment or take a loss.

A movie does not make a comic worth more. The belief that a movie makes the comic worth more is what makes the price go up. A self-fulfilling prophesy.
