View Full Version : An urgent message for all Comics Corral members

This is a very difficult post for me to write, but it is important that you are all aware that one of our fellow community members is in an emergency situation at this moment.

Chaosus, or Gary, was hospitalized last Wednesday with some breathing difficulties. They decided to do a lung biopsy to determine the cause and to see what treatments they could begin.

He is currently in Intensive Care because they had to perform a tracheotomy on him and he is currently on a breathing machine.

As of today, there has been no improvement in his condition and the options they have now are few. They are giving him some more time to try and beat the virus/infection in his lungs, but that is pretty much all that they can do.

Gary is in a dire condition and really could use your strongest prayers and wishes.

When Gary's wife asked him what he needs a few days ago he managed to jot down a few of our names and the Comics Corral. It really touched me that in the midst of his struggle he managed to think about all of us here.

Due to Gary's wishes, we have kept this from you for a while, but his wife stated that he mentioned some other folks besides the Corral staff so it would be better if we let you all know.

Please give your thoughts and prayers to Gary and his family in this time of desperate need.

Hoss

Wow.

No words other than I will light a candle for him. I haven't been around as long as some, but this place has a place in my heart, too.

Get better, Gary.

We all need to pull together for Gary.

Every positive thought and prayer is meaningful.

Gary, you rock. Always.

I just want to reinforce what Hoss said regarding Gary's message to his wife.

I talked to Claudia yesterday too, and she said (and laughed when she said) that one of the first times he came to after heavy sedation, he asked for a clipboard with paper and asked that Claudia contact us here at the Corral.

Hoss and Habib and I knew he was in trouble, but until the last four days, didn't know or expect that it would take such a turn for the worse.

I can't tell you how sad I am right now, and yet how proud I am to have met such a good friend on such a tenuous platform as a comic discussion board.

Being pretty much an eternal optimist when it comes to such things, I expect that Gary will be back soon to give Hoss, Habib and I flak for making a "big deal" out of this.

But after talking to Claudia, the realist in me says that Gary needs as many prayers and positive thoughts as we can muster in order for him to make his way back to us.

As Hoss says, he really does need a miracle.

Let's all do whatever we can, whatever is appropriate to our individual beliefs, to make that happen.

I know how close I was just a few months ago to finding out if my atheism was justified (via those brutal bronchial spasms and infection), and this sounds like it's about ten times worse. Life is really shitty sometimes.

Make it through this, Gary. Make it through.

Just got back, and I'm so sorry to hear such bad news. I for one do believe in miracles, and I'll be praying for you Gary. Get back here soon.

Hi all.

I know Gary from the eBay Comics Discussion Board. In fact, Gary was one of the people who helped get that board started. When I saw Hoss's post about this on the eBay board it really hit me hard.

I can't say that I know Gary well personally, but I know of his love of comics and music. And I know that even in the most heated discussions Gary always kept his cool, and was fair and considerate. He's one of the good ones for sure. I love bantering with Gary; he's witty, intelligent, thoughtful . . . well, I could go on, but you get the idea.

All my thoughts and best wishes to Gary, his wife and loved ones.

You can get through this, man. I know you can.

Hey everyone. I received a message today from Gary's wife.

"Last night they transferred Gary out of ICU . It's a very bad infection in his lungs, and its going to take time for him to recover. Hopefully by the end of the week the tracheotomy will be taken out. I cannot thank everyone enough for your support and prayers for Gary. Warm regards to everyone at the Corral."

It's some great news! Get well soon Gary!

Awesome!
Hey, we should all send Gary a little something to cheer him up, such as a comic book or two in his favourite genre.
What do you all think of that?
Maybe we can send them to HOSS or CG or SP or HABIB for delivery to Gary?

fulltimer56

That's a great idea, camper!!

Does anyone know what he likes?

Hoss, CG, habib, etc etc?

Just let me know what he likes and I'll see what I have. BTW could we also send him a get well cards or anything like that?

That is good news!

Baby steps, but in the right direction. Getting out of ICU is a good sign.

Go, Gary, go!

Linda, I know Gary is an Avengers guy (among other things) and has an impressive SA collection of same as I recall, but it's hard to say what he might want.

Hey Gang! Hank & Stacey here. Sorry to be gone so long, but as soon as we read about Gary's condition we had to say how sorry we were to hear what was going on with him and Claudia. We're glad to hear that he seems to be doing a bit better.

We're not the praying kind, but EVERY SINGLE GOOD THOUGHT we have is going out to you guys.

From one drummer to another musician, hang in there baby, you can BEAT this!

And from two comic collectors to another, by Odin's bristling beard, thou art going to be back on the corral on the morrow - we just know it!

Nuff Said!

Take care Gary and Claudia

I talked with Gary on the phone today and he is out of the hospital!!

He is now in a recovery center to get strength back from being laid up for these last 6 weeks or so.

Hopefully it will be in the very near future that Gary will be back here with us giving us his own account of this terrible ordeal.

Gary.....take care my friend.....and keep fighting 'til you are 100% again!

Great to hear about Gary's progress!!!

A long stay in the hospital takes a lot out of a person, but it sounds like Gary is well on his way to a full recovery.

Good news, indeed!!

Hi Guys and Gals!

I'm at home now. While I'm not 100% back to normal, I'm alive and getting better every day.

I won't be able to post very much for a few weeks. I'm doing in home physical therapy to learn to walk again. My computer is on the second floor of the house and I need help doing stairs. The good news is that I'm getting a laptop with a wireless network card so I will be able to post with it in the next week or so.

I've read all of these posts and I want to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers, they really did help.

I miss you guys and I can't wait to get back to posting on a regular basis.

Glad you're back kinda on your feet and still amongst the living. Did they ever determine what in the world it was that knocked you on your butt?

(oh yeah, and be careful with those laptops! They can get really hot in your lap! Now that you're getting better, you don't want to get any burns,...especially down there!)

Hi Gary,

I also have a laptop and jay ain't kidding when he said they can get HOT on your lap. I have a lapdesk (piece of wood) that seats on the arms of my favorite chair in the living room that I put mine on. It's very nice!!

YAY!! So glad you're home at last, Gary. What an ordeal that must have been.

Keep us updated on your progress as best you can. I poke my nose in here and the eBay board now and then (perhaps not as much as I should--mostly a lurker now. So little time, it seems), So I hope to hear that you are running up and down those stairs like a 3 year old soon! :-D

Good to hear from you, Gary.

Take care,

Hey Everybody,

I got my laptop up and running.

It feels SOOOO Good to be back.

I just want to thank all of you for your thoughts and well wishes. They really did help me quite a bit.

Now I just have to work on getting my strength back. It's a very slow process.

I am going to be spending my time scanning comics so I can start selling them on E-Bay again. I gotta do something to offset the medical bills. I will make posts here FIRST in the event any of my fellow Corralites need something for their collections.

Oh, the illness that tried to kill me was called "PCP Pneumonia" from what I understand this is a rare type of pneumonia that only people with compromised immune systems get. Since I was undergoing radiation therapy to treat Prostate Cancer and Bone Disease my immune system was kaput!

Leave it to me to get the "Rare, Limited Version" of pneumonia.

Now let me go see if I can get involved with some comic book discussions!

Gary
