Is it just me or have most of the printing error Double Covers occurred during the Bronze Age?

Yeah, the few double covers I had where from that time period. I have never seen any from more modern issues.

All my double cover books are from the Bronze Age and are all BATMAN books.

I'm wondering how much of a premium a double cover is worth? If both covers were nice, I would think it's worth more. But what if you have an outer cover that's beat up but the inner one is nice. If you were to submit it to a third-party grading company, would it be better to remove the outer one to get a better grade? Or do they grade by the better cover?

That's a good question.
I once saw a CGC-graded Conan #375 (last issue) with a double INTERIOR and a single cover on eBay about a year or two ago.
Both interiors were of the same condition.
The CGC label made mention of double interiors but that's it.

My understanding is that CGC will grade the inside cover, but I forget where I read that.

I own several double cover issues, but I don't think I've ever seen one from Marvel. It seems all of mine are DC issues, maybe that's what DC stands for, DOUBLE COVERS?
Seriously though, it does keep the inner cover nice and near-minty fresh!

One of the covers I used in the "guess the grade" game was like this.
I used the lower outer cover grade as the answer since that is what everyone based their guess on. (hard to see that inner cover in the slab #creep# )

a while back (late 80's) a bought a nearly compete run of the Ghost Rider series for about .25 each.
Nearly each issue was a double cover.
I've also had a couple of Captain America's and an Uncanny X-Men, all from the late 70's with them.
Comic covers got more glossy (less stickY?) starting in the early 80's, so I imagine the printer had few errors of that sort.

I don't know a foolproof way, but here are some thoughts. First, if there has been hanky panky, the book has been restapled. CGC sometimes notes this when they see it, so there must be people who are good at spotting it. Second, all 6 covers would presumably be cut the same way. I have dupes of older comics, and there are usually differences. Try measuring from some fixed points to the edge and see if they are the same for all six.

That makes no sense, it's gotta be a mistake. The CGC grade of a multi-cover book is always whatever cover grades the highest.

No,it makes sense. There is a defect within the book that knocks it down to an 8.5
It could have a few pages ripped,or a coupon written on,ect, ect. All things being equal, the grade is usually the same as the highest cover, but not always.
If it were a single cover book,if the cover were a 9.6,but several pages were ripped, the book would get a lower grade. Same thing here, only they are giving you the covers grades.

BlowUpTheMoon

Actually, CGC knocked that book down to 8.5 because of the 'off tan to white' pages. No book with that page quality can have a grade higher than 8.5 according to CGC.
So yes, you are right - there is a 'problem' within the book; the whiteness of the pages.

I would have thought it would have been a flaw at worst and a non event at best and would be worth whatever the same comic in that condition that had a single cover
For the life of me I cannot see ppl forking out more just because it has 2 covers.
It sounds a little like the early 90's when one comic was printed with 5 different covers like x force and we all know what those are worth

Different strokes for different folks. Charlton's never interested me, but obviously CG adores them. Silver Surfer never interested me, but I am trying to complete a run of Thing in CGC 9.8.
As far as paying too much for double covers, you don't want to know what I paid for this raw, just because it's probably one of a kind.

Certainly! Just look at what folks shell out for "limited" Retailer Incentive copies. Whereas, a double cover is (for the most part) a true printing anomaly and therefore inherently "limited" in it's own right!
During a regular full-run issue printing how many multiple cover/ error issues actually make it off the presses, let alone out the door? Understanding of course, that publishers must have certain Q.C. procedures in place, towards maintaining overall quality and production volumes.
1/10 of 1%, more likely less? Then, of those how many are actually presentable as "collectibles" and not ruined/ purposely destroyed in the process? That would be an interesting statistic to learn.

Well, I don't see how it could be a flaw, since you could just take the second cover off if you wanted. The outer cover of course protects the inner cover, so that makes them more desirable (worth more) right there.
It sounds a little like the early 90's when one comic was printed with 5 different covers like x force and we all know what those are worth
Gotta disagree there, double covers are nothing like X-Force #1s. I agree with the others, double (triple, etc) covers are true oddities and not a manufactured collectible. Plus it's just cool to open a comic and see another cover!

Nope, not bagged -- this one, like 95% of the others were simply loose in a $1 box w/ 1000's of others. :p
I was shocked to find it myself, just out there for all to see (well, nestled amongst thousands of others in what was maybe 12-15 longboxes). Honestly, the bargain items were a hugely random lot: 1970's and newer (mostly '90s drek), all genres, even squarebound/prestige-style books! The older items were naturally, pretty ratty - including this one. I walked out spending maybe $8-$10, got lots of swell "3 for $1" books!
If I had more room in my luggage that week I would've nabbed more. :?

I've got lots of double covers mostly from gold to silver in our collection, still looking for a triple or higher..love that western six cover! This isn't mine but someone asked about 4 covers.

Now here is a question for the board ....
Because of modern day sencers and the way things are made today would you say these double cover books are *RARE* ??
I know in the early 40's & 50's & 60's & some 70's - 80's books came out alot in double covers as I've watched the market for some modern books which have never shown up or are very-very hard to find.
Has anyone ever gotten a key issue in double cover ??

I've seen key issues in other places but I can't remember which ones, I was just suprised when i did see them. In just my opinion they are of course harder to find and therefore more valuable... (scarce/rare/whatever). So long as they haven't been tampered with.
I think one was a Conan #1 if I remember correctly.

I've always held on to the double cover that I wanted to keep and sold the rest in collections that I've purchased .. But a question the wife asked me the other morning got me to thinking and searching for answers.
How really rare are double covers ?? So now the search is on ...:D

Just wondering. Back in tha late eighties, I bought an Alpha Flight #92, the interior has the Wolverine issue from that month. How rare is that? I know it is odd but, are there collectors interested in something like that?

I know there's a Green Lantern CGC 9.0 Double cover out there.
And of course the Hulk 340 CGC 9.8 five cover.
I could be wrong, but was one of the Pacific Coast X-men 1 a double cover that someone removed the outer cover?

Yes, same book.
I expected a 9.4/9.4 and I am happy with that. One of seven books in this grade, none higher.

this January from Metroplolis thru their comicconnection site. Upwards of 1,000 multiple cover books will be auctioned off.
Should be very interesting to see how the market values most of them.

I have a few double covers. The oldest is an All-American from the mid 40's. I also have a triple cover Conan 130. I've seen a few newer books with double covers on ebay but I don't know what they go for. I don't think there is any definitive formula for figuring the value. I don't pay extra and got mine by accident.

I have seen them all way from Golden Age to modern.
Seems 4,5, and yes 6 covers only come from Golden or Silver from poor printing practices. I very rarily see a triple cover from bronze and above. Although I do know of 3 of them.
I found my first one by sheer luck last year. Buying multiple copies of unused store stock one of them was a double cover. Not bad for $1.00

I just got my first double cover. It was really strange when I first opened it to count the pages. Whoa. Only paid a buck for mine too! I don't seriously think I will ever go after one.

Right now I don't have enough funds or knowledge to seek out the original series. I do have one of the parades but it is a warehouse find. I am currently collecting the entire 80's series and will probably end up with dups. I am happy that one of the dups is 9 so I don't have to read the double cover. If you are interested in any of the other issues let me know else I will probably end up listing them on ebay in a month or so. I am waiting to collect the entire series and decide which ones I am keeping.

Wow that was cheap. I watch the older Katy issues on ebay every once in awhile and they go for more than that. There was a file copy annual that I fell in love with and should have bid on it. It went for around 30 dollars and it was a beautiful copy. I have seen that issue at a conv for 100 and not as nice.
Here's the Katy Keene double cover. The copy is just beautful with a small corner crunch on the lower left side.

Just picked up a double cover a few days ago.....BUT the second cover is actually in the center of the comic.....never seen that before!
The comic is a Four Color #177 Roy Rogers.....I'll try to fire up the camera in a few days for a pic!

Funny this sthread justgot bumped. I just came here looking for it. Been on a bagging & rebagging spree of late, and often open books to take a peek. Noticed last night that my Ghosts #35, which I thought was a solid VF+ to VF/NM copy actually has a double sover, and the inside cover is a solid NM. Sweeet. I'll probably liquidate at some point (when selling horror & oddities lots), as I'm not a double cover collector. Either way, a nice find. Makes me happy. Will make somebody else happy,as well.

That's a sweet Katy Keene there. Aren't those 65¢ cover Archies relatively scarce?
I wouldn't be surprised if you could sell it for over $20 on eBay.
(Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if it fetched only $7, if started low.)

I don't think the .65¢ covers are rare. I just looked at GCD and they have a .75¢ one which is probably the rare edition- http://www.comics.org/issue/238742/cover/4/
After I found this, three other KK double covers have turned up on ebay. They don't demand a premium. Fans that collect these could care less about a double cover. I am not that type of collect either but I'm still going to keep it.

Ah but there are other collectors (like me) who normally would never touch a KK who would buy this for the double cover.
