I used to collect comics in the early to mid 70's and in the wake of the outpouring of new superhero films, I have found a renewed interest in my collection. Anyway, I have an Iron Man #1 (the 12 cent one) comic that is missing a portion of its front cover. For someone unknown reason, the previous owner of the book cut out the entire The Invincible Iron Man portion of the cover. I don't recall hearing about restoration when I was collecting and I don't know much about it now. My question is there any way the cover could be restored, how is it done, and would it be worth it for this book? Thanks for your help...

If the logo is gone, it's likely that the book was "stripped", at least I think that's what it's called. It's when the newsstand or book store would rip the cover or the title off of a paperback or comic or magazine and return them to the distributor for credit. The book was then supposed to be disposed of...I don't think they do it anymore.

Jay is right about store owners doing that to wayyy too many great comics. Unfortunatley that leaves you with a comic book grade of .5 which is the poorest grade there is. You can get someone to restore the cover for you (re-create) but then it would be expensive and then the book would definately be considered restored and you would not really be able to make your money back (if you were planning on selling it). If it were 20 or 30 years older and was a key issue it might be worth doing but for an Iron Man #1 there are too many of those floating around for it to be as desireable. Don't get me wrong you have a great comic there but so do a lot of other's..myself included. That being said it IS Iron Man #1 and i'd be willing to bet you could maybe get a few bucks for it as is. Check out these site's for restoration info.

You could buy a better copy of Iron Man # 1 for the price it would cost to do any restoration.

Thanks to all ... your info and disneyteddies links were of great help. I think I'll sell the book for whatever I can get for it and buy and new copy!
