If you haven't heard the brouhaha over All-Star Batman & Robin #10, here's the short version.

Frank Miller wanted actual curse words lettered into the book and then blacked out with black bars. In the proofing stage, everything looked fine. After printing them, they discovered the black bars weren't black enough and you could read the filthy words underneath. DC has asked retailers to pulp the issue, although some retailers spell pulp as E-B-A-Y.

And here's scans of the pages plus the actual text. Warning this page may be considered offensive.

Let's see. We've had the GD Batman, crotch shots of Vicki Vale, a suggestion that Dick Grayson eat rats in the batcave hours after his parent's were murdered, S&M Black Canary, ball buster Wonder Woman, Bats and Black Canary getting their freak on on a pier, a very sadistic date rape drug murder by the Joker. Who knows what I forgot since the book comes out once every 3 years.

Buddy, this is tame by comparison.

I missed that part. Oh yeah, retailers are seeing gold.

Also, I don't mean to start a religious debate, but how is GD okay but not the c-word or some of those other beauties from the link?

I have to admit, this book is my guilty pleasure read. I just feel that I have to hide it if my wife looks over my shoulder as I'm reading it.

Maybe I'm just not fully on board with the speculative aspects of the hobb, I'm just a collector, not a dealer or "investor". I can't imagine any scenario that would get me to pay a premium for a Batman book just so I could see "GD" in print. But it reminds me of an E-bay auction from a few years back, where a GA book that has nudity (not on Tcover) was offered as a great rarity. the funny part is that it was a CGC copy. So let's think about this, someone thinks I should pay extra fro a book because it has nudity, BUT I CAN'T SEE THE NUDITY BECAUSE IT'S CGC! this stuff makes no sense to me.

I'm with you brother. I'll find a way to read #10 because I've read 1-9, but I'm not paying more than the already inflated 2.99 or 3.50 or whatever that book costs.

I'd bet most of the speculation on e-Bay is coming not from people who want to own the comic to read but who are counting on it becoming a "RARE-HOT-COLLECTOR'S ITEM" to flip.

eBay has a ban on recalled products, so I wonder if they'll be pulling any of these auctions.

Most definitely. It's Captain America #25 all over. I still don't have an original printing of Cappy 25 by the way, but I have a nice consolation prize. 2 weeks after it came out, Steve Epting was signing books at an LCS so I bought a second (or third or fourth) printing and had him sign it.

Did this book come out? If so, I missed it since it wasn't in my pull box.

Holy Moley! This auction is run by my LCS.

Guess that explains why it's not in your pull box.

Gee whiz, if I had and sold it at that price....I could have bought me 2 tank full of gas and a candy bar.

What a jerk. The place I order my comics from said if they had recieved them, they would have sent them out to folks that ordered them.

I'd tell that LCS to shove it if they treated me like that.

I'm on the fence, secrets. There's the part of me that agrees with you, yet there's the part of me that knows I intentionally wait for the LCS to invariably throw recent books into the 50 cent box so I can grab them. I guess I can't get to upset when the LCS guy can make a quick killing from idiots, I mean shrewd speculators.

Ahh...the speculators amuse me.

The same people that wouldn't pay a premium for a Preacher or Kick Ass book are all over this just because there's a print error.

Dolts.

I hope they all get stuck with them.

I remember the nude Elektra and the nude Spider-man Reign....although I had 'em for 25% off cover. Now, they can be found in the $1 boxes.

Nude Elektra? Vicki Vale crotch shots?

Almost makes me want to start collecting superhero books again.

Yes, and a nude Conan to boot. Not him but the woman on the cover is.

I saw the scans.

I don't know. Sounds like a typical issue of The Boys to me.

LOL! You beat me to it - I was going to say, if you want a book that repeatedly has See U Next Tuesday in it, just buy The Boys!

Yes, The Boys has 'em. It's a fine piece of adult reading.

I think it's kind of sad that Frank Miller takes months and sometimes years to pump out drivel like ASB&R.

pasnat54

In The Boys, (great book, by the way) the profanity is an integral part of telling you about the characters. The casual way they toss offending words helps you place them in context, and maybe they remind you of someone you know.

But in ASB, it seems like a cheap, unnecessary stunt. Kind of like how some comedians get laughs simply by saying the F-word in front of an audience. Nothing humorous or clever about it, all shock value.

Miller seemed to value his own pretentious artistic expression over consideration for his audience, which may include kids lured by The Dark Knight movie.

I can hear Frank Miller laughing as he talks about it in this article...

http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?artid=v3BNfuRhtt4=&Title=Batman

He says:

“I have no idea how this awful thing happened. It is just one of those terrible and glorious things that happen time to time in publishing.”

"...And my first reaction is simple: I want at least three copies.”

I don't see any regret or remorse. There is a simple solution to the problem... quit hiring him for comics.

I stopped reading ASB&R after the first issue. The writing was horrible beyond belief.
