We have a thread for horror but not for other genres. So here it is! I'd love to see some GA superhero books. I don't have any but here's one to start off the thread. A Goofy Comics #5. My copy seems to have only one staple....is this normal?

My copy seems to have only one staple....is this normal?
My understanding is that during the later war years, comics had a single staple to conserve metal used in the war effort.
As far as Golden Age superhero comics, I never really got into them. They were too expensive for me, a poor college student, when I first started collecting. And the stories and art weren't to my liking. I did get some from a friend's relative, but I sold those long ago.
I have a few Golden Age comics laying around. When I get the chance I'll post some.

Four Color #16 (Mickey Mouse #1) 1941
My oldest comic book. And something I couldn't afford at the time but bought it anyway. I found it in a flea market back in 1978. I could sense the seller really wanted to sell it, but didn't want to sell it too cheaply. After haggling with him for a while, we both agreed on a price less than one half guide. Racket Squad in Action #12
Here's one of the few crime comics I have. I had given away most of my crime comics years ago to a friend. Comics like Crime and Punishment and Justice Traps the Guilty. But I kept this one. I always like the strange way Ditko illustrated things. This is his classic explosion cover. It's surreal; the shredded clothing, the shattered glass, the strange ball of fire. Nobody does an explosion like Ditko. I actually have two copies but the other one is rough shape. It's not like I need a reading copy, the stories are pretty bad. I only liked it for the cover. I guess it's the hoarder in me that compels me to buy multiple copies of the same comic.

Mask #1
A classic cover by the imcomparable cover artist, L.B. Cole.
I searched for a copy for several years before finding one at a small convention about 12 years ago. For a comic that had a print run of over a million, it's not easy to find. Even with the Internet and eBay how often do you see one for sale? Anyway, I traded ten NM sets of Wolverine 1-4 (1982 limited series) for this one. I may have ended up with the short end of the deal dollar-wise, but I wanted it, even though it was low-grade. I would love to upgrade this copy.

The Mask of Dr. Fu Manchu (Avon)
Though Wally Wood is more well-known for his EC work, he did some great stuff for other companies. Here's one of my favorite, The Mask of Dr. Fu Manchu. This book features a cover and artwork by Wood. I wanted it so badly that I ended up trading much of my Uncle Scrooge collection for it. This included #10, 13, 15-18, 20-25; ranging from VG-VF. I figured it was easier to replace the U.S. comics than to find another nice copy of the Wood classic.

Yeah, it's one of the best copies I've seen. The dealer I bought it from back in 1978 called it a mint (and I paid well over guide for it). But I would say about a 9.4. I don't plan to send it to CGC since I'm not going to sell it. I don't like the idea of it being encased. It looks good in mylar.
Back in 1978 I was in a small comic shop talking to the dealer when a guy in a motorcycle rode up and came into the shop wanting to return it. the dealer refunded the guy's money and I jumped at the chance to get it even though it cost me considerably more than what it sold for previously. Up to that point, that was the most by far I ever spent on a comic. Well-worthed every cent. Comics of this caliber don't show up often.
I will show a scan of the back cover when I get a chance. It really is a beautiful book.

Here's a couple of more Dells from the 50's. While these have photo covers, I'm more interested in the interior art. These feature art by John Buscema. He's more well-known for his Marvel work: Silver Surfer, Conan, Avengers, etc. But I think his work in the 50's is fantastic. To me, it's like fine art as opposed to pop art.

Here's a comic with a couple of 3-page stories by Frazetta. This is a case for not entombing your comic, you wouldn't be able to enjoy the contents. The tendency with the advent of third-party grading company is to place more emphasis on the covers.

I just want to say a few things about the golden age. I have always been into comics strictly for reading purposes, but kept buying multiple copies to trade and sell later so I could get more. Gold age books are not really for reading (in my opinion) because it's hard (to near impossible unless you are a bizillionaire) to complete a run and who wants to mess with such a fragile, old and expensive book. To me, GA books are collectors items and a whole different realm for me.
I'm starting to get into the golden age and am trying to force myself to stop buying silver, bronze and copper (is copper really an age?) except for the ones I am making runs on like AMS DD and TOS.
I just bought my first GA book
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=001&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=110044467753&rd=1&rd=1
and it is now in my safe deposit box or I would post a scan of it. The seller is super friendly and we email back and forth now. He is really into GA books and is teaching me a lot. The GA book I bought is slabbed so I cannot read it or even touch it, but holding it, even encased in plastic is soooo freaking cool. It's like holding a piece of history. Mine is the highest universally graded and it is the 31st app. of the Green Lantern. After looking at the major GA books I've fallen in love with those Schomburg covers and decided to collect All Select. I feel funny about collecting a book based on the cover, but.... They look so cool.
I've bought the second Gerber volume, the first is too pricey right now and will be buying the GA Marvel Milestones to read these gems. I own a Hulk 181 of whlich there are over 3500 on CGC and you can still pay $450 for a 6.5, I paid $450 for a book that has 6 on CGC and is what 30 years the elder of that hulk? OK I'm done. Sorry I went on a rant there, I'm just excited about this new area for me.
By the way, I live in Santa Fe, NM and I have never been to a convention, I don't see too many Golden age books in my area unless they are on eBay, no flea market wonder buys for me.

By the way, I loved all of your covers, thanks for posting them.
Wow how Wonder Woman has changed. I love seeing the changes in the characters. I just bought a TOS #52, first app. of the Black Widow and I'm reading the DD 1-75 series with her in it. Holding two issues next to each other it's amazing how much her character has changed as well.

Looks like Rulah isn't the ONLY Goddess in the jungle! And they both probably shop at the same the same jungle Bloomingdales.
It always amuses me to see a steady stream of Caucasian Jungle Goddesses as a recurrent theme in the jungle comics genre of all these Golden age publications.
It's a comforting thought that Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie could successfully survive, thrive, come to rule all jungle beasts and denizens of the deepest, darkest bush, and look damn good doing it, if they were forcibly airlifted into the wilds of untamed Africa. :D

I love everyone's scan's...so many great books! The Wonder Woman books have great art and color..I don't know HOW Archie and Jughead became so popular being so ugly back then, I guess Betty and Veronica carried them for the first decade or so LoL. That other Batman one is really nice eye candy! And the mystery and jungle books, most of those I've never seen before but they are great too! I LOVE GA books!

Those books are such fun. You will enjoy collecting them. Back when I owned a comic book store, a guy once brought in a collection of long runs of the Lev Gleason Crime books. We had a field day reading them.

Thanks CG! It has a 3/16" square piece missing out of the back cover and about a 1/8" spine split at the bottom in addition to a few other very minor defects. It's really glossy (I cracked it out) and the colors are fantastic. It looks like a higher grade book in hand.
