Here's a Fireside book published by Simon and Shuster, Origins of Marvel Comics. This came out in 1974 and reprinted the origins of the Fantastic Four, Spider-man, Hulk, and Thor, plus another story of each of those characters.

You guys use tape on Mylar? One of the reason I use mylars it is so I don't have to use any tape. There's no flaps to tape down, and the top is unsealed so the comic can off-gas. Even with the Mylites I just tuck the flap in, behind the backing board. Tape is our worst enemy!

I avoid using tape, especially on mylar. Like you say, there's no reason to use tape on mylar. Tape is an accident waiting to happen. Whenever I get a comic with tape on the bag, if I remove the comic I remove the tape from the bag first.

I use 1 and 2 mil mylites with tape, but then, I read a book and it goes into my collection for years at a time without being read again. But if I do want to pop it out and read, I just take the tape off first.

Here's one of the most significant comic in my collection. Not that it's very valuable. Or such a great comic (although I like the Kubert art). This is the first back issue comic I ever bought. For a quarter. This is the comic that launched me headlong into 30 year on-and-off-and-on-again love affair with comics. Sorta like what Scrooge McDuck's lucky dime is to him. Woe is me should I ever lose it.

Here's one of my prized comics. I got this from Bob Sidebottom in 1976. I asked if he had any House of Secrets 92 and he pulled out a stack of ten. They weren't in exactly the highest grade but he said I could have any one for $3.00. Swamp Thing had just come out and was hot. This is the one I pick out from the stack.

Great covers, SP and Jae. I liked that Shadow #1 cover. The Spidey/Gwen books has been on my want list for a while as I'm in the process of getting the #100 - #200 run on Amazing Spiderman. I have very few issues in that run so far. Thanks to SP for the fill in issues from #200-#300, most of it is almost complete.

The first six Star Wars comics was an adaptation of the first Star Wars movie. Starting with #7, it was all-new stories. #39-44 was an adaptation of the second movie, Return of the Jedi with great art by Al Williamson. After #50, I lost interest and gave up on the series. Kinda wish I 'd stuck with it to the end. The last few issues are scarce and bring good money.

SP, I really like that Boris Vallejo painting cover of the Frankenstein monster on that Psycho magazine. That's something I would love in my collection.

Savage Tales #1

This is fairly scarce. I think it had to do with the "M" rating (for the mature reader!). The cover is pretty gruesome with the decapitation scene. Of particular interest to me is that it contains the first appearance and origin of the Man-Thing.

When I get a chance, I'll post Giant-Size Man-Thing #4 and #5 (I can see the Giant-Size Man-Thing jokes coming). Those have wonderful Howard, the Duck stories with very nice art by Frank Brunner, the only artist I feel who did justice to the character.

Here's another Skywald magazine. Some day i hope to upgrade this copy. These mags sure had some crazy stories! The black and white really made you feel part of it! I wouldn't want to see these reprinted in color. Wonder if there is any plans on reprinting these stories?

I had such a hard time getting rid of my Wolverine mini. I think I sold #1 for $12 CDn and the rest for $5 CDN each. Average grade was NM-. Despite the bargain basement price I made great profit since I had purchased them all off the shelf.

I did better than buying off the shelf. I bought 50 sets back then (shameless speculator). It only cost me 45 cents for each comic. Over the years I traded or gave them away. I still have a dozen sets. They're all unread, most of them would grade 9.4 or better as you can see from the scans. This is typical of the sets I have, as I did not select the set I scanned but randomly grabbed the first set. I'm sure I have better. They have great color and gloss, sharp corners, little or no spine creases, none color-breaking, with nice page quality, OW-W or better. They look as fresh as the day I bought them. and I took care of them all these years. These are really beautiful books. I have absolutely no qualms about calling them NM.

Ow! I cannot fathom having that many sets. It took forever to sell the one I had I would probably kill myself if I had fifty of this mediocre series.... especially since it VERY common around here.

I agree with you in that these comics are very common. When they first came out, everybody and their brothers were buying multiple copies. But they are very popular with collectors. Although these comics are priced too high in the guide, I see on eBay that sets sell for $50 to $75 and the #1 sells for over $20 regularly. Perhaps locally where you are, it's tough to sell, but on eBay they sell very well. I took twenty sets with me to a local convention about ten years ago and dealers were swarming all over me. I got rid of them in a matter of minutes. It's like Amazing Spider-man #300, it's very common and there are many dealers and collectors holding multiple copies, even cases; yet it sells for a premium simply because the demand is there. As common as the Wolverine comics are, there are very many collectors who don't have them and want them. I'm not worried about selling them.

Just because they are common doesn't mean they're necessarily mediocre, at least, not to me. I enjoy reading the story every so often. Of course, I have the TPB. This story was done by Miller after his first stint on Daredevil, he was just starting to hit his stride as a creator. IMHO, this is one of Miller's better effort artwise and storywise.

Jael.....those sets still sell at conventions!

I bought out a store around 3 years ago that had 150-200 of each issue of the Wolverine mini. The #1's - 3's were all VF to NM+. The 4's were in a box that was water damaged so they were all G to VG. Every convention that I take sets they sell for $50.

People still want this series!

And no Ox...I am not going to kill myself for having this many sets of the Wolverine LS.......but maybe for the 300+ Daredevil #181's I got in the same deal. #explode#

I don't know why you would tie my comments on common to being a definition of mediocre. I like Miller but this series (and Wolverine in general) was only mediocre.

BTW I did try and dump the Wolverine series on eBay. No takers there either probably because I was selling them individually.

Anyway. I sure am glad I was just a kid then and not someone thinking "investment".

This is the first comic I bought multiples of. The LCS must have over-speculated on this issue and sold them for 10 cents each. Being a bargain hunter and not knowing any better as a newbie, I bought five of them.

Nice run, camper! I have most of them but I only really went after the keys, #100 and #112; and the Silver Surfer appearances. I'm not what you call a completist. Most of my collecting efforts during the Bronze Age was devoted to X-Men. It was only after Byrne started doing the FF on a regular basis did I start buying them off the shelves.
