Hey guys, check it out at

www.comicsbid.com (http://www.comicsbid.com).

Tell everyone about it!

Since I ended up having to work today, I have not been able to open the support forums as scheduled, but I'll pull an all nighter tomorrow night after work and get those up and running. In the meanwhile, feel free to register your account and get a feel for the site!

The listing process is very simple so give it a whirl if you want! :D

I don't have the greatest advertising budget, so the best we can do now is word of mouth! Get the word out about our great new auction site!

It's ready to go now...the only major thing lacking is the bulk lister and Google Checkout integration. Those items are still forthcoming!

Right now payment options for sellers are Paypal, check or moneyorder! I'll add support for other gateways as needed!

Very Nice! Congrats on having the initiative to set that up and good luck with the bids. I placed a couple of bids so the wheels of commerce are turning

How are "Copper" age comics defined? 1/1/1980 to 12/31/1989 maybe?

How are our fees collected?

The Charlton Guy
12-27-2008, 03:13 PM
Hoss can correct me if I am wrong or if he has changed the approach on this, but I believe that an invoice for Seller fees will be sent out monthly based on the final value fees, Shop subscriptions and auction upgrade fees and can then be payed via PayPal or Google checkout (the Google link is forthcoming). The final value fee is only 10 cents for items $3.00 and under, 6% for items $3.01 and more.

There are no listing fees for baseline auctions or "Buy-Out" items. :p

Right Hoss?

A lot of times an ISP will block emails from certain domains that they feel could be malacious for whatever reasons. They don't even go into the Spam folders they just never make it. My Road Runner account has block activation account from ComicsBid, FaceBook, BlacksandBlondes, DudeLooksLikeALady, MySpace etc. They may bounce back to the sender but I'm not sure of this. Best bet is if you don't get your activation pretty quick is to either email Hoss or set up a Google email address (thats what I did and it worked ASAP). Thanks again Hoss.

Looked like I wrote the ad upside down and while drinking and posting.

I have to admit, even though I knew that Hoss was close to launching comicsbid, I really wasn't ready...I guess I was procrastinating a little because of the Holidays. Most of the stuff I had been scanning was for a Forum Only sale thread I was going to start...but now, I think I'd rather list that stuff on comicsbid so as to help launch that site and get the revenue moving. Plus I've got quite a bit of better stuff I need to get scanned too, there is just never enough time. Man, I wish they'd hurry up and perfect human cloning, I need one!

toz,
I'm not sure what your question to Hoss was, but on some of my auctions, I put an image in the description box and some in the link-thingy below the desc. and the one in the description turned out larger than the linky-thing image did. I hope that wasn't too technical for you. :o

Like in this auction for instance:
http://www.comicsbid.com/auction_details.php?name=ARMY-OF-DARKNESS-1-Nov-1992-NM&auction_id=100288

Note that the pic in the description is full-sized, while the one below that has been reduced, however they are both the same image and were the same size. The comicsbid gallery does reduce images, but it appears you can link the image in the description at full-size.

grininbarrett
12-29-2008, 05:29 PM
When I click any of the categories, it appears the default sort is "ending latest".

Shouldn't "ending soonest" be default

From the home page when clicking "view all" from the ending soon section this especially makes no sense.

toz1960
12-29-2008, 05:52 PM
I got the link right in the description, that turned out good.It is the host picture box I am having trouble with.

The limit on pic size is 500k but most of mine are over that. Some 475 some 750 and everywhere in between.I took all the pictures the same way, some just turned out bigger.I tried croping them some more but that didn't help and I can't figure out how do make the file size smaller in my picture editor.

I can do pics in the description but I don't want to have a listing that doesn't have a pic featured on the opening page.I thopught of just printing out "PIC IN DESCRIPTION" ,but that seemed like a cop out on my part.

I may just wind up using a generic pic of Betty Page or something on some that won't take my pics#bash3#

Hey guys,

Sorry I haven't answered your questions sooner. I am going to increase the image size to 750 later today. I would suggest using Photobucket or some other image host for anything larger than that!

I will also be adding the books category for you all. I meant to do that for the opening day, but I completely forgot.

As far as the sort options, i am working on getting that fixed. I never even noticed that. I hope to have you several sorting options by the next couple of hours. In the meanwhile, you can click the little red up/down arrows at the top of each column to sort up or down.

grininbarrett
12-29-2008, 08:39 PM
Always good to have more sort options, but the default should be ending soonest, since a lot of people don't realize they can click the red arrows.

Also a quick fix: change the "Max. Bid" column in search results to "Current Bid"

Actually, that was pretty easy...seconds instead of "hours".

There is a link below each sold item for combined invoicing. But watch it: before you send it, make sure to add the shipping amount (in JBDs case, I neglected to add one at all, but that's o.k., I know he'll add like an extra gazillion dollars for shipping for little ol' me...:D ).

Nice snags by the way!

I did rush it (didn't stop and think before hitting the send button), but I didn't seem to see any messaging window with the outgoing invoice. Is there one Hoss? If not, that would be helpful if it is available.

$15.00? That sounds good! :p

JUSSSSSST kidding.

Like I said, I rushed through your first invoice like the dunderhead I am.

I sent out another combined invoice and this time I saw that there is a check-box with the shipping fee associated with each item. I think that all you have to do (when sending a combined invoice) is un-check all but one.

Needless to say, I combine shipping for all items, regardless of count (Hi Count! #hello#) at $5.00.

I think there may be a setting associated with the shipping fee that needs to be tweaked a bit but I don't know HTML from a Hotmeal so that's Hoss's gig. Or maybe I'm just a dummy.

Simply un-checking the boxes per item does the trick. And a seller can view the sent invoices with the "Invoices Sent" link on the left of the screen. Who'd a thunk it? #creep#

OK, I have read all the messages here and the whole comicsbid website and I have some dumb questions that I either couldn't find and probably missed or just wanted confirmation that I was understanding correctly...
1. If I post a comic and it doesn't reach the minimum bid, I pay nothing. Is that correct? If not, what is the fee?
2. Why is there a $5 fee to set up with PayPal? (this is not just an initial deposit, right?) Although I could be mistaken, I don't recall any fee like that when I first set up my PayPal account?
3. For those of us with ADD tendencies, it appears I can save more than one draft of listings. Is that correct?
4. It appears there is no fee for including a buy out price. Is that correct? (this is the equivalent of buy it now, in Ebay, right?)
Thanks for humoring me.

4. It appears there is no fee for including a buy out price. Is that correct? (this is the equivalent of buy it now, in Ebay, right?)
Thanks for humoring me.
-Matthew-

1. There is no fee for listing. There is a $1.00 fee for setting a reserve price auction. That's 1/2 of what eBay charges.
2. The $5.00 fee is optional. It's a seller verification charge. This allows buyers to see that you are indeed who you say you are. It's just charged one time only. Buyers can get verified as well if they choose.
3. You can save your listings as a draft as well as set many of the fields in your listing to be prefilled so you won't have to keep entering similar things over and over.
4. There is no Buy Out fee charged. Cool, huh?

Hope this helps you!

Hoss, I sent you a question did you get it?Ditto... #popcorn#

Hey there, Hoss! #cowboy#

I was about to register, but have a few inquiries:

1) Re: "Individual", or "Business"? What is the main difference(s), if any, between the 2 as far as ComicsBid might be concerned?

2) Re: Tax ID #? I actually do have a NY Tax ID# that I use for selling locally and for occasional shows etc., but never really have used it elsewhere. What are the implications (if any) by using it on ComicsBid, aside from tax exempt/ resale status for other in-state transactions I might make? Really, most purchases I make I consider for myself, not exclusively just for resale.

3) I assume that once I'm registered, I can update, or change these as needed -- yes?

Honestly, I really don't consider myself as having a "business" per se, and though I have the tax ID #, I likely do not use it to the fullest potential. Just looking for some input...

... if anyone else has thoughts re. my inquiries, please feel free to chime in ~ Thanks. ;)

No certainly not, MG. I had to get a NYS resale certificate/ tax ID# to sell at a local Antique Mall Co-Op and it's nice to use at Estate Auctions, etc. for the tax exempt/ resale status there.

I certainly do not consider myself a "business owner" and wish I did more w/ my tax ID#, but I'm not entirely sure how best to do so, which was the reason for my tax # inquiry, etc.

Honestly, I imagine that the "individual" accnt. is what I'm fixin' to open on ComicsBid and the inclusion of my tax ID# is really neither here, or there at this time... I'm just curious to know what the real deal is regarding using it. ;)

1) It's really not that big of a deal. It has to do with what is worded on your invoices as far as individual or a business name.

2) You aren't required to enter it if you don't want to. The tax stuff is all on your end anyway.

3) You can change any of the settings thru your member page.

LOL ~ yep, he's still there! :sale:

He's only open in the spring/summer though, you know, during outdoor fleamarket season. Yeah, then in the summer it's like 110^ in that glorified pole-barn!

It's funny, I remember buying my very 1st back issue from him at a show in the Lockport Mall c. 1987. It was Spectacular Spider-Man #1, perhaps in FN/VF, for a whopping $4.25 premium!

I had to use some birthday $$ to buy it and I still have it today. #cloud9#

I was there (selling in Clarence) about a month ago. Typical early morning Buffalo lake-effect snow, so little or no outdoor action.

Don was still braving the elements though. He now has a "shop" at the Flea and about a gazillion books within his sheet metal walls with just a high-powered electric heater to keep the joint warm while he's there.

He showed me a long-box of GA stuff that would knock your socks off.

He really is one of a kind Don is.

I agree with you (as to the Modern commons). I think once the Shops and bulk listings get rolling, variety of titles will increase and the prices will decrease. I know that I plan on hundreds or thousands at 99 cents or less for the Moderns. The Catch22 is that with a busy, busy schedule, it doesn't seem worthwhile to scan or photo hundreds or thousands of 99 cent listings. I prefer lots. But the Shops should give me more time to pile up books on a daily basis, even if it's just five or ten a day, they will add up quickly.

I don't think you even have to scan under $1 moderns, especially if you get down in the 50 cent range. Title, issue # and general grade range should work. I think the bulk lister will be a double edged sword. Will allow lots of stuff to go up quickly, now what that stuff is and at what price will determine the success of the site. (I remember when Yahoo Auctions went free listing...) Hopefully there will be enough realistic pricing sellers that it will balance out the chaff and the site will thrive. Time will tell.

OK, let me preface by saying thanks to Hoss...I know that there are always start up glitches and they seem fairly minimal - along with having to take care of people like me who have already forgotten their password :)

I tried putting my first listing up just now and had a couple questions/glitches.

1. I suspect this is user error on my part, but shouldn't a picture appear in the listing when I provide the URL link to the photobucket photo? Anyone know what I did wrong?
2. Is the listing of superheroes under bronze age inappropriately truncated after about "G?" There is no listing for X-Men, so I listed it under "other" within bronze age superheroes.

Thanks.

You don't run into a problem of the image being too big when you do that?

Toz,
You don't run into a problem of the image being too big when you do that?

I also copy and paste the image in the description. But I also use the URL upload too. That's the only way the photo will show up as a preview "gallery" photo in the listings. The URL upload is on the page following the auction description. As for size, you can adjust the upload size while doing a Photobucket upload. You can also easily re-size the photo within your Photobucket folder. Just use the "edit" feature and "re-size". You will have options for different screen sizes and resolutions. In fact, if the image looks too big in the auction description, you can re-size it within your Photobucket folder and it will resize in the auction description (for new viewers or if the page is refreshed).

The Charlton Guy
01-02-2009, 01:29 AM
Also, you can easily add or upload in your current auction by using the "edit your item" feature.

Toz,
Thanks, I managed to get the photo into the listing based on copying and pasting from Photobucket. (Charlton Guy, I didn't know about the edit listing option til you pointed it out; thanks).

Charlton Guy, so do I need to shrink the picture size before I upload it into comicsbid.com in order to get it to show as a gallery picture? I pasted the photobucket URL into the upload box and then clicked proceed and got a message of "ERROR: Page refresh is prohibited." I assume that is because the image is too large, right? I also tried to upload it directly from the pic saved on my computer and it said that was too large. If I do need to shrink the photo before uploading, do you know the maximum file size?

Thanks!!!!

The pics that the site hosts uses the ones in your picture folder, clicking on properties will tell you the size of a particular pic.

The max file size is 750KB.After I load the pics from my computer to photobucket I just crop the picture in my Windows picture viewer to less than 750 if it's bigger. As long as you've got all the detail in the one from photobucket you can go back and crop the original to less than 750kb and you shouldn't have any problems.

If that's clear as mud, sorry.I'm not that savy explaining computer stuff.I do know that "reboot" does not involve kicking said computer with steel toed boots to fix it#bash3#.

The Charlton Guy
01-02-2009, 02:50 AM
Right at the bottom of the Photobucket upload box is a setting for upload size with several options. I usually use a 1 meg upload or the "17 inch screen" option. There is also a similar size setting for the bulk uploader. These size settings will stay as default settings until you change them again.

Matthew_tx
01-02-2009, 03:59 AM
OK, I got the kids to sleep and I managed to shrink the image in Photobucket to get it to upload into a gallery picture.

So if this first listing of mine sells for the minimum price, I figure I will have made about 29 cents an hour - and that's not even counting the cost of the comic itself. (when the first U.S. Federal minimum wage law was passed in 1938, the minimum was 25 cents an hour, so I would have been ok doing this 71 years ago. :p) So y'all should help me out by bidding this up to $25! ;)

Let's hope I get more efficient at this as I list more comics.

(Charlton Guy, I checked my Photobucket and it was set at 17" and apparently the image was still too big to load into comicsbid.com as a gallery photo)

Hi Hoss, I think you need to add Conan to the "Bronze Age".

If I can suggest :
Under the various AGES,
you may want to list publishers instead of lesser titles.
MARVEL TITLES
DC TITLES
IMAGE TITLES
INDEPENDANT PUBLISHERS
That way you don't have tons of sublinks that are empty.
With less than 1k books that would make the site look empty.
When Rich had his site up, BOC, he had a couple of dozen titles
under each age, "appeared" the site was empty. Now if there
are 50,000 comics listed, that might be necessary. But currently
perhaps a minimalist look or KISS attribute would be more appropriate.
If we ever get a slew of comics listed, it would be more effective to
expand as needed.
Just the rambling thoughts of someone waiting on the coffee to
get done. Carry on.
