View Full Version : Wolverine 1-100, 1-4...should I buy?

I have the opportunity to buy Wolverine 1-100, the 1982 limited series 1-4, and wolverine origins #1 philly sketch signed by Michael Turner all for $100.
I haven't seen them and I don't know the condition other than that the owner told me they are all "fine to near mint." I have read enough Wolverine for me and I am not interested in them for my collection, but I am thinking of buying them to re-sell. I am considering going to look at them and if 1-10 and the limited series 1-4 are mostly nm, I might buy them all to resell. If not, then I am thinking I will probably let them go.
Any advice on the resale-ability of these comics? General feedback/ suggestions on this situation? Thanks.

You should be able to flip pretty easily. Especially with the new movie coming out soon.

OK Dannyboi, I am not as involved in the comic world as I had been in the past; so I hope you know what you are talking about...:p since I have made an appt. to go buy them Wednesday morning.
I spoke with him on the phone today and got a bit more information;
the fact that the Wolverine #1 is a CGC 9.8 pretty much cinched it for me.
He is also selling about 150 X-men between #147 and #325 for $100. It also includes 114,128,129,131, and 143. I already have 50-100 X-Men in this range I need to get rid of, including 4 or 5 copies of #266 (which IMO seems way overvalued in price guides); so I am leaning towards not buying them. Any thoughts on the "flipability" (I invent words whenever I feel like it:cool:) of those X-Men? It seems to me that the market is not particularly hot for these.

Matt,if that #1 is really CGC you've got your money back right there. If it the limited Series #1 that will net you a nice little profit.Good Luck!

For the X-Men...#266 is hot. It should be at its peak before the movie. After that, it'll cool really quick.

No brainer if you got the cash and the condition holds up. Get both the Wolverine and X-Men, then see what else he has.
Course you now open yourself up to the joys of comic book selling. Can be fun except when its not.
Good luck.

MG, thanks for correcting my misperception re: X-Men #266!! I just checked the completed listings on Ebay and was stunned by the high prices ($26 in Fine+, $90 for slabbed 9.6, etc.). Time to dig those puppies out and here's hoping that they are in top condition.
Unfortunately, one of the comics missing from this potential lot I am considering buying is #266.

I was looking at an old list of comics I had and I mistakenly wrote down #266 not #268. So I have 6 copies of #268 not the first gambit; and I thought I had a few hundred dollars coming in. :( oh well.
OK, I bought both lots, although I am not sure I should have bought the X-Men. I guess I am stuck trying to sell 250 copies of X-men between about 150-350. Anybody interested in 5 copies of X-Men #215? or 5 copies of annual #11? haha
The Wolverine lot was pretty impressive. It included 1-100, limited edition 1-4, doubles of 4-7 and another dozen issues and about 25 other worthless wolverine junk that makes for good reading. There were also two cool signed Wolverine Origins #1 that were CGC. (unfortunately not the real Wolverine #1). I am new to photobucket; so let's see if I can get this right...

Its a good buy on the Wolverines. As long as you are not in a rush you should make some coin it. Slap them up on comicsbid.com and see what happens.
What did you pay for the 250 X-Men comics?

Here's the image of your scan. Looks great, just click on the IMG code and it automatically copied the link and then come here and "paste" it in the message area (no need to do anything else). Presto!

I paid $100 for the X-men. It included 114,128,129,131, and 143 in mid-grades or lower, and nice copies of 201, 210, 211, 213, 221, 244, and 248.
Here's the link for the other CGC Wolverine:

And as someone new to this, can someone tell me how I make the photos magically appear in the post themselves rather than inserting the link.

Move the cursor over the picture in your album and a block will pop down, you'll see the link for "IMG" code, high-light it and right-click it, it copied already. Come back here and "paste" the link by right-clicking the mouse.

You did good on the X-Men lot for $100 as well. Slice it and dice it and start working on that profit.

Matt
Are you going to sell any of these books OR are they for your personal collection??
Very nice grab on that Wolverine origins #1 book

Just keep in mind that Wolverine 1 the Mini Series is the No1 book slabbed at CGC over any other book.
Other then that its a good flip if the grades hold up even if they are lower you will make you money back I think.

Razorz,
My OCD side took over this afternoon and I already pulled the X-Men out that I didn't have and sorted the rest in with the other X-men I have to sell. All told, I now have about one long box of Uncanny X-men to sell, and a short box of various other newish ('90s to present) X-Men stuff to sell.
Since I already have them, I am definitely selling the Wolverine 1-4 mini series and all the Wolverine duplicates. I am probably going to try to sell the Wolverine 1-100 as a lot. I will also probably try to sell the various miscellaneous Wolverine stuff.
I figure over the course of my life, I have owned (or co-owned with my brother when we sold together at conventions) approaching 20,000 comics - perhaps more - and the two signed CGC Wolverines are the first two CGC comics I have ever owned. In general, I am not a huge fan of slabbed comics. So I am actually considering selling these two as well.
Fastball,
Thanks for the info regarding slabbed copies of Wolverine. Following is my general opinion based on my limited perspective regarding CGC. It is only really worthwhile (solely from a financial perspective) to slab comics if they are at least 9.6 or above for bronze/copper/modern and about 9.2 or above for silver or older. Since I haven't looked at them all carefully yet, all I know is that they are at least VF, but I don't think they are the kind of pristine comics meriting CGC slabbing. (I am old school, so I am uncomfortable with a lot of the decimal gradations in grading.)

Anything 9.2 and above has a market, it's just the higher the number the more people think their worth more which in some cases might be true but if it's near mint then you have a good book. (IMO) I have a very-very hard book to get in high grade because leather can't be changed & this being said anything with leather bound and from talking to people via internet and doing my home work alot of people won't have leather bound books graded because the fear of them coming back low grade plus the cost of any leather bound book just cost alot of money so the print runs on them are very-low.
Also anything uncanny x-men #200 & below are really good money makers & can be flipped some what easy, but you also just like any other book need to find the buyer for them.
