View Full Version : Should I CGC it?

In the CGC census, there are four graded copies of this; one 9.0, two 8.5 and one 8.0. If I slab it, what do y'all think the likelihood is that it will come back as highest graded?

Nope. Doubt it would come back as highest graded. Just my opinion, of course.

Matt not to burst your bubble but it's not likely to be the highest. :(

Thanks and no bubble burst...I didn't think it would either, but I have heard of the so-called CGC "grading on the curve" for pre-silver age comics, which is why I asked.

They do but there are many rounded corner bends but then again it might still come back high & will generate a nice $$$ price because it's a photocover.

Of course, it may not come as the highest graded but this book looks a lot nicer.

It won't be the highest graded but it is still a nice book. Are you CGing for yourself or for resale? Either way I would probably go for it (so long as you're done reading it) LoL!

I'm thinking 7.5 VF- because of the upper right slight color breaking corner crease...after 7.5 creases aren't supposed to break color according to the OGG. But that's just the front cover scan I'm basing this on.

8.0 the stress mark in the middle looks pretty rough. The rest is just light wear. Nice book may go higher or lower then 8.0, but I think that is pretty close. It wont get a 9.0

I don't know guys.A little pressure and a dab of color touch and I think it'll go 9.4 easy#censored#.

I couldn't really tell what scuff marks were done by the scanner..I hoped the scuff mark by the # was from the scan and the thick line going down the whole cover was from the scanner. If they weren't from the scanner then my grade would be even lower. Don't get me wrong, it's still a very nice book but it's hard to judge accurately from just a scan.

Nice book, Matt!
Unfortunately, I agree w/ the general concensus... likely not a top-of-the-heap copy. Decent for certain, but more likely in the 7.5-8.0 range considering the few spine stresses, corner bumps and top edge.
Man, those black covers are tough! #banghead#

The scuff mark by the number and the thick line are from the scanner, not wear on the comic.
Since it's been read by me (very carefully), I am probably going to slab it to sell. I like reading old westerns but they are not primarily what I collect. I have to admit, however, that I am a little traumatized by the thought of sending it to CGC. I recently acquired my first two CGC comics and have never actually submitted anything to be slabbed; so I am a CGC virgin. I guess there is a first time for everything.

Condition aside, Jace Pearson was not one of the real popular TV westerns, not like Bonanza or Have Gun Will Travel. I wouldn't gamble on it myself.

Dont slab it. It isnt worth it. Put high resolution scans of both front and back and sell it that way it wont increase the value another $20+ to make it worth it in my opinion.
But if you are doing to learn about how they slab then go ahead.

Thanks everyone for the comments. After reading the comments, I think I am not going to slab it. I guess it looked a lot better before the scan made all the defects so highly visible.

I agree, don't slab it. It is very difficult to re-sell any westerns for any money unless they are in very high grade or ultra-key issues or have major appearances.
