View Full Version : When to NOT Bag & Board?

As a byproduct of purchasing many collections (usually for their bronze or silver) I have lots of moderns that are bagged (many not boarded) and a few that were not even bagged. Some of the bags are a little tired looking and probably were not changed in the last 10 years or so. Average condition still is NM-
For instance long runs of New mutants, alpha flight, American Flagg, Judge Dredd, etc. ?

I'd probably just bag them in groups of 10-12, but then again, I'm not a big proponent of bags/boards unless it's a pricey book.
None of my moderns are bagged. I read them and throw them in a box for trade or recycling at the half-price bookstore.

It doesn't matter to me if the books I get are bulk bagged or individual. I rebag all my personal collection into mylars anyways. However, if I buy a book I expect that book in the condition stated. If you can get that book to me without damage in nothing but a bag, great! If I received books that were damaged due to packaging (bulk bagging and no boards) we would have a problem.

Almost every book I have bought in a collection or of the shelf will get bags & board... Doesn't matter because I would like to perserve that grade the best I can.
All personal books go in to mylars with silver age boards so that there is less damage to accure. Keep in mind everyone does things differently so what works for one might not be best for another.
Plus I love the bags that came from the 70's early 80's & even though they seem to look dirty I like how thick they are & tend to keep them for my personal books as well (new bag first then a second bag over the 1st)

I pretty much bag everything and board most things. It's neater, the comics hold up better and there is less of a dust problem. Unbagged comics get dusty. (No I'm not a neat freak, I just have allergies and stuff)

I realize now after reading some of the responses that I did not make the reason for my poll very clear, although I did post it in the "Sellers corner". The question was not in regards to what you do with your personal collection but what you would do as a seller of commons that if auctioned, often end up selling anywhere from 25-50 cents each when sold in long runs. If your auction ends up on the low end of this range the cost of new individual bags and boards (not including the time to replace them all) can almost eat up 1/2 of the final bid.

If I have enough I'll send all books in 1 bag & board BUT~BUT if and only if I am running low will I double the books 2-in-1
A few times (don't like to do it but i ran out of backing boards) have i sent out a couple books with no boards sandwiched between books that have boards ALL books had bags that I will no ship with out. I live in N.W.Illinios and weather here just like anywhere kinda sucks so I wouldn't want someone to get stuff i shipped that were stuck together.
I save all my old bags & boards just for this reason, I would rather send out a book protected then no protection at all.
Hope this helps a little.

Again all my comics are bagged and boarded! Since I don't buy comics with the idea of reselling I only resell if I have more of an issue or am not reading it or collecting it anymore!

I personally would bag and board every comic going out as a purchase because I know customers appreciate the extra effort. It also more importantly, looks professional.
I'm ALWAYS more impressed when I receive a batch of comics that are bagged and boarded, it makes me feel like they are more protected and that the seller took the time to do it.
My own collection, I bag/mylar AND board the older ones first but eventually want to do that to every one of them. I don't know really why you would just bag and not board?? Other than to save some money...I'm not crazy about just bagging but that's just me.

Normally I will bag and board, sometimes two comics, one front and one back and then take them all and put them in a larger bag to produce something of a comic brick.
If they were 25-50 cent comics as you suggest, I probably would still bag them each, but probably not board them.

I bag and board all books sold. I like to use SA bags and boards so I put 2 in one on each side with no problems. I like to use bubble wrap and then two pieces of cardboard to keep the books safe. I ship in boxes so its really hard for the post office to damage one of my books that I ship. They have to get thru the box, then the cardboard then the bubble wrap to hurt them. I played around with different shipping methods for years, but this the one I like the best.
I recycle all bags I get as packing because most of the time they are decent enough to use when I get them anyway. I keep all the boards in a box and use them as extra packing as well especially on Flat Rates over seas because after two pieces of cardboard they can still slide in there pretty easy for additional strength.

JDB's "brick" method is the one I like best.
