Atomic War was a short series from 1952-53.

This is an interesting series about our fears of the use of Atomic weapons just a few short years after their creation.

These comics pit the United States VS Russia in a nuclear showdown.

I will provide a cover scan and a short review of each comic.

Lets start with Atomic War #1.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b125/kammion/atomicwar1.jpg

Issue #1 Part 1....."The Sneak Attack"

Russia professes to the West a pledge of peace.....all the while planning a sneak attack on New York City. The Attack succeeds and New York City is destroyed over the next 5 pages.

The Air Force shoots down the Russian bombers and take the Russian pilots prisoner. They are questioned and state that their high command say that the US was going to attack them so they had to attack first.

Another Russion bomber releases a nuke to strike Washington DC but a brave US pilot sacrafices himself by running into the nuke before it can hit ground thus saving DC.

Part 2....."Berlin Powder Keg"

Berlin is nuked by the Russians and the Allied forces there end up in a bunker. They find out that along with New York....Chicago and Detroit have also been destroyed by Atomic Bombs.

Fighting between Russian and Allied troups insues culminating in the destruction of a bridge to keep Russian tanks from reaching the Allies.

A small force of Allied planes head east for the first counterattack against the Russians. Hope for the ground soldiers!

Part 3......"Counterattack!"

In Greenland a large US secret airbase prepares itself for a mission to strike back at the Kremlin.

A saboteur is at the Greenland base. He ends up destroying several planes before he is captured. Once he is caught he gives up information and the rest of the planes are saved.

We end the comic with a mighty armada of US Allied planes traveling to targets in Russia to deliver a retalitory strike of A-Bombs for the attacks against the US & Allies.

World War III has begun.......

Other comics in the series to come later!

Next up.....Atomic War #2.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b125/kammion/atomicwar2.jpg

Issue #2 Part 1....."Operation Vengeance"

The US has been attacked by Russia with nuclear weapons with New York, Chicago and Detroit being destroyed! The US has three squadron of bombers heading for Russian targets in a retalitory nuclear strike. Russian Migs intercept the squadrons and an air battle begins.

One brave airman makes it through to his target Sverdlovsk and the city is wiped off of the map with a direct A-Bomb hit! The bomber is destroyed right after it released it's nuke.

The next city to be left in a molten inferno from being struck by an A-Bomb is Chelyabinsk but again not without the loss of more planes and the airmen who fly them.

Finally, the bombers reach Moscow and the capital city of the Communist world is blown to hell.....not by an A-Bomb.....but by something 100 times more powerful.....the first Hydrogen Bomb ever used!!

The cost of human life and airplanes was great but the Allies have struck a major blow to the Russians!

Part 2....."The Ice-Box Invasion"

The USA has a military outpost in the frozen wastlands of Alaska. In an air attack the Russians launch an offensive that fills the skys with paratroopers and equipment!

The brave US soldiers bravely hold off the Russians attack in the snow and repel the invaders sending them back to Siberia!

Part 3......"Mission Demolition"

In Europe, The red armies have pushed back a weak UN force and now the Russians are reading to cross the Rhine in their final drive to reach the Atlantic.

Brave soldiers risk their lives to set explosive charges on the bridges to stop the Russians from pushing forward.....They succeed!

The Red army loses many tanks and other equipment in the explosions! Then the Atomic Artillery goes about finishing off the rest of the Russian army on the other side of the river.....thus ending the Red Offensive!

Our comic ends on a quiet and peaceful day but with a question of even though the Russians were stopped this time when will the next offensive be?!?

Issues #3 & 4 in the series to come later!

Finally, Atomic War #3......

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b125/kammion/atomicwar3.jpg

The cover actually shows events which happened in issue #1.....the H-Bomb dropped on the Kremlin.

Issue #3 Part 1....."Commando Crackerjack"

Our story beings with Russian bombing London (no nukes). UN Commandos begin intensive training to begin an assalt on a Red held island. One Commando seems to be a coward but completes the training for the mission.

After a major battle the mission is successful and the island falls into the commandos hands. The UN troops use the Red missile battery against the Russian held mainland!

Finally, One last Russian battleship must be destroyed and it is the coward soldier who is the one to swim a powerful mine to the hull of the boat. He is gunned down just as he completes his mission receiving a heroes death.....

Part 2....."Log of the Snorkel Wolf Pack"

Russian submarines wreck havoc against the UN forces in the Atlantic but the tide turns and the UN forces wipe out the Russian subs.

A Russian Commanders log is found in a net and the rest of the story is told from the Russian point of view....from destroying Allied ships to executing one of their own saliors for just speaking that peace would be a good thing.

Finally, as the Russian Commanders sub is sinking he takes the cowards way out by suicide thus ending the commanders log and second story.

Part 3......"Slash by the Iron Greyhounds"

The story begins with the Russians impatient to overtake Paris. The Russians send their tanks, artillery, rockets, bombers and atomic howitzers against the UN troops in an allout effort to overtake the Allies.

The UN troops have a suprise for the Reds....a new weapon! Gigantic "Victory Guns" send radar controlled locator shells directly to the Russian targets totally destroying the offensive. We leave the story with hope that the tide has turned and freedom will hold against the communist war mongers.

Issue #4 in the series (the last issue) to come later!

Here it is.....the last issue Atomic War #4......

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b125/kammion/atomicwar4.jpg

I like the message on the missile being launched...."New Year Greetings - 1961".

Issue #4 Part 1....."Artic Assault"

After the atomic bombs have fallen both American and Russians are now engaged in a long-range assault on each other.

We find out that Russia has a secret air base in their northern most islands in the artic and they plan on launching an attack dropping deadly nerve gas on US cities.

We of course attack the base with planes and parachute in ground troops. After many casualties one brave soldier makes it to a bunker and flamethrows the commies shooting at them from inside. The fire ignites the ammo killing all inside the bunker.

Red tanks come after the US troops. Bombers attack the tanks. Instead of hitting the tanks the bombers strike the stored nerve gas which engulfs the red tanks and then the winds carry the gas on into Siberia...poetic justice for the Russians!

Part 2....."Old Timers Die Hard"

The Russians have developed a secret weapon.....a pulverizer! They use it on the battlefield and the UN troop’s barbed wire barrier and weapons begin to melt! The GI's are overrun....

An old General stays at the front to mount a counter attack but the pulverizer destroys their weapons too and they have to retreat.

The Reds always start their attack with a smokescreen. The General figures out a way to get rid of the smokescreen and thus destroying the pulverizers before they can melt the Allied weapons.

With the pulverizers gone the Allies send the Reds into retreat thus neutralizing the offensive!

Part 3......"Operation Satellite"

Both the US and Russians are determined to get the upper hand on the other with satellite technology. The Russian technology is more advanced so we send in a spy who volunteers even though he knows it is most likely a suicide mission.

He meets up with a spy already in the Russian camp who gets him a Russian colonel's uniform. He makes himself up as the Russian Colonel who runs the satellite technology and kills the Colonel.

Impersonating the Colonel he changes the targets of the satellite weapon and the Atomic missiles instead destroy Russian targets.

The impersonator is arrested as a scapegoat for the disaster and he unflinchingly goes to his execution.....he did not die in vain however since he helped destroy the satellite project and the US scientists now are sure to have the time to catch up with the Russian satellite technology.

Part 4......"Peril at Ploesti"

Even though many nations have ban together against the Russians some Americans believed the US could go it alone and needed no help.

One such Commander was to destroy oil fields in Rumania. He was told to take orders from a Turkish Navy man and was none to pleased!

They go on the mission together and the American is injured and can't walk. At risk of the mission and his own life the Turk carries out the mission and gets the American back safely.

The American has learned a valuable lesson and in friendship shakes the hand of the Turk who saved his life stating that he would be honored to have him at his side in battle should they go into action ever again.

Thus ends the series Atomic War!

Hope you all had a fun read!

Don't know if they did or not Jordan.....but if I were betting I would say probably not.

They can be a tad pricey just to read (basically that is what I did which is why I got the lowest grades possible!)
