What do you think could be done to increase traffic? I've got a couple of long boxes of common stuff that I could sacrifice but that doesn't generate much fee income for Hoss or draw in any new buyers...

Hell, I need to sell some more books so I can bid on that Conan #1!!! It's a shame that you guys don't read Nora Roberts, Sherrilyn Kenyon, etc!! But if your other half does please send her to my stores. I have lots of romance books, etc up for sell and it's all for a good cause (me buying a Conan #1):

suggestion..
just a thought.. but I've always thought that if you wanted to compete in the auction market you need to really get a ton of collectables added right off the bat..
maybe reward some folks for posting a large number of things? Maybe if you post 100 items in 48 hours that they won't have to pay ending value fees on them? Yeah that means offering the service for free for a while, but it will encourage folks to post lots of items and build a market which folks would come to see - and once you have enough activity you could change the fee..
just a thought since I'm not actually doing any selling right now.

Agreed. Word of mouth advertising is great but the site really does need to reach out to some of the big name sellers (Mile High/Lone Star/ Neat Stuff/J & S/New England) and make it worth their time to come over & bring their customer base with them. It wouldn't be out of line to give some "name sellers" totally free access (no cost listing/no fees selling) to build the site over the 1st year. Imagine the influx of bidders if Mile High and Lone Star were including a link to the website in every news e-mail they send out. Im in the advertising business & you would be amazed at the amount of stuff that is given away at no cost to help build up business relationships.
