And here's the result. Tip Top #39, July '39, as I received it:

Same book after refolding and a few months of pressing:

Are you planning to flip it or is it for your own collection?

Doesn't hurt it at all in my opinion. You simply took a simple step to return the book to something more like it's original appearance. Quite an improvement IMHO.

I think that it looks 10 times better. It is obvious what you did but the presentation value alone adds to it, and it is a low grade copy to begin with. It would not affect the grade in any significant way but it surely adds to it's desirability!

Linda, I'm just a lowly collector, I don't sell books, for the most part. So this goes into my binder with the other early Tip tops, Sparklers, etc. If I did sell it, of course i would disclose the pressing, but I think anyone in the market for this book would recognize it pretty quickly.
I do have a box of GA duplicates that I'd let go cheap if there's any interest. All funny books though, Lulu, Tarzan, etc. No superheroes.

Tarzan, did you say Tarzan??? Do you happen to have a list of the Tarzan books? I love and collect the Dell, Gold Key Tarzan books!! Don't happen to have any John Carter do you?

So did you do the old fashion press, i.e. heavy book and wait? Did you disassemble the book to do this? That looks wonderful now.

Jnine, I have tried to disassemble books in the past, but didn't have good luck with it. I end up doing more dameage to the paper near the staples.
I have a great oversized hard cover book, Little Nemo in Slumberland. I open the comic to the centerfold, flatten it by hand, and lay it open and flat in the Nemo. Then I put a comic box on it and leave it for a month or so, depending on thickness. Once it's reasonably flat and without too much memory of the bad fold, I refold it by hand, or sometimes use a flatedge. The tricky part is to close the Nemo on it while it's still folded correctly. Sometimes I need to adjust the fold after a month or so. I put the heavy box of comics I'm not likely to ever need to look at on top. Dark Horse works great. Anywhere from 3-6 months seems to work. Then I try not to leave the finished comic out in the open for long, I get it stored in a binder where it still has a little pressure to help keep its shape.

And you've got to admit that Jane Withers is hot. I figure she'd only be about 82 by now.

Don't forget Joe "Flash" Gordon at the bottom of the page. He was just elected to the baseball Hall of Fame by the veterans committee.

Thanks for explaining the process. I would never attempt to disassemble a book myself either as I am not handy like that. I have a few comics with some serious outset that could use some fixing. Nothing worth money so I cannot ruin anything.
