the bronze age Superman Family series starts with #164 around 1975 I guess. I assume it's a continuation or split-off from some other series but Superman #163 would have been in the 1960s

Does anyone know why the series starts with #164?

Ah, this is an easy one.

Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen ended with issue #163, Superman Family takes over it's numbering at #164 with the Jimmy Olsen series as a regular feature. Also Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane ends around the same time and becomes a feature in Superman Family.

At 100 pages, it was too big to fit into a #1.

Seriously, did folks with subscriptions to Jimmy Olsen (all twelve of them) start receivinf Superman Family in the mail? That'd be a bonus, going from a 20¢ book to a 50¢ book !!

I joke about that series too but honestly after reading it there are some good stories there. I cannot believe JO lasted for that many issues either.
