I would like to know if anyone else replaces the bags and/or boards of comics you buy from other folks (LCS, ebay, comicsbid, etc) when they come in?
If I buy a book for my personal collection I always replace the bags and I always use boards on my keepers!

Do you use tape on your bags to keep them closed?
I use Scotch's removable tape on my own!

How often do you file your comics away?
I try but I only have four shelves (of a LARGE bookcase) of comics to file away, does that tell you anything?

Do you buy comics, not knowing if you really need them? In other words not check your want list to make sure it's one you need. Or do you just go by memory?
I use to be very bad about only going with my memory but after I found myself buying more comics that I already had NM or better condition copies of I started keeping a "want list"! I'm to the point, that I just don't have the extra money to buy comics I don't need since I really hate selling my comics!

Do any of ya'll have trouble with your "other halves" because you are a collector/packrat?
I have been lucky in life myself! Arthur even let me have the master bedroom as my office/comic room so I would have enough room for everything. I just had to let him put his gun safe in there too! :D

I would like to know if anyone else replaces the bags and/or boards of comics you buy from other folks (LCS, ebay, comicsbid, etc) when they come in?
It depends on the condition of the bag. If it's yellowed or one of those sticky resealable ones, out it goes!

Do you use tape on your bags to keep them closed?
Tuck that flap, no tape!

How often do you file your comics away?
Not nearly often enough, sometimes I'll make an effort, but I tend to file away only those series which are in easily accessible boxes, resulting in some series going for months, dare I say years without getting filed!

Do you buy comics, not knowing if you really need them?
I've gotten better about that, although I sometimes will buy extra copies if I think the new copy looks better.

Or do you just go by memory?
HA!

Do any of ya'll have trouble with your "other halves" because you are a collector/packrat?
I got no other half...:(

I would like to know if anyone else replaces the bags and/or boards of comics you buy from other folks (LCS, ebay, comicsbid, etc) when they come in?
I end up replacing most bags/boards when I get them. Just seems that most comics I buy online, the bags/boards are not in the best shape.

Do you use tape on your bags to keep them closed?
I use just a small enough amount to hold it closed. Don't want it sticking to the comic accidentally when I take it out.

How often do you file your comics away?
All of my comics are bagged/boarded/stored in comic boxes. I have a closet in the basement with commercial shelving specifically for comics.

Do you buy comics, not knowing if you really need them? In other words not check your want list to make sure it's one you need. Or do you just go by memory?
I used to go by memory, but once my collection got so big, that went out the window. Now I have my collection in a database so that I don't buy duplicates unless I want to.

Do any of ya'll have trouble with your "other halves" because you are a collector/packrat?
No, my Wife rolls her eyes sometimes, but does not complain about my addiction. She knows I have been reading comics since I was just a little sidekick, and it's not about to end anytime soon.

I would like to know if anyone else replaces the bags and/or boards of comics you buy from other folks (LCS, ebay, comicsbid, etc) when they come in?

If it's a decent book, it goes into a Mylite 2. I usually keep the old board.

Do you use tape on your bags to keep them closed?

Yep.

How often do you file your comics away?

If by file away, do I find space in a random short box and put it in there with no rhyme or reason, then every time I get new books. If file away means could I locate a given book in a few minutes? Then the answer is never.

Do you buy comics, not knowing if you really need them?

No, I have a decent mental checklist of the Silver Age books I have. If in doubt, I decide to buy based upon the size of the bargain.

Or do you just go by memory?

See above.

Do any of ya'll have trouble with your "other halves" because you are a collector/packrat?

No, but I don't ask about the Kohl's bags.

Yeppers. As soons as I get a book in I swap out the boards and backs. Esp if I bought from a shop that stamps their name on their boards.

Do you use tape on your bags to keep them closed?
1 strip removable tape.

How often do you file your comics away?
I shoot for once a month.

Do you buy comics, not knowing if you really need them?
Some things are memory but mostly I go by my wantlist. Early GL and JLA I know where I've got holes in the early issues. Copper and Bronze stuff though, I definitely need my list.

Do any of ya'll have trouble with your "other halves" because you are a collector/packrat?
Wife never gives me any troubles and actively encourages me if she's in the store with me. I discuss any single purchase over $100 dollars with her and I always make sure I show off my new purchases. She the victim of my enthusiams because I don't really know any other collectors in the area so I don't have any local folks to talk to. She does a good job of pretending to be impressed and enthusiastic. She's learned that a 25c cover deserves an 'ooo', a 15c cover deserves an 'ahhh' and a 12c cover deserves an 'ooo ahhh'. She also knows that a 10c cover means I probably forgot to talk to her about the budget. :D

Anything I want to keep I put in a Mylite2 with a Gerber buffered backboard.
I have found that 95% of the books I buy have at best the cheap spray coated backboards that lose their acid neutralization effectiveness after a couple years.

I use tape

I file every couple months

I buy when the deals are just too good to pass up

My other half understands my weaknesses, far too well

Some great answers!

On that last question about the "other half", Arthur can't really say anything when just one gun can cost as much as $500.00 and don't lets get started on his reloading!! So I'm good to go when it comes to my little collection!! :)

On the bag and/or boards question I always change them out but I don't throw out the old bags or boards unless they are in bad shape. I can always use them for something! What can I say I'm a PACKRAT!!

Nowadays I have to use my "Want List" because the memory just ain't there no more. Plus I'm really bad about remembering the covers but not the issue numbers! Hell, I'm 53 and I have CRS what can I say!!

On the tape I just like to tape my flaps down and with using that "removable" tape it's so easy and you don't have to worry about tape sticking to the books and doing any damage to them. I wish I had that kind of tape back in the 70's & 80's and knew then what I know now about bags, tape & books! Of course if I knew then what I know now, I would be a RICH BITCH and wouldn't have to worry about working & making money!! ;)

Only if they look bad, or it's a high dollar book.

Do you use tape on your bags to keep them closed?
Never, I fold the flap in.

How often do you file your comics away?
When I'm done reading them.

Do you buy comics, not knowing if you really need them?
What does "not need them" mean?

Do any of ya'll have trouble with your "other halves" because you are a collector/packrat?

Yes indeedy. Remember that tape that I don't use on the bags?...

I always replace the bags and boards unless they are obviously new.

Do you use tape on your bags to keep them closed?

I use the resealable bags. I just love those!

How often do you file your comics away?

I usually file em away once I get a short box filled up with random comics. I hate filing comics!

Do you buy comics, not knowing if you really need them? In other words not check your want list to make sure it's one you need. Or do you just go by memory?

I used to be able to tell which ones I have already purchased, but these days I'm finding out that there are more and more dupes finding their way into my purchases!

Do any of ya'll have trouble with your "other halves" because you are a collector/packrat?

I have my own comic room, so as long as it stays in there its all good!

I file my comics almost immediately after reading them. Then again, I only buy two or three a week, so it's no big deal. I have a rack with short boxes in a bedroom closet where I keep the titles I currently collect (or may want to re-read frequently, such as Sandman or Books of Magic).

About once a year, I'll go through those boxes and send some stuff down to my garage storage area. They're most good stuff that's not current, like Cerebus) or Frank Miller's first run on Daredevil.

That way, the pertinent books are in easy reach.

Also about once a year, I go to my parents' house (currently rented) and pick up a few SA books, especially if the creator is going to be at Comic-Con and I want them signed.

Good questions and love reading the answers.

I would like to know if anyone else replaces the bags and/or boards of comics you buy from other folks (LCS, ebay, comicsbid, etc) when they come in?
I normally just keep them in the bag/board that they are sent to me in unless they are gross. I am just getting ready to do my first rebag and board on about 200 comics.

Do you use tape on your bags to keep them closed?
I try to tuck the flap in and no tape. Sometimes it works great others times it bubbles at the time plus it's time consuming. I have tried little heart stickers but they are not to good with reusably.

When I get a comic the first thing I do is remove the tape from the bag and if it does not give than I cut it so I have no way of getting the comic stuck to the tape.

How often do you file your comics away?

I have a basket that I put new comics or comics to read in and try to file them away after reading them.

Do you buy comics, not knowing if you really need them? In other words not check your want list to make sure it's one you need. Or do you just go by memory?
For specific runs that I am going after, if I were to rely on my poor memory, I would never have anything to read. But I do go by memory on single issues that I want and still have never gotten a duplicate unless I was upgrading.

Do any of ya'll have trouble with your "other halves" because you are a collector/packrat?
Sadly I am single so my only problem is my tiny space constraints.

Only on the grungy/older bags. The keepers get new bags & boards. The rest do get an upgrade though.I do trash a lot of old bags or use them for other stuff.

Do you use tape on your bags to keep them closed?

One piece of Invisible tape only.2 pieces of tape is a no-no

How often do you file your comics away?

I used to do it with every book I picked up.Now it's been a good year since I've done it.

Do you buy comics, not knowing if you really need them? In other words not check your want list to make sure it's one you need. Or do you just go by memory?

I've got most of the runs finished I have been working on but even the few I am chasing now I still need a list, even though there are less than 50 books I'm really after.

Do any of ya'll have trouble with your "other halves" because you are a collector/packrat?

HAH! Are you kidding? My wife is a bigger pack rat than I am.No collectibles, just "stuff".

One store I shop at doesn't use tape; the other does. I just leave the books as they were when I bought them. I don't put tape on bags myself.

I generally keep a mental list of comics I need, which is certainly no way to handle it. One time I was in San Diego for the convention. I saw a couple minor GA books I might want, so I called a friend, and asked him to go to my place (he has a key) and read me my want list, which was on my bulletin board above my computer. Saved me from buying at least one I didn't need.

Now there's only one funny book I'm really looking for, as I need it to complete a run. There are lots of things I'd like, but they're out of my range. This one book is doable, though.

Oh boy, this is somewhat embarrassing.

I'm looking for Lorna The Jungle Girl #18.

I started collecting this title because I was looking for Russ Heath artwork. I stumbled across an auction for Lorna #7 which he did the cover for. I won the auction, then kind of liked the cheesy late Golden Age stories.

Lorna wasn't as blatantly sexy as Sheena or Shanna, and she wasn't always depicted in overt bondage scenes, as that girl from Jungle Comics always was.

Over the past couple of years, I've managed to get all except #18. It's come up for auction once, but I was outbid.

So if anyone has a copy for sale... I'm not fussy about condition, reading copies are fine with me.

Thank you very much. I made an offer around 10:30 pm PT and it accepted. My collection of Lornas is now complete.

In fact, the offer was accepted so quickly, I probably could have gotten away with even less. Oh well, I was willing to pay it so good transaction all around.

It was probably set up to automatically accept an offer of a certain value so the speed of acceptance isn't really a way to judge how close you were to their minimum threshold.

[quote=fulltimer56;61036]I would like to know if anyone else replaces the bags and/or boards of comics you buy from other folks (LCS, ebay, comicsbid, etc) when they come in?
I always replace the bag/board whenever I get a new lot of comics. I don't know how old the bag is and the cheaper bags will start turning gold color. The same can be said about the backing boards. The bags I know is new I give to my friends, I hate seeing them go to waste

Do you use tape on your bags to keep them closed?
I use the flip and stick bags. These are great when you'll bagging bulk lots. On my last couple orders I had some trouble with the size of the bags. The company I bought them from customized them so they could sell their backing boards. Any oversize comic such as an annual wouldn't fit, the flap wouldn't touch the taped area. A standard backing board wouldn't fit. I ended up cutting off 1/8" or more from each board with a paper cutter. Try doing that with 10,000 boards. These were Silver age bags (they don't make gold age). The silver age fits most comics. Now I'm debating whether go back to the standard flap bags.

How often do you file your comics away?
I usually enter everything on computer once I get it. I'll wait until I get a large lot before I bag everything. I need to do this now.

Do you buy comics, not knowing if you really need them? Or do you just go by memory?
I usually have bible size comic list that I take with me. I still will buy stuff I already have once the conventions start and there's a buying frenzy. I don't have time to look, It just takes too much time. I look for a little of everything so Its very hard to keep turning the pages of my "do not have list", also after a while it just gets tiring.
Do any of ya'll have trouble with your "other halves" because you are a collector/packrat?
I'm single

I always enjoy bagging comics. I do need to go back and seperate the finished series stuff. I just file my stuff by title (A's go in with all the A stuff).

I jokingly told the seller if I knew he was so ready to okay the deal that I would have made him a lowball offer. He responded back saying he was about to make a counter-offer, but figured what the heck, he was in a good mood. His target was about $5 more than I offered.

So we're both happy. I have completed my run of this particular cheesy late golden age jungle girl funny books.

What's next? Probably some cheesy SA DC second tier book.

Yeah, but them cheesy titles are a lot of fun.I just got Last of the Viking Heroes yesterday & I've done read all of it.

Another good thing about them is you don't have to worry about multiple-hundred issue runs, although they are neat too.

I'm starting to take a liking to Dennis the Menace lately.Got a couple in misc. lots. The level of writing is just way above most humor titles.Very enjoyable.
