I'm looking into travelling to the States in the next few months to buy some original artwork. Which cons would you recommend? At the moment I'm thinking Heroes con as I've heard good things about it and although it's a small con they have some terrific guests. The other one I have in mind would be the Wizard World Chicago because it's a bigger con there may be more art dealers there.
West coast cons such as SDCC are out as they're too far for a 2-3 day trip.
Any suggestions?

Comic-Con San Diego is really the best place, as you wouldn't believe the number of artists sitting around in Artists Alley and in the booths.

But if you can't make it, your next best bet would probably be DragonCon in Atlanta.

It's actually bigger than ComicCon, but because it's focused on a wider range of fantasy, may not have quite as many comic-oriented artists as San Diego.

Artists Alley at Dragon Con is pretty good and always sold out! But for original art from Comic artists Heroes Con would be your best bet since it is a Comicbook con when Dragon Con like pasnat said is a wider range of stuff.

If you go to Heroes Con habib would be there and believe me he is a great help to you there. Thank you habib!!

Of course if you come to Dragon Con you would get to meet ME!!! #angelic#

BTW if you pick Dragon Con let me know? I will be staying at the Hyatt and might have room for you!

I hadn't considered Dragon Con. I had a look at their site and it looks like a good con. It's a possibility but it looks like Heroes Con has a better guest list of artists. Although it's the art dealer tables I'm really interested in.
Linda, you so don't want to share a hotel room with me.;) Us Irishmen go all kinds of crazy when we're abroad. I probably drink too much when I'm at home, but on vacation....

You're from Ireland? Whereabouts? I visited Ireland with my then-girlfriend back in 1989. Landed in Shannon then drove west around the Ring of Kerry and along the coast through Lahinch. Visited Tipperary, Rock of Cashel, and several other beautiful places before ending up in Dublin and flying to Scotland.

If you're used to Guinness, American beer will have all the impact of iced tea on you. Unless you buy copious amounts, which would deplete your art-buying money.

Glad you enjoyed your stay. I'm living in Galway. Great city to visit if you ever come back. If you get the weather, Ireland can be a beautiful place. Tonight the rain is pouring down and the wind is howling in my windows. As we say here ' It's a great country....if you could put a roof on it' #oldie#

One of my favorites places was Lahinch, and not because of any specific sites or attractions. It was a cold, dreary, windy day and I just enjoyed the dramatic atmosphere. I felt so Heathcliff-on-the-moors-ish. Very melancholy.

It rained most of the time we were there. We ducked into a pub in Tipperary so my girlfriend could use the WC, and I sat there, listening to the rain and staring out the window watching raindrops pelt the puddles. It was a very poetic experience, until Liz came back and started complaining about the weather again.

Good grief, she was Irish (still is, probably) and we had gone there to check out her family roots. She should have known the Ireland is the Emerald Isle because it gets a lot of water dumped on it. Anyway, after the trip I dropped her off at her home and that's the last time I saw her. Twenty years ago.

The fact that I enjoyed the trip greatly even though I was accompanied by a red-haired banshee shows that Ireland is a special place.

That's some story. You came all this way with her and never saw her again. I bet your life's alot easier for it though. Those red-heads are demons.( Except my dear mother.) #angelic#

I would recommend Chicago from my personal experience. Its cheaper and there are ALOT of dealers. I am sure San Diego has a ton of dealers too, but from what I hear it isnt cheap at all.

I think I bought about 200 quality books in Chicago at dirt cheap prices. Emmett knows what he is looking for so he will clean up. 50-75% of guide is not uncommon in some setups or are just liquidating. I also got several head sketches from Silverstri and Jim Lee for free.

Crap I misread your thread. Thought you were talking about back issues. As far as artwork San Diego cant be beat I dont think. Chicago has several, but it doenst compare I dont think.

Thanks for the tips, fastball. I actually made it to the San Diego con in 2006 for our honeymoon. Would love to go back sometime (with a suitcase full of cash). This time around, I'm looking for somewhere a little closer where I can get a cheaper direct flight so I'm thinking about Chicago at this stage.
