Hi,
I'm new to the boards and I had a quick question about a comic that I was wanting to submit to CGC. The comic is a PGX 9.9 low value, rarely collected, bronze age marvel series that I happen to collect. I have my entire collection of this comic series in CGC and I want to make this match (sort of speak) BUT, I would hate to lose the 9.9 grade on it. Should I submit to CGC for grading or just leave it as is?
Thanks for your input

I understand the way a collector's brain works. The need to have everything perfectly aligned, all the ducks in a row blah blah blah.
With this one, though, I think you would be well served by leaving the book alone. Why?
We will leave aside for the moment the notion that CGC and PGX may see the book as is at a different grade.
a. You crack the book, send it to CGC and hope for the same grade in return.
You also pray that the book isn't damaged when it was removed from the PGX plastic, when in transit or on return from CGC
b. You forward the book "entombed" in its PGX slab to CGC. "Somehow" it gets damaged on the way there, getting de-slabbed or on its way back (you'll never know).
Either scenario, if your book comes back at a lesser grade (and at these sort of rarified areas, the difference is as little as a fingernail mark), you have paid a lot in slabbing fees, shipping and insurance to get a book that might just come back as the same grade.
A pretty big outlay for a small "collecting" return.
My advice would be to see if another 9.9 turns up in a CGC slab. If the book is as low value as you say, it won't be that expensive - but it won't turn up that often either.
Remember grasshopper, collecting is a marathon, not a sprint.

Hi WTTB,
If you don't want to lose the grade I would keep it as is then. It really is up to you to determine which bothers you more...The different holder or lower grade.
Also, CGC just raised their price on Bronzes and I think its around the $40 mark now and higher insurance so you have that to consider.

Here is what I would put your odds at, assuming it arrived in the exact condition that you have it now (which is a big assumption):
CGC 9.9 less than 2%
CGC 9.8 25-40%
So, in other words, NO don't send it in.

Thank you for all of the responses, its greatly appreciated!
I do agree for the most part ........ but it kills me inside not having them all graded by CGC (for consistency sake and resell possibly down the road). Oh well, I'm gonna have to comes to grip with this and have myself a cup of coffee.
cheers

Well, you could just seek out another nice-looking, but non-graded copy of the same comic and submit it to CGC for slabbing.

Hey, sounds right up my alley -- what title is it? :p
My personal experience and humble opintion on the topic of PXG/CGC resubs leads me to believe that HG PXG books may perhaps see a lower score upon regrading and sometimes find previously overlooked resoration revealed on some older books. However, I've also seen that cleaner, mid-grade books often see a bit of a bump-up during regrading via CGC. So, it's still a crapshoot either way. ;)

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I wouldn't chance it unless you're prepared for a lower grade coming back.
Now if you are dead set on it and it kind of does sound that way, why not set yourself a time limit like two months to do it and in the meantime look high and low for another raw copy in that shape to send in or an already CGC'd copy you would accept. That way you'll know you tried and might feel better if it comes back at a lower grade.
I try doing that when I like something, I walk away and see if I still want it a few days later rather than impulse shop.
Keep in mind CGC is tougher at grading than the other place.

which poses another quandry for the collector - never speculate as that loses $$ always buy the stuff you like if it goes up in value consider it a bonus but as reading material the book in all honesty has done it's job

If you think it would come back with a lower grade then you must not think it is the grade that PGX gave it. IMO while there is the odd 9.9/10.0 out there that may actually be that grade the chances that you could get the same grade submitting it through the same process in the SAME DAY or next would probably be slim. I haven't seen enough 9.9 and 10.0's to judge if there is as clear a separation as there is between the 9.4->9.6->9.8 range.
Personally I would resubmit it to CGC because likely you could get as much for a CGC 9.8 as you would for a PGX 9.9. The only thing I would worry about is, depending on who you bought the book from, it failing the restoration check. There is at least one person out there selling 9.8 and 9.9 PGX books that is a known manipulator of books and gets a pass from PGX.

What's the big deal with CGC? Who cares if they grade comics better or a worth a little bit more. Your primary concern when sending a comic to CGC or PGX is to not only grade the comic, but to place it in a protective slabs. OMG CGC slabs suck! They are flimsier and they can break so easily. You can damage the comic if you sit on the CGC case, haha. PGX slabs are about twice as durable, and twice as thick. I sat on several of mine just to test them out and my comics are perfectly protected. Obviously, if your not planning on selling your comic I would go PGX for all of these reasons.

meh. You are wasting your money if you are sending books to either place for long term storage and protection. The outer shell may be better at PGX but the lat time i checked the inner casing often leaves something to be desired. If you want good long term storage mylars/mylites and full back are every bit as good as paying hundreds or thousands of dollars on getting a book slabbed.

This may work for you since you said the book was inexpesive.

Wow. Just, wow. So much ado over a 9.8 vs. a 9.9.
Just, wow.
But nooooooooooo, pro grading had nothing to do with the ruination of this hobby.
Notice how I used past tense. Because it died years ago. Nothing you can do about it now.
Should have slayed Borock when it still mattered.
