I'm not a big Marvel fan, but there's a garage sale ad for tomorrow morning for "Vintage comic books, including Captain America #100". Among you Marvelites, is this a big deal that I should really go after, or a yawner that should only be bought in high grade, low cost? And yes, I know the Guide prices. Thanks.

nan, I'm not sure if this Cap 100 is from 1968 or a later Cap series, but if it's the former, it's worth something. It would be Cap's very first appearance in his own book, when he took over the old Tales of Suspense title (and numbering).
Plus, it has an absolutely awesome Jack Kirby cover, showing Cap leading a charge of his various friends and allies. I already have one, but if it were available for a reasonable price, I'd go for it.

Like Pasnat said, I'd go for it.

OK thanks guys, I'll go give it a shot. Of course the sale started yesterday, so it could be that HG + LP = Long Gone.

As you stated mal, you know the price guide prices and can look up eBay completed listings to see if you can get a steal.
So that just leaves the perspective of 'is the book a significant key?' Personally, I've never gone out of my way to find a copy and I'm a Cap fan. I sought out an Avengers 4 and TOS 58 and 59. Even in the past couple years, when I looked for medium pricey Silver books, I bought a Spidey 11 and 16 and filled in some holes in my Avengers run from #10 and under.
I guess what I'm rambling on about is that I would buy one if a helluva deal fell in my lap, but I've always thought the book was a bit overpriced and not that important in the grand scheme of Marvel keys.

C.G.'s Two Rules of Thumb for Cap #100:
1) If you are buying a high grade copy, expect to pay $500+.
2) If you are selling a high grade copy, expect it to sell for less than $100.

Maybe I could get that guy who buys them for <$100 to go pick it up for me.

Same here. Same with Iron Man # 1 and Sub-Mariner # 1.

Not surprisingly, the status was indeed "long gone". So I picked up another book from exactly the same month (Apr-May 1968). I had to buy something after getting there at 8 AM on a Saturday morning.

You can add Incredible Hulk #102 to that list. They're all common books. When I first started collecting in the 70s, these were very common and could be had for a dollar or two, maybe even less. Those days are long gone. Nevertheless, they are not rare by any stretch of the imagination.
Having said that, I think long-time collectors are somewhat jaded. It is a key comic and if you don't have one and want one, it won't be that cheap. No matter how common it is.
BTW, nice pick up on the Brave & Bold.

I don't know if the link will come through, but there is an issue of cap #100 on auction right now at Bailey's/ The auction ends Tuesday i think and it's up to $180 already.
VG Conan #1 going for $75 Linda. That seems a touch high doesn't it? I got one just like it about a year ago for $40.

Nice new place here... my first post and I thought it was appropriate to post it under this thread... my favorite book! (Green Lantern comes real close though!!!)
Anyhoo, I have a funny feeling that Cap 100 is about to turn the corner and become a MAJOR key. No rhyme or reason to that... just a 'feeling'.

Welcome aboard, Owl!
I'm guessing you mean Captain America is your favorite, and possibly #100 is your favorite single issue?
I was about 14 when it came out and I remember being absolutely blown away by the cover. I was never a big Cap fan, and I'm not sure I even collected Tales of Suspense, but when I saw that Kirby cover, I knew I had to have it.
Of course, I was a Marvel zombie back then, and I bought into all the hype about the characters getting their own books. Submariner, Iron Man, Hulk, Dr. Strange, et al. Stan Lee made me feel like I was on the ground floor of something big.
At least I didn't speculate and buy multiple copies.

WTTB!
I dunno... it's had a long time to become a major key. What is it waiting for, Cap to die or something? :) I don't know what the GPA on this title is, but there are 189 copies slabbed NM- or better, so it's easy to find in high grade. Not sure what else it has going for it to push it to the upper echelon.

Have to agree that this book will be getting hot down the road. With the Cap movie followed by the Avengers this book is in line for a bump. If not a bump then it will certainly be hot and will sale at current prices. It was shocking to see how easy it was to get full guide & + prices on Iron Man #1 when the movie speculation hit. With Cap, early Avengers & Tales of Suspense are already being speculated on, Cap #100 will come around also in my opinion. While all the 1968 premiere books are out there in quantity, the Cap #100 then the Hulk 102 or Iron Man #1 (imo).

At a local Flea Market, over the summer, a raw copy sold for $100 (F/VF). I agree that this is a book that has been a loooooooong time coming as a key, but I sense a strong interest in the character starting to come around again!
I don't think #100 is my favorite Cap issue but certainly a favorite cover!
I'm thinking what issue is my all time favorite Cap issue (not including TOS) and it's hard to come up with that 1 issue!
Maybe #117 (1st Falcon)...
I just recently read issues #153 - 156! Wow!!!
I knew what #155 dealt with but never read it, so I bought it and then had to go back to fill out the story line... what a terrific read!
For those that haven't read these issues or don't know about them...
RUN AND GET THEM!!!

Well, you guys might be right - there are a lot of stupid speculators out there. I just think a Key should have something key about it. A cover alone shouldn't make a book a Key. At least it has Kirby art inside, not like a lame Schomburg book or something.
First issue of his own title? Big deal, he appeared like 50 times before this issue, and the only reason he got a title at this time was b/c the distribution restrictions Marvel had were lifted. No new character introduced, not hard to find in high grade, and a continued story. Shouldn't Tales Of Suspense # 99 be a key too, since it has the 1st part of the story continued in Cap # 100? (Oh, right, these will be slabbed, so no need to read the thing )
And the original cover to Cap # 100 was better. I liked the foreboding shadow.

Do you have a link to somewhere that has it?

Just picked up a Cap #105 that (in my amateur opinion) is F+ at least for $8.00.
Think I'll take that over Cap #100 for $200

Ya know... I thought I had a link, but no dice. Then I started thinking, and I might have seen it in an issue of Comic Book Marketplace or Comic Book Artist. Who knows what issue, I have too many to look through.
