Hey gang!
I got that old Red Ryder # 90 graded by CGC and it is Universal (blue label) 9.6!! They gave it pedigree designation for the 6 covers.
Any idea what I should ask for when I sell it? (I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a resto job. Not into westerns)

Did CGC call it "The Chunko Pedigree"?

That is an awesome book. Six covers...sheesh...I can't even find doubles these days.

Congratulations, Dan. I'm not into westerns either but that's an exceptional looking comic even with one cover.

Did they actually call it a pedigree or was that a typo?

Well, on the order status page it showed "sextuple cover" under the pedigree heading, so I just assumed that meant pedigree designation. Maybe not. Dunno.
Also got a 3.0 on my Marvel Mystery Comics 92, and a 3.0 on my Avengers # 4 (Darn piece of back cover missing)

Did they give an individual grade for each of the six covers or just the inner-most and outer?

Wow, a 3.0 Avengers #4 is still pretty nice in my book. How much of the back cover is missing anyway? Does the front cover look more like a 5.0?

Let's get down to the really important question. What grade did they give that Cosmic Odyssey i see in the picture?

Dan, I should have realized you would probably post this at the corral also. I responded at ebay and was basically trying to say "Don't try to sell this on Ebay". You should approach ComicLink or Heritage or something similar and see if they would like to put it in one of their featured auctions and if it is important enough, what kind of exposure they would guarrantee you. Maybe front page for a certain period of time prior to the auction, etc.
Here is the ebay post:
It just so happens that a 9.6 Edgar Church #91 sold in Feb of this year for $250
This should go for several multiples of that. How many is impossible to guess and I only think you do yourself harm to put this up as a BIN.
Additionally I don't think a standard ebay auction will get the exposure that this book deserves. This can't be done in 7 days, as your target market is HIGHLY specialized. The ultimate purchaser will be more interested in the rarity of the high grade 6 covers than western themed comics.

I haven't received the book back yet so all I have to go on is the info on order status page. It just says 9.6 universal. I will call them when it gets back and get the detailed grading notes.
I sent a message to Heritage to see if they are interested. Will try comiclink as well. Thanks!! :)

Cosmis oddyssey would grade about 9.2/9.4 for condition, about 2.5 for content. :-D

I believe they will grade every cover, because the overall grade is whatever the best cover grades at. There was a classic example posted the other day on CGC. It's a Modern X-Men where the back cover has a big rip, but the label says 9.8. People say "hey, WTF?" until they realize it's a double cover.
And it's not a pedigree, that's just where they put the comment on the label.

Linda and Grin are right..
it's not a pedigree but it is a very rare type of book none the less.
DEFINATELY go the comic link or ha.com route to see the most $$ for your really cool book.
Six covers is unheard of and especially for a book that is that old and in that shape.
From what I've seen from double and triple covers from CGC, yes they give the grade for each cover on the label.
Good Luck!

Oh, okay. Don't deal with CGC much so was shocked when it was listed under pedigree section. Heard back from HA and they said they don't touch anything less than $5,000 estimated total and that a 9.2 is worth $125. (Not sure why they included a 9.2). They then asked if I would be selling my collection, which may bump it up to 5k. Nope. Just these bads boys. (this one, the Avengers 4 and MMC 92)
Will check out comiclink.
Would like to post at CGC, but alas I have a hotmail addy and they won't let me in. :???:

Try pedigreecomics.com too. I think they will charge you a 10% fee or commission for whatever your book sells there.

Congratulations on the book Dan.That's awsome, even though I've seen it nearly every time you've posted it,it never gets old.
Too bad about the chew on the Marvel Mystery, but it still looks good.
Now for the stir fry time. That book graded out a 9.6.One cover got that as the best cover. So,can I assume the Entire book is a 9.6? The way I'm seeing it,the best cover gets the grade and that's what is printed on the label.
I'm confused.Am I missing something?

Going to call them tomorrow. I think they were generous on page color. I was thinking more off-white than white. I really don't know how they grade the whole book in relation to the covers.
Yeah, bummed about the MMC92 as well, but will be throwing it up on eBay soon. Darn mice.

Nice pics. Nice books. Love that MMC 92 cover.
On one hand, I think you got a nice grade on that, at 3.0.
OTOH, it's the kind of book where eye appeal really rules the day, and that book's got it!

Told ya! They had to grade every cover, since the best cover is the final grade. Plus I'm sure they want to be consistent.
As for grading notes, I wouldn't expect much. A while ago CGC announced that they weren't listing grading notes on the higher grades (9.4 or higher IIRC).

That is one spectacular book. It is 58 years old yet still has the look of a fresh new comic with its 6 brand new covers.
By the way, what does the term "photo frontispiece" mean?

08-11-2009, 02:11 AM
Yes, except for the covers that aren't 9.6 :)
Well that's about as clear as mud.
Seems like Daffy Duck did a circular logic thing many, many years ago that made as much sense as cgc grading. If it is a 9.6 then the WHOLE book should be 9.6.Weakest link and all that. But I guess all this has been covered before.
Once again Dan,sweet books. What about that Avengers 4?

Maybe they make an exception on multiple cover books? Or, what if the outer cover got the 9.2 (or lower) and the inner covers got the better grades, I wonder if that would affect the overall grade.
Yes, lets see the Avengers #4.

If all else was equal, and the interior was "mint", the book gets the grade of the highest graded cover, no matter if it's the 1st cover or the 6th cover. If the outside cover is a 9.2 and the interior cover is 9.6, then the book is a 9.6. Why? Because you could take the outer cover off, of course.
Toz, I was being a bit of a wise-ass of course (what? who, me?) but I believe that besides the cover, the book is a 9.6. IIRC, I have seen a double cover book where the outside cover is (made up grades here) a 9.2, the inside cover is a 9.4, but there was a ripped page inside or something, and the book received an 8.5 grade. Don't quote this as fact, but I believe I have seen that type of example.

You being a wise-ass Stu? That's just crazy talk#rofl#.But you did clear it up for me mentioning about taking off the lower grade cover.I had forgotten about that.Of course with that book it would be a crime.

See, that says a lot about you, LOL.
I agree with CGC here on the grading. No need to encourage people to take them off. The book is whatever the final grade says it is. I'm just glad he got a 9.6 out of it - I saw the pics where he fanned them all out with his fingers. I bet some CGCer's screamed, "no gloves? No gloves!" :)
