I AM, I AM!!!! #professor# I just got accepted at Herzing Career College here in Winnipeg.....(little do they know it's to get OUT of Winnipeg) LoL. We got the letter today and I'm officially accepted now. I'm taking Web Design and Graphic Print Production (so I can keep up with all u yahoo's now LoL). They do a one year course with the last month interning at one of their many partner business's and they are known in the States too so I can take this when we move to San Diego. Now I can finally learn to build my own comic book store instead of having to pay a professional to do it. And then I can do the same for others too Woo Hoo!!!! #cloud9# #rofl# #batman#

I hope you have studied the job market for your field. Especially if you want to move south of the border. Congrats though.

Thanx everyone, yes we studied looong and hard about what I wanted to do and this is in the top ten computer jobs out there....just look at the four ads for it down below here on the Corral.... There are millions of bands, business's and hobbyist's like me that would love to have their own website or online store and I'll b the person to do that for them (soon)..plus I can work full time at it, free lance or start my own business doind it while still doing the band and pizza thing. ooooooo life is going to be busssssay. BRING IT ON!!! #batman# Ultimately bringing us more money to spend on comics. #banana1# #banana2# #banana2# #banana1# #rockon#

Well best of luck but to have any business you need to have some serious capital and a very good business plan ... whether you do it from home or as a store front. Lots of collectors would love to have a store and think it is all a matter of having the knowledge of books and some cash. It is SO MUCH more than that. I think that in many ways being a infatuated collector and a store owner is NOT a good combo.
Web Design is not an easy field to break in on either. There are plenty of jobs but of course many will likely be no better than doing what someone tells you to do.
If money is going to be tight for the year you are in College then don't expect to get out of town upon graduation ... unless you hook up with a VERY sweet job with money fronted. when I closed my store I put my money towards tuition for University instead of taking a year off before going to Red River College that debt has ballooned to $25000 as a result of carrying that debt forward and adding on to it over the last 11 years.
And so forth ... oh yeah working on your own won't give you all that much free time. I know tons of self employed people and not one of them has much free time ;)
Sorry but I have to play Devils advocate because you DO NOT want to be in my position.

Hi Oxbladder! Hank's wife here. I'm sorry to hear things didn't seem to turn out how you had expected. We appreciate you taking the time to give us your words of advice. Trust me, after all we've been through in our lives we never jump into things half heartedly. We've made some mistakes and we've had some bad things just happen to us too, so believe me when I say we've researched the hell out of everything we want for the future. We have BIG dreams and plans and we're going to do whatever it takes to achieve them. If it takes us longer than most, so be it - but it WILL happen. We're also being realistic, we're not talking about owning a mansion in Malibu or flying in a private jet to some far away land every week. All we want is to live in the amazing city of San Diego some day working in jobs that we both love.
But thanks again for your words of wisdom from your own personal experiences! We appreciate and listen to ANY advice anyone wants to give us!

Congratultaions Hank!
That's great news.
I am of the "it's never too late school" myself, having held off on going to college for a professional degree until I was 32 (took 6 years to get my Bachelors and Masters). It can be challenging, but you will certainly have an advantage over the teenyboppers and youngsters in your classes. Make sure to cultivate one on one time with your instructors. So many of the youngsters cop a "let's get outta here" approach to their classes that an instructor really appreciates it and will go the extra mile for you if you seek out their help.
I guess what I am saying is, use every moment you can while you are there to learn all that you can. It will serve you well. Work hard and more importantly, have fun!
Best of luck,
CG

Thanx everyone for your encouragement and happy thoughts...I'm really interested in seeing how I'll do in school 20 years later. I can't wait to start! My buddy just graduated from the same college I'm going to yesterday and he ALREADY has a job doing what he wants. That's a great sign. I'm really excited about our future and this is a HUGE step in that direction.
Later Dudes and Dudettes!

That's terrific news, Hank! I envy you. I would love to take some time off and go back to school. At my age (52) it wouldn't be for a career change; it would be to develop some skills I wished I'd worked on when I was younger; a last fling before settling into my dotage.
Find out what the best restaurant is in the Gaslamp District and I'll show you where it is when you come to San Diego. Hey, maybe we can even stop and look at the menu!

You should unless they are not teaching you scripting. I certainly hope they teach you scripting/coding and not how to design pages with wysiwyg software. That stuff usually creates lots of bad code and there is enough of that on the web with places like Myspace.
