Here's a cool L. B. Cole cover from 1952, the year I was born. This comic has a couple of stories by Jay Disbrow.

That's a nice looking book, it's full of color and it really gets your attention. It looks like a fine book. #114? Wow! It really has a good run up to 1952, that means the book run started around WW2, right?

I know I posted these before in the old Corral but I feel Ditko doesn't get the respect that other artists get. His style was innovative and unique and much more suitable for horror than superheroes. Here are two covers he did for Charlton's The Thing from 1954. The styles are different, but still uniquely Ditko.

Great books jae! I use to have most of that run, but had a sell off a few years back.
Here's one of my favorite runs. I really like most of the covers, especially #50 ( I think. The one with the face melting cover?). I still don't have one. I saw one awhile back on ebay, but it wasn't in very good shape and the seller wanted NM prices for it.

Actually, no. I have some, but I mainly collected by artists. Ditko and L. B. Cole, in particular. I did pick up some others, but only because they were cheap. I really wasn't into horror comics, but now I'm beginning to appreciate them more. The unfortunate thing is I sold a lot of the nicer ones (it seems everybody only wanted the better comics) years ago and I don't think I can replace them all now that I want them.
This Startling Terror Tales is from 1954. It's a bit ragged and faded, but you can still see L. B. Cole's genius at work. The lead story is by Jay Disbrow, another of my favorite artists from the period.

SP, that's a nice Horrific cover. Don Heck did a great job. I always thought of him as a hack at Marvel, but he really shines with that cover.
Here's a Adventures into the Unknown from 1952. Werewolves, ghouls, demons, ghosts; what more could you ask for?

There seems to be a revival of interest in zombies. Many Pre-code Adventures into the Unknown issues had zombie stories as seen in this one.

One of my personal favorites. Notice it's signed Kodti, instead of Ditko. The signature is located under the ray gun, on the side of the platform. Wonder why he scrambled his name?

If you haven't guessed by now, I'm a big fan of Steve Ditko, especially his Charlton work in the 50's. Here's the book that turned me onto his earlier work. It's a fanzine type publication published in 1982. It's only in black and white, but I could tell that I wanted to collect Ditko. Luckily, I was able to locate a lot of them at conventions in the 80's, often at much less than guide.

By the way, one of my grails is Space Adventures #12, featured on the book's cover. What I wouldn't give for a VG or better copy.

Wow! Cool covers, Jae. I've never seen his early works before ASM in the 60's. I got to say, --gulp--, his earlier works is better than Spidey and his later works in the 70's. Like most artist, their work shows at best when they're young and it gets worse when they get old.
