The first 100 Conan the Barbarian comics were fantastic!
I was just a wee lad when they came out.

Roy Thomas, Neal Adams, Barry (Windsor!) Smith, Bernie Wrightson, John Buscema...what a cast of creators.
Let's not forget Red Sonja, Zula, Conan as Amra and Belit...what a cast of characters.

But these old Conan comics, at least from #20 to #100 always seem to be sitting in quarter bins. I just passed up purchasing about 40 of them at my LCS since I do not think i can get anything for them on-line.
Is it just me who likes these old Conan stories?

I LOVE the old Conan series and way better than the new one even though I'm reading them too. Hell, you can't go wrong with Conan!!

I'll tell you to go and get them quarter copies and sell them to me but I don't think I can afford the postage for that many comics to the US from Canada!! I sold my copies last year and I could kick myself in the butt for doing it, but I didn't know I would be buying a house and have room for them when I sold them!! :(

Conan was one of my favorite comics during the bronze age. Roy Thomas did a great job adapting Robert E. Howard's stories. The art was superb, beginning with Barry Smith to John Buscema, and included some art from Neal Adams (#37 being one of my favorite issues). I managed to get most of the issues up to 100 without buying any new off the shelf. I would scour the used book stores and flea markets. Back then you could pick up copies for a dime. I don't think I paid more than a quarter except for a few issues. I ended up paying a little bit more for some of the earlier issues. I paid $20 for a NM #1, which was big money back in the late 70's. And I did speculate on #100, buying 10 copies. (Hey, it was #100, giant size and a death issue. Can't miss, right?)

I do like the old Marvels, but this Dark Horse version is absolutely FANTASTIC!!! It's at the top of my "read" pile every month!

Bad news Linda.

I drove over to my LCS to pick up those old Conan books for you but they already sold.
The LCS owner said the guy has more but since the LCS is only willing to give the guy 10 cents a copy he may not be back.

If he comes back, he's going to put them aside for me ....for you, that is.
I'll keep you posted.

Marvel's Conan comics defined all that was good in the early Bronze Age to me. Conan 17 and 18 I think it is are the prettiest books ever printed. They rival Steranko on Shield one and three for shear visual impact.

The key issue to me is the square-bound #10 with its fragile cover that is only glued on. Read the book like the fan-boys we all are and you have a problem. The issues through 24 and the 37 are something I perpetually pull from any 25c bins, budget allowing.

wish I had known there was such a demand for them here at the Corral.. I auctioned off about 200 of these not all that long ago.

I still have a savage tales #1 though...

I, too, loved those first 100 or so Conans.

My first one I bought new of the stand was #25.

Just my luck.....I had to go back and buy all the more expensive Barry Smith one as back issues!

My Conan #1 (long gone now) I purchased mail order in the late 70's for the price of $28 NM. Man that was high back then....but it was a sweet copy! I hardly wanted to touch it because it was so "expensive" LOL.
