Does anyone here have an Ipod from Apple? If so, I have a few questions about it. I don't know much about MP3's, they're like cars, you just don't know which is which.:? I'm looking for one for my daughter for Christmas.
The question is, do you have to download songs from Itunes only for Ipods or you can download from Windows XP or from any websites?

Many thanks for your help.

basically when you buy an Ipod you pick one for either windows or PC. It will allow you to download songs from that type of machine only.. but you can use Itunes even with a pc...

but the OS is the only limitation...

and they are all pretty good. I'm happy with mine and my wife loves hers.

iPods can handle any mp3. Whether you use a Mac or a PC you will want to use iTunes for interfacing with it this does not limit you to only using mp3's downloaded from itunes though.

I have over 7200 mp3 and AAC's (AAC is just another compression format like mp3 but, I think, a little better quality) 80 % are from CDs I own, the rest come from friends or I have downloaded from the internet (legal and illegal(well file sharing is not illegal in Canada actually)). I also have several videos and podcasts (like radio/tv shows but in mp3 format that you can listen to at any time).

I bought a walkman when they came out, cost me around $300, and have been a portable listening device lover ever since. Still, nothing prepared me for the love of my life, I LOVE MY IPOD! I call her P.A.D.I. from a dream I had. I did a lot of research on these things before I bought one and decided
on a 4GB mini IPOD, not the one to get now, and I have a DELL PC. I love it, I uploaded all of my over 800 CD's onto my computer, bought a backup drive just to make sure I would not loose my music and then sold all of my CD's on Amazon. I currently have over 130 GB of music and books in my iTunes. I use the AAC (not MP3) conversion and have not had problems. Recently I started to collect books on CD that I get from the library and listen to at work and I only liste to music about half of the time now. I am listening to "The Sea Wolf" now.

BUY THE 30GB. I just did research for someone who ended up buying this one. It seems like the best one to get right now, but an easy place to see reviews for yourself is Amazon, also, of course CNET. Don't get the 40 GB.

One last thing, I don't buy music online, I buy cd's on Amazon, get them, upload them and then sell them again, sometimes for more. But I'm patient and have a big wish list and wait for the someone to list the cd I want cheap. In this way I rarely pay more than about $2 for a cd, unless you were to count my time, which I choke up to hobby time.

I have the 30 gig Ipod, and I love it. My only real complaint is that if you watch videos on it, the battery depletes exponentially faster than just listening to music. It's great for having a bigass stash of superhero cartoons to watch anytime, but you'd be lucky to get thru 4-5 of them on a full battery.

I also have a Dell PC and a large external harddrive. I also loaded up all my cd's and then went and traded the majority of them in to a local shop in exchange for more stuff. I was able to get some great box sets. I'll be trading in more soon, I'm sure.

Brave man trusting the life of your HD over the "hard copy" cds. I have accidentally erased some of my Library before and it took several days to rerip a bunch of them. My goal is to get hard copies of of the 55 or so albums I have downloaded from other sources (friend, online, Apple Store, etc). Added to that there are several CDs I just would never get rid off because they were either very hard to find or are worth a boatload more cash than a second hand store could ever offer (I have one EP that is probably worth about $220 CDN and I would not settle for less)

I actually have my music library copied onto three different HDS.

I have my music files backed up on an external hard drive and then for when the extreme emergency comes, burned them all DVDs. With each DVD holding over 4 gb of space, you can put quite a few songs on each one.

That's my other backup plan. I just recently purchased a dvd burner, so I'll be archiving all of it very soon. :D

Yeah, a hard copy is nice, but I rely on my hardrives completely right now. Besides, I have 15 feet or so of albums, vinyl, and that never depletes. CD's are worthless pieces of plastic, get rid of them while you can.
