Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if the Overstreet guide mentions anything regarding the grading parameters for 100 page giants, or if they differ from any other book. Because they were bound differently, they tend to have defects such as spine splits and indentions on the cover from staples that you don't find in other books. Any thoughts?

The only "defects" that are usually forgiven except in the highest grade are rippling caused by the glued binding and slight staple peneration of the front cover. Mind you I haven't checked recently to see if this has changed at all. I cannot see it changing becausae it is not exactly a binding process that results in more defect free spines than not.
I personally still treat both defect fairly lightly EXCEPT I personally do not allow for staple perforation. I do allow for the staple ripples (this is when the pressure of the binding process has wrpped the cover paper tightly over the staples so you can easily see them (if I have an example of this I will post it later).
As for splits .... I have personally never seen any 100 pagers that were apparently split in the binding process. Usually this is caused by poor handling. I have seen many with abraded corners though and I will downgrade on a sliding scale dependent on how bad the abrasions are.
The only other defect I will grade on a sliding scale and is somewhat allowable is teired/rolled binding. This is when pressure in the binding process might have given an angled edge instead of a vertical edge. Again this I would grade on a sliding scale depending just how bad it is.

Great input! Thanks Oxbladder. You really seem to know your stuff. I recently bought a PGX graded copy of a 100 page giant to see what they think a 9.2 copy looks like. I haven't received it yet, but I'm interested to see if they allow for the "defects" you mentioned.
