I've been working hard on this series for the last year or so, and I'm finding a lot more competition lately in the auctions. I got this one tonight, and was surprised there was only one other bidder, Ed Kalb. It may be because this was so early (1937) before most of the good strips started.
Popular ran for 12 years and included the usual assortment of comic strip characters from the papers: Little Orphan Annie, Smokey Stover, Tarzan, Mutt and Jeff, and on and on. But in about the middle of the run, they started some really interesting adventure strips. Martan the Marvel Man, the Hurricane Kids, the Voice, Professor Supermind and Son (which I think was ripped off years later by Dell as Brain Boy) and others.
In the last few years 1946-1948, it was mostly just Terry and the Pirates and Felix the Cat. In my opinion though the Felixes were better than the Tobys printed in the '50's. I can get most of them in VG for $15-30. If anybody has a pile of them sitting around you want to get rid of, let me know.
