I've been working hard on this series for the last year or so, and I'm finding a lot more competition lately in the auctions. I got this one tonight, and was surprised there was only one other bidder, Ed Kalb. It may be because this was so early (1937) before most of the good strips started.

Popular ran for 12 years and included the usual assortment of comic strip characters from the papers: Little Orphan Annie, Smokey Stover, Tarzan, Mutt and Jeff, and on and on. But in about the middle of the run, they started some really interesting adventure strips. Martan the Marvel Man, the Hurricane Kids, the Voice, Professor Supermind and Son (which I think was ripped off years later by Dell as Brain Boy) and others.

In the last few years 1946-1948, it was mostly just Terry and the Pirates and Felix the Cat. In my opinion though the Felixes were better than the Tobys printed in the '50's. I can get most of them in VG for $15-30. If anybody has a pile of them sitting around you want to get rid of, let me know.

Nice book for a apparently a nice price. For golden age I am only interested in the odd Jungle Comics and I am still trying to complete my first series Wonder Woman. There is always interest in WW but it fluctuates alot and is a bit slow at this time of year.

One thing about this auction, it's my first from a "third party" seller, other than Heritage. I'll just have to see if there are any hitches.

Popular 20 showed up today, no surprises, solid VG. You could tell the shipper was no comics dealer though, shipped with no backing boards, packed with newspaper in a large box. This is now my oldest comic (1937).

This one's from the best period of Popular, IMHO. But Martan is a bit strange, and suffers from Superman Syndrome. He is so much stronger than his opponents that it's hard to build suspense. Didn't seem to bother the writer, he just mows down the bad guys episode after episode.
