View Full Version : The February MADNESS Round of The Change One Letter Game!
The Charlton Guy

You've all heard of FEBRUARY MADNESS! Right?
Good, then I need explain no further and we can get right on with this Round.
Rules as usual, ask if you don't know, watch those Proper Nouns and Cancer-Web entries, and try to nab those obscure avian variant wurds!
For the FEBRUARY MADNESS ROUND you are playing for a very special comic direct from the Charlton Guy Archives. This mystery book will possibly be revealed as you play.
This FEBRUARY MADNESS ROUND of the COLG begins following the first word in my next post.
Good luck!

hoghs
I suppose you could argue that this is the plural of:
Hogh \Hogh\ (h[=o]), n. [Icel. haugr hill, mound; akin to E. high. See High (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/high).] A hill; a cliff. [Obs.] --Spenser.
But you would lose the arguement, as this word appears to be a Proper Noun.

2.yarn or fabric made of this fiber.
rowand
02-24-2007, 07:19 PM
This is a win by me.
I won't even try CG's patience with a try at placing the prefix a- (meaning not) in front of ynel the old Chaucerian term for middle and generating the word aynel meaning not in the middle of Chaucer! Denel is a South Africian state-owned company so that should be a proper noun.
Just to nitpick being the nitwit that I am:
From Dictionary.com
Dy·nel Trademark. 1.a brand of modacrylic fiber used in textiles, characterized chiefly by its strength, rapid drying rate, and noncombustibility. 2.yarn or fabric made of this fiber.
Dy·nel
A trademark used for a copolymer of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile employed in making fire-resistant, insect-resistant, easily dyed textile fiber.
Both entries into the Dictionary.com list it as a Trademarked proper name which should make it an illegal entry and at best in need of a ruling by CG! I guess the term xerox for photocopy verses the trademarked company name Xerox for the guys who developed the process is a parallel case.
fulltimer56
02-25-2007, 12:06 AM
But rowand,
the 2nd meaning for dynel is: 2.yarn or fabric made of this fiber.
Which would not make it a proper name, would it?

Hmmmm...
This took some research, which I will share below, but after some preliminary web-browsing, the bottom line is that I have found that a "Trademark" can only be used grammatically as an adjective, not as a noun, let alone a proper noun.
An interesting concept.
Here's a few of the examples cited:
http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/000943.html
Quote (from above site): NEVER use a trademark as a noun. Always use a trademark as an adjective modifying a noun.
Next, from the horses mouth, the 3M Company:
http://www.3com.com/corpinfo/en_US/legal/trademark/prop_usage_tmb.html#1
And lastly (and similarly), from TheTrademarkFirm.com:
http://www.trademark-search-attorney.com/Proper_Trademark_Use.html
Quote (from above site): The most important rule of grammar regarding proper trademark use is that a trademark should be used as an adjective, not a noun or verb. Using the mark as an adjective helps distinguish the mark from the generic term it modifies.
Well...you learn something new every day...
BUT!
What an enormous, slimy, dirt-eating can of worms we would open ourselves to if we open the door to the use of Trademark names in the sacrosanct realm of The Change One Letter Game! Can you imagine? Walmart, Oreo, Zantex, Viagra, Cheesewhiz becoming acceptible wurds?
Sorry Marvelguy, but it ain't gonna happen. We gotta stick ta proper usages around these here parts!.
From this moment on (and I think we covered this in one of the very early Rounds at The O'l Corral), Trademark names are disallowed.
As such, Dynel (notice the caps and check out the definition again) is also disallowed.
